You know, knowing how loyal Turrican fans are always developing new games of him and keeping Bren Mcguire's legend alive, maybe someday, a fan may actually do a proper port of Turrican 1 to the Genesis that is actually well made and nearly replicates the gameplay and music of the Amiga version. Oh well, guess one can dream.

These arrangements of Hulsbeck's work leaves MUCH to be desired, but the port itself plays alright I'd say. I'm actually tempted to play it over the Amiga version by one factor: A cheat code I'd read about in the options menu. Hold down while you've got Exit highlighted, then press A,B,B,A,B,A,A,B,A,A, Start?; I may be wrong here but GameFAQs has the correct one) This gives you a little cheat menu where, among other things, you can allow yourself to use Wheel mode as many times as you want, like in Turrican 2. That alone makes things feel SO much more fun to me, getting to zip around everywhere..

This version has better resolution and graphics than the Amiga version. But while the sound FX are good, the music on the other hand could have been much better given what the Mega Drive is trully capable of (cf. Mega Turrican for instance). One thing that can be annoying here is that the life bar depletes at a faster rate than in other versions making it significantly harder. Overall, the Mega Drive version (which was unlicensed, BTW) could have easily been the best but it needed some tweaks here and there.

While the music isn't as good as some other versions, this one's soundtrack gets credit for its faster-paced remix of "Outpost" (Stage 1-3 music). If they made full use of the sound chip it could have sounded godlike!
@WeskerSega3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you know, but this isn't really a faster paced remix of Outpust. Rather, it's an issue in this longplay, as all musics are faster-paced because the game is being played at 60hz and the Mega Drive version doesn't like to be played that way, overspeeding all the musics. It gets corrected playing it at 50hz, so North Americans definitely got shafted with this release (it's an European development after all). Normally this situation was the opposite, with Europeans getting a lot of games slowing down the music on 50hz, the opposite situation was a much less frequent one and mirrors to what happened to the Mega Drive version of Shadow of the Beast. That one at least had a properly timed Japanese release, this one never had anything like that. Recently, Desko of the Turrican MDRR project (which probably will bring the best versions of Turrican and Turrican II the Mega Drive can give) has performed a sound fix to have the correct music speed while playing the Mega Drive version at 60hz.

I always like the look of Turrican on the Amiga when I saw it in games magazines. I remember renting it for the Megadrive, and I was a bit hesitant because it had Accolade on the box... and I really didn't want to be stuck with a cartridge of garbage for a week until next rental 😅. It was absolute garbage. The control was janky, the hit detection was all over the place, the damage was completely insane, and it felt so cheap and amateurish compared to the NES games like Metroid and Contra. I still to this day haven't played the Amiga version, but I can only assume it's better than this mess.

Graphics design was outdated when released on the Genesis, would have been a hit if released on the SMS instead.
@WeskerSega3 жыл бұрын
How come the graphics design of a 1990 Amiga game can be outdated for a 1991 Mega Drive release? The Master System wouldn't be able to keep with this by any chance, on that platform it would obviously feel much closer to the Commodore 64 version. This is obviously not the best conversion of an Amiga game but overexaggerated statements are also completely missing the point pretty much.
@KurtPedersen-tg7jc2 ай бұрын
@@WeskerSega The C64 version *is* the original. According to Manfred Trenz, the game series (Turrican I & II) were developed and designed on that computer. As usual, Amiga lovers tends to believe the game was created on that console, but it wasn't
@WeskerSega2 ай бұрын
@@KurtPedersen-tg7jc I know the Commodore 64 version is the original design, as Manfred Trenz always targeted the Commodore 64, but obviously, for 16 bit conversions like the Mega Drive, you can't have the Commodore 64 as basis (which wasn't used as basis for any other conversion, by the way, as the other 8 bit versions are completely different) and you need to use what's considered the basis for 16 bit platforms, which is the Amiga version. This is why I asked how could he consider the Amiga version outdated for that time, and better suited on the Master System than on the Mega Drive. The Master System could have coped well with something closer to the Commodore 64 version, but not with this one.
