The MX-30 is designed for drivers who have a variety of charging options. Overnight: plug in at home or add a wallbox. My service provider has 22Kwh stations all over our area (nearest is ~300m away and costs 2 cent per Kwh more than my home rate). There are three 50Kwh DC stations that are free to use while shopping within 10 minutes of my work. This car is great value for money and the strengths are design, quality, and reliability.

These cars are not made for long trips, we never mention the AC chargers, there are thousands more available and often free to use. There only the Zoe takes 22kW ! The others take 11, 7 or 6... I have a Zoe ZE50 and did not take the DC charger option for those reasons. I've done 4000kms with it so far and charged only twice at home and that just for a few hours just to have a bit of SOC.

I think the weakness of some cars such as the Mazda is not so much the slow fast charging, but not being able to handle three-phase 11 KW chargers that you would find on the public streets. In the NL these 11 kw chargers are all over the place, but the Mazda, MG and some others can only handle 1 phase, so you end up with just 3.7 Kw. Then your visit to your friend must not just include coffee and tea, but also dinner, beer and perhaps a sleepover...

Indeed more range is just going to make the car more expensive. Do you really need it? Also note that Bjorn is testing in winter conditions. At least my experience with the MX is that 200 km is reachable. Just be careful with your right foot and keep your coat on. And if you really must make a longer trip just take lunch at a fast charging location.

MX-30 took 56 minutes to charge 100 km of motorway driving range (27 kWh)! To put this into prospective if you are in Tønsberg and want to come back home to Oslo it will almost take you more time to charge the necessary energy than to actually drive it back home! That's laughable from any convinced ICE drivers as well as the Fiat "California" 500 EV of the Honda E.

If you want a nicely equipped city car, I don’t see why you would go for the Mazda over a second-hand i3. You can get plenty of them for cheap, still in warranty, good drivetrain, smaller footprint which is great for the city, and very similar passenger space. Can see how the Mazda is going to make sense as a REX as the battery range will be pretty decent, but especially with the slow charging, doesn’t work as a pure EV (IMO).

Chameleon Renault Zoe has a very different, patented charging solution. Instead of having a separate charger in the car, the power from the power plug is fed right into the electric motor windings and uses the car's regular inverter to align the power and charge the batteries. When motor brakes with an electric car, the electric motor functions as a generator and the inverter converts the generated alternating current back into direct current that charges the batteries. When the Renault Zoe is charged, it is as if the car would constantly brake, as if it were going down an eternal downhill. The electric motor is of course locked with a heavy bolt during charging - otherwise the alternating current that is fed into it would cause the car to roll away. The advantage of this technology is that no separate charger is needed in the car and it saves costs. Especially since it is an extra expensive three-phase charger that is replaced. The downside, however, is that a separate charger can be more efficient.

Then again, at 53 minutes, e-208 easily won, but Zoe had charged more kWh than MG ZS EV. So at that point Zoe was faster than ZS EV. Looking at only % is not very useful. As always, these comparisons are interesting, but I think Bjørn might focus on SOC instead of how much is charged to the car in kWh. After 20 minutes, the e-208 has charged 24 kWh, ZS-EV: 20 kWh, ZOE: 15 kWh and MX-30: 12 kWh, ie only half of the Peugeot. After half an hour of charging, the picture is the same. e-208 has been charged the most (32 kWh); then follows the ZS-EV (26 kWh), ZOE (22 kWh) and MX-30 (18 kWh). Of course, this does not take into account the consumption of cars, but I do not think ZOE is a loser in this comparison.

I wasn't bashing it. But everyone knows that charging at 45 kW in 2020 is not very fast. Take a look at 1000 km challenge. e-208 did it in only 12h30m whereas Zoe did it in 14h35min. Even if Zoe had better weather, it would still need about 14 hours. That's 1.5 hours slower than e-208!

I'd say, it depends. If there are a lot of 100kW+ DC charging stations out there, you will get further with an e-208 in the same amount of time (by never charging past 50-60-70%). That's also obvious from the above curves. Since we can expect more of those DC chargers in the next few years in the EU - that will make more of a difference in the future. However, if there are fewer charging stations out there, in my opinion the Zoe has an edge not talked about quite enough: 22kW AC charging. Pretty useful on day to day basis, maybe not for those longer trips - but for shorter city trips and in case you're the only one charging there - since those AC chargers are so much more common (e.g. here, in Belgium).
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
In most charging videos, I keep pointing out that charging to 90 % is too slow and expensive (in many countries). The best deal to to charge to about 70-80 % and charge more often. At 1:29, e-208 has added 18 kWh wheras Zoe has added only 10 kWh. That's a huge difference. At 2:30, e-209 has added 27 kWh wheras Zoe has added only 17.5 kWh. e-208 has 66 % and is good to go. Fast charging most cars past 80 % is very slow and should be avoided. So comparing charging times to 90 % is almost irrelevant.

@davidbarr5783 3 жыл бұрын
I'll need to watch your ZE50 1000 km again... I think you were not driving in style that was advantageous to ZOE. The Zoe is more suited to longer trips between charges, albeit they are slower. I regularly drive from Lancaster Park & Ride home to Barrhead (after charging to 90%) in one go...that's 270 km (168 miles) and arrive with a 15% left.
