Mer Rouge Train Derailment 5 Years Later

I have been requested several times to make a documentary about this wreck, so here it is. Also sorry if I mispronounce Mer Rouge and sorry it’s a day late I made a mistake and had to re-edit, but here it is.
On October 5, 2014 an eastbound Union Pacific manifest collided into a truck carrying a large crane. The collision then turned into a derailment, with the lead engines and 17 cars fell off the track. Homes were evacuated due to a chemical leak, but it wasn't a huge risk after it was safe 2 hours later. The engineer and conductor survived and were taken to the hospital. The truck driver lived too when he ran from his truck, but his truck company was blamed for the crash and paid for all damaged and cleanup.
There can be some lessons from this:
1. No matter the vehicle, the train will always win
2. If you're stuck on the tracks, report it immediately

I mean..the train (or the front engine at least) probably damaged itself more then the truck when it hit the ground, either way the truck is literaly in pieces and the engines is largerly in tact, albiet a bit bashed up.

Unfortunately thats not true. The engineer and conductor survived, however were seriously injured and weren't able to return to work. I believe one of them is disabled now because of it.

My friend remembers this well. He and his dad was in a pickup truck behind the woman who recorded. They were ok as the derailment occurred they skipped town to their home in Baton Rouge.

The front of the locomotive was badly damaged because it hit about 150 odd tons at 50 mph but if it didn't derail it wouldn't of been to bad it was all the cars hitting hit afterwards and to not the crew got out even after all that trains are very tough

Point of clarification: that was an 80-wheeler (EIGHTY-WHEELED) truck as you can see the load of the trailer being unable to clear the grade of the crossing at the tracks. He was stuck metal on metal and it would have taken cranes or a train to remove it; and so it was. The police should have called the railroad to advise of the situation so the train could have stopped until the heavy equipment could have moved on.

It’s honestly sad to see an old Dash-9 go. Especially ones with good sounding horns like the narrow font K5LAR24 on 9939 for example.

We will typically jump under the desk and on the floor, they dont teach us that but most everyone will to avoid glass or debris coming thru the windshield.

Those cabs are designed the way they are to increase survivability. Would not put as great odds if that were an SD style cab.

Let's be honest. Most of the train damage is because of the derail and flip over, but the fact that the crew members survived is something unbelievable. Thats what he mean that trains will always win

OMG, this is so heartbreaking, its really sad that the NS 9939 has been scrapped😢😭 and the Southern Pacific engine has been repainted to Union Pacific which was unexpected but good thing that someone got unhurt by the train derailment

If you slow the video down to .25 speed, you will notice at the point of impact, dust flies out of the radiators of the loco.

I'm wondering - what was the time elapsed from when the semi initially got stuck on the crossing to when the train actually came? I read somewhere that the driver was deemed at fault because he failed to notify the railroad or law enforcement. But I'm curious how much time he really had.

Something is off about this video. Two separate incidents merged together like it’s one train wreck. Even a semi with a large load is not going to do that type of damage. Even a mere car has caused train derailment. But this footage looks like an impact from another train. Also the intersection does not look as it should from the other side. So, if the train derailed why does it happen obviously much later after breaking? Ok, so I looked it up, and tried to verify the engine number of 9939 visual and statistically. It all matches. Good job for this KZfaqr. I got tired of all the fake videos.., I will subscribe. For anime fans check out The Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and Alois Nebel…, if I spelled it right. It’s Czech, a really cool black and white animation based on a rail station.

I didn't know that train train derailed. Clearly, I see videos of trains vs trucks and there was that clip and I didn't know it fell off the tracks and didn't know the tanker cars are filled with chemicals.

It is NOT the truck's fault, it's ROAD ENGINEERING... X-crossings have these ''hills'' on the roads, that bottom-out long, low bed trailers. It's jacked-up, so the tractor's traction wheels have no traction anymore. Very simple problem, that leeds to multiple accidentssssss...

Ohh shit, that was a bad one!! I'd always found it all too easy to think that the engineer would be relatively safe in an incident like this, being high up and cocooned in such a big, heavy chuck of steel...I learned a lesson here though, that's for sure!

It was a QLINLX train and was built in Livonia, Louisiana yard, not Houston. The "X" is an extra train. It sat in the Grayson siding for several days. It was to be yarded in North Little Rock, Arkansas and taken apart at the hump yard. It was a RSSM train between cars 80 and 89, I don't remember which one, had anhydrous ammonia.

You need to put more detail into these. If you look into it, the engineer nor conductor could return to work. One is disabled if i remember correctly.

There are several factors that weren't taken into affect. I'm guessing that the driver didn't think to call the crossing hot line and get an ETA on the next train. I've called it before when I had to walk a 324 cat across the crossing.

Whenever trains hit trucks only Amtrak and Norfolk Southern trains derail. Other freight locos like csx Union Pacific and Canadian pacific have no problem with destroying trucks and still staying on the tracks
