Will we ever be graced with a video game franchise as deep, thought provoking, and down right astonishing as the metal gear series? Words really cant describe groundbreaking nature of this entire series. And all though the franchise has finally come to rest, i am mutha fukin ecstatic for Death Stranding. Hideo Kojima has proven time and time again, that with him behind the wheel, he creates awe inspiring masterpieces.

I like how Kojima creates alternate universes depending on whether or not his name is in the credits.

I was ABSOLUTELY hooked on MGS5 from Ground Zero. So I simply couldn't wait for Phantom Pain. It was definitely a rollercoaster.... But it was a BADASS rollercoaster. I had more fun sneaking around Afghan villages then I did running from a 60ft. robot. But like I said, a rollercoaster.

In my opinion, the only cannon things about portable ops are: Ocelot obtaining the other half of the philosophers legacy, the foundation of Foxhound and the last conversation where Ocelot asks Zero to include Big Boss in the patriots.

Portable Ops is canon. I don't care what Kojima says because it has DIRECT LINKS TO MGS 4. It mentions how the US gets the remaining legacy, the elimination of the Philophers, the formation of not only Foxhound and The Patriots (aka Cipher), the side mission has Eva mentioning she was rescued by Snake in Hanoi. Kojima can say it's not canon all he wants, there are too many details that have direct ties in MGS4 and it is mentioned by name in Portable Ops by Miller right at the beginning of the game. Portable Ops IS CANON, it was always canon and remains canon.

i mean, portable ops is fine and all, personally i prefer it non-canon because its story wasn't THAT important and i like having Metal Gear ZEKE being the first real metal gear ever constructed. but i did like some things in it. honestly the real loss from Mr. Kojima's statement about the core metal gear saga is metal gear rising being non-canon. yeah the game is silly and ridiculous, but i loved that game. and its a spin off after the main story is over so its doesn't effect much at all, so i'll keep it in my personal headcanon.

I've always thought there was room for slight variation in the translation of what Kojima said regarding Portable Ops. I take it to mean that any info introduced in Portable Ops that contradicts with any of the official games in the saga, the saga wins out. Otherwise, it's canon. Wish you'd have covered it.

I'll still say portable was canon enough. And ultimately even a creator doesn't have the final say on what's cannon in my opinion. If the author of Harry Potter wrote a new series with the same character on the same time frame, but with different events she can't just say the original HP series isn't cannon anymore, right. She could only say it's a new cannon. Perhaps I'm wrong, but when someone says it isn't cannon anymore it sounds to be that it doesn't matter or is overwritten. Similar to the Dragon Ball Super deal with GT. And since kojima didn't outright say it wasn't cannon initially, just a few details different, he can't just change his mind later.

For me there are two canon time lines: The Kojima Canon and the Konami Canon. In the Kojima Canon there are MG 1 (MSX) and 2; MGS 1 - 5 and Peace Walker (main story). In the Konami Canon there are MG 1 (MSX) and 2; MGS 1 - 5; Peace Walker (main story); Portable Ops (main story); Rising: Revengeance (+DLCs) and Survive (I guess?).

I disagree, Kojima clearly acknowledged that the main story of Portable Ops is part of the timeline/ Saga and only “small details” aren’t. Therefore the plot of Portable Opps is canon but small details were written by somebody else to develop the game. However Kojima doesn’t want to accept the game as part of the saga because within him “Hideo Kojima Games” are only those that he directs, writes (“details”), and designs as a producer. Portable Ops is acknowledged in MGS4, MGSPW, and in MGSGZ but not given much importance because of Kojimas perception. After all we are talking about the story of Metal Gear, not about Hideo Kojima Games. The events of Portable Ops are very important. It clarifies what happened to the Philosophers Legacy after the events of MGS3. It explains the ideology of Outer Heaven and how it got started for Big Boss. It sets a foundation to the beginning events MGSPW and how Big Boss has a team of mercenary soldiers in Colombia. It also introduced Roy Campbell and his relation with Big Boss further acknowledged in future Metal Gear games.

Am I missing something? I watched the previous videos, and I never heard any mention of Solid Snake, or Liquid Snake till this video, which they just throw in that they're growing up to be clones of Big Boss. What? Like where'd they come from, etc? There's a few things that this series is just throwing in without any explanation whatsoever...

I personally think that portable ops *is* apart of the saga. Well some bits. Like Big Boss being in the ooga booga peninsula or whatever it's called. Him bringing soviet and FOX soldiers into his sort of rebellion to stop Gene but the whole bit with the REX.... well no. That's definitely wrong. And a lot of others. But Big Boss meeting with Roy Campbell, Jonathan and others I think is canon.

Portable Ops is canon. It's canon because the game helped set in motion events that would shape the rest of the series. Portable Ops is the reason why Fox was disbanded, how Big Boss formed Foxhound and how the Patriots were formed. That and it's revealed that Big Boss was in fact one of the founding members of the Patriots.

The story fits and makes sense plus the story was honestly my favorite story beside mgs 3. ain't that something. a story that kojima didn't write is my 2nd favorite story. It just proves konami can make a good metal gear game without kojima but yet they decide to make a zombie game.
