Olongapo City sure has changed a lot since I was last there in November of 1986 on my final Westpac aboard the USS Tarawa LHA-1. My very first time I was in Olongapo City was on Tuesday, November 26, 1974 when I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19. I met my late wife of 31 Years of marriage on January 16, 1975 during my third time In Olongapo City on my very first Westpac. I got stationed at SRF Subic Bay, I was stationed there from November 20, 1978 to March 30, 1981. SRF Subic Bay was the very best Duty stationed I served at in the Navy. My late wife & I got married April 5, 1979, we had 3 children during our 31 years of marriage. My late wife passed away March 6, 2010. I am Planning to return back to the Philippines within the next 4 years & will live out my life there as my heart is in the Philippines.

still not enough to compare it when the U.S. Naval base was here. Olongapo is still nothing compared to the past. We have big malls sure, but what can you say about the salary? we are all dying here to survive and earn. And if the Americans were still here, there would be malls too. A long time ago, there were no ayala and SM. Olongapo is not a great city ngaun. If you were born in the 90s , I would bet that you have no idea. that's why. And if you were born in the 80s at ganian pa rin sasabihin mo, ano, inggit lang sa kano and where did your brain go?

I love this city, the people and the Phillipines as a whole. The people here have manage to find a way to bounced back from one event after another. The resiliency of the people here have always moved me since day one. I plan to return to Olongapo in January. Salamat for the memories. Muahhhh.

I deployed on the USS Tarawa LHA-1 in 1986 as a corpsman with the USMC & it was my first visit to Olongapo but unfortunately I lost all of my pictures so finding videos from that time of my life makes me real happy! Now I can show family and friends what the area looked like instead of just trying to tell them about it, like a lot of others my sea story's tend to blur as time passes so videos like this really helps me remember specifics! Also if my memory is correct the Marines I was attached to went to the field to patrol the area outside of the base when the Marcos government fell and Marshal Law was enacted, I remember being restricted to the base for our Liberty but thankfully it didn't last too long! I'd love to find a video that was taken during that deployment but I've had no luck yet, I was on the Fort Fisher LSD-40 in 1990 for my second westpac and I don't have pictures or videos of that time either so I periodically search for both deployments but no luck yet so if anyone has suggestions for where to look me would be greatly appreciated!

Memory lane, was on the USS Okinawa (LPH-3) from 83-86. Olongapo was a port I always looked forword to. I liked a little place off the "beatin path" called the Bamboo Grove, there was a little gal working there that looked just like Pat Benatar, after 43 days at sea and a few San Miguel's, I was in love!!!!! Would love to visit OC one more time before I die,m maybe, just maybe...............

I was there 72-73 aboard the USS Ponchatoula. It was funny all the girls knew when we would be back in port before we knew. Loved that place.

Magsaysay Drive was a river. US Naval Base turned it into a Neon of lights for the city and R&R for the visiting sailors, of course it is a plus to the city of Olongapo. It was 1957 or 1958 when they started the paving. I was in high school (JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL) lived nearby at Findler St.

I saw vias. That was the best. Tacos with banana Ketchup. If I remember right via was married to Richard Gordon which is the name of the street and he is a long time senator now and running for president now. And he was chairman of SBMA before too. I've lived in Southern Philippines for a long time now but I still have a home in olongapo. It's just weird how much that place has changed. I plan to go back for another visit this year.
