Finally, a video that takes a critical close up to the MGS 5 story, ending and some of its themes. We will examine the story and evaluate it with other more well received Metal Gears, to make the point that this instalment is as just as good as some of the others and that the send off and missing link was there to a good extent.
The video explains and critiques mgs5, highlighting how it was about the significance of language and the futility of revenge!
Although Konami and Hideo was given a bad wrap about it but this video makes the case that the final MGS we will ever get was as remarkable as the other ones in its own way!
Hope you enjoy! See Sources I used for influences and a deeper understanding of what was discussed and touched upon.

After watching the whole thing, I gotta say that this is by far the deepest analysis I have ever seen of the story of MGSV. It's certainly refreshing from all other complaints about "Cutscene ratio" or the game "Feeling different from past MGS games". Though, I'd add a few things to your great analysis; The first thing is regarding the whole thing with Chapter 2 repeated mission; You did touch upon the futility of revenge and how Kaz was pretty much chasing phantoms because he's not satisfied...so my interpretation of Chapter 2 is that...after getting your revenge on Skull Face...you pretty much lost the one thing driving you to play the game...so you are just left there...chasing phantoms and just trying to "get stronger" as Kaz puts it...but you feel something is missing...there is no thrill or drive to keep going anymore...I think this is a meta way that Kojima wanted the players to experience the futility of revenge...but sadly most people believe that a "Good story" has to be always "Satisfactory"...when reality storytelling is a form of art that doesn't need to make you feel "Satisfied" as long as there is a payoff to it. All of these events in MGSV, both chapters 1 and 2 have shaped Venom Snake's character...all the pain from losing Quiet, killing his comrades and even the pain of losing Skull Face who was his main drive for vengeance...and losing Paz and his guilt over not being able to save her manifsting into hallucinations...combine that with him realizing that he's not who he thought he was...take all that into consideration when going to Metal Gear 1 on MSX...MGSV has certainly gave that game and the whole series alot more context. MGSV is an underappreciated masterpiece that is misjudged just because it didn't tell it story in a "conventional" way the "Average man" would grasp...and here is why I think that it's a fallacy...If all stories in all mediums just cater to the understanding of the "Average man" storytelling methods would never develop at all...and if the average man gets less and less intelligent...so would stories become if writers were afraid the average man "can't understand them". Kojima's storytelling has always been challenging for both the thought and the norms in storytelling that people have gotten used to...but it's a shame that even with that alot people still think MGS in general is just about "kewl boss fights", "Giant robots", "Kewl Codec moments" and "MOAR cutscenes"...and when a game doesn't offer something similar to past games they just say "It's lacking in story".

Miyakolover I loved your comment and the video taught me a deeper understanding of the game. I think you are unfair to those who did not like the game. It's not just kewl boss fights and codec calls and cut scenes. It is the fact that ocelot is not ocelot at all. Quiet had no justification for dressing the way she did (speaking of all the controversy) which kojima said there would be. There was not a climax in any way. Kiefer Sutherland did not have to replace David Hayter. And probably most of all Solid snake was not even in the game nor mentioned although Les Enfante Terible was...?

I agree 100% this game has many hidden virtues and stands alongside MGS2 and Death Stranding in terms of brilliance. Like both of those games it has also been misunderstood, under appreciated and derided for not being what the players wanted/expected. But art SHOULDNT be what you want necessarily, it should be a personal expression of its author which exposes new ideas and perspectives which help us to understand the human condition/experience in new, complex and intriguing ways. V does this exceptionally well, and though 2 is my fav in terms of writing, mgs v as a whole (including both Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes as a kind of tryptic) does this exceptionally well. Plus MGS V: TPP use of mechanics and player affect to make its points is some of the best I’ve ever experienced. God I love this game so much.
@Glassandcandy
@Glassandcandy 4 жыл бұрын
Nich Huff I agree that the reaction many people had is justified the same way that any experience you have with any art is valid, but I wanted to address some points you bring up if that’s okay :) : 1. The game has no climax This is untrue. The climax is halfway through the game when you confront and stop skull face. Everything until that point builds to it. People don’t think it’s a climax because it’s not towards the end of the game, but kojima explains himself in the ultimate guide that this is intentional. I don’t have the full quote on hand, but basically he said what the OP said, that after beating the main antagonist you’re left aimless, feeling like something is missing. It’s supposed to produce the affect of a phantom pain that the player can experience and to emphasize throughout chapter 2 the monotony and senseless brutality of the war economy you built from PW to TPP, in that you’re doing horrible things (killing, destabilizing regions/countries, kidnapping and enslaving soldiers, resource mining, selling blood diamonds, etc) not for a relatable goal of revenge but for a cold justification of getting stronger, bigger and richer (DD is a business which makes its profit through killing and war and all of the suffering that comes as a consequence of that. BB may “save” war orphans and child soldiers, but would they be child soldiers in the first place if PMCs and western governments didn’t destabilize their states? By choosing to keep playing through this chapter, even though there’s no real story or incentive for you to do so, the player becomes as culpable as BB in this continued process. After all, you can put down the controller if you want, but you choose not to, and you can’t say that it’s to take revenge/beat the boss anymore. Instead it’s to have fun playing soldier or to build MB/DD. How different is the player from BB himself at that point? None of this would work without the climax being placed where it is. It’s a brilliant decision imo. 2. There’s no reason for quiet to dress the way she does This is technically incorrect but I see where you are coming from and I agree with the sentiment. The game gives a narrative explanation for her dress, however, it’s clear that HK is just a perv, and he has a horrible track record or sexualizing his female characters (though he has written some of the best supporting female characters in gaming at the same time, so women in MGS is definitely a complicated topic that needs nuanced analysis!) 3. Ocelot isn’t ocelot Actually this is the only game where he IS ocelot! Ocelot is always a weird eccentric goof in the other games, but he’s also always playing a part and deceiving people in them. This is the only game where he doesn’t do that and it isn’t in his interest to put on a whacky character who acts crazy to fool his enemies. So instead of that ocelot just acts like his normal self, which is quite odd at first but eventually grows charming. It’s also nice to see that he still has a huge crush on big boss lol. 4. Solid snake isn’t mentioned He’s mentioned in one of the Truth tapes where ocelot tells BB that there were two successful products of LET, Eli who escaped his captors in Africa, and David (solid snake) who was sent to America. This is the only mention of him in the game, and that’s okay with me because he’s not relevant to MGS’s story yet. 5. No reason to replace hayter with Keifer Okay this is a controversial one, and I respect that position completely, but I personally think Keifer does a great job especially in the motion capture. I don’t think Hayter can give the same range of visual expression as him, though I still love hayter very much. Phew that was a lot to type out on a phone! Thanks if you read it all the way through (or at all)! I need to give my thumb a break now lol

A great video except one minor detail where you mention that Venom Snake is an unremarkable, random guy. He was one of Big Boss's best fighter and loyal lieutenant so much so that his skills were almost equal to Big Boss himself. Or maybe I just misunderstood and you actually meant the gamer was unremarkable, random person. I totally agree though with the rest of the story. MGSV is a masterpiece that is so significantly far ahead in terms of it story and themes that it makes many other stories look like kindergarten stories. Additionally this idea that a significant part of the story is incomplete because of the cut content is a great exaggeration in my opinion. I presume many people say that because of the anti-climactic ending (especially related to Skull Face) coupled with their own hyped up expectations that clouded their critical analytical skills. Once you take a step back and genuinely look at the story it is exceptionally deep. Thanks for the video !

Really love you take. I think you’re definitely on to something with language and subjugation. People analyzing the game focus too much on vengeance but not enough on the actual them, the power of language to dominate. I would’ve liked if you would’ve brought post colonial theory into your analytical framework though. Spivak’s “Can the Subaltern Speak?” Fits this game like a glove (or perhaps like a shiny red metal arm :p ). I’m also kinda glad you didn’t though because I’m working on a video essay on this game using post colonial theory as a framework and I want to pretend like my ideas are unique lol. I’d love if perhaps when I finish it you could give your thoughts and feedback. Anyway, great video!

I think that the conviction that cut content should have been a part of the game (if the developers had more time, etc), is something that can make people unfairly judge a product that may actually be finished. Some content may actually be cut because it didn't fit. When I completed PP I felt the same way as I perceived the characters did; which was unsatisfied in a strange way. But since I at the same time was impressed by how the game's themes matched what I was feeling, I though that the game was complete as a story; albeit cause of the meta aspect of it.

Well Venom is you but you become Big Boss - the legend - the linguistic construct - the concept - your will is irrelevant because the game has branded you and moulded you into BB, effectively you are overwritten and subjugated. That was the angle I was going at, but I do accept I could have mentioned much more about the Medic and the actual BB. I will learn, thanks for the comment :)
@GutsTheBeast
@GutsTheBeast 8 жыл бұрын
You got the right idea but you didn't really go beyond that connection. Connect that same concept to Big Boss's character as well as The Boss's character and what ultimately leads Naked Snake from cutting his ties with the government. Big Boss wants to create Outer Heaven so he can create a nation where soldiers are no governments pawn and not taken advantage off. The man who left Zero because he consider those clones to be sick yet after GZ Big Boss goes along with Zero's plan to strip Venom of his past identity, and make him Big Boss while he goes in hiding and achieve his goals in the shadows. Venom is the best solider Big Boss had just like how the Boss was the best solider the government had but they scarified The Boss for the sake of their own political goals while Big Boss does the same to Venom. Essentially showing how Big Boss became the very monster that he once hated. You can apply MGS3 ending to Venom. The game set out to show Big Boss's moral downfall and it cleverly does it through Venom's character.

Ahhh, apologies, I understand now, I have two videos that explains that background / story in chronological order (why BB leaves the Government and his disillusionment etc. This video assumes you know that already. That is why I referred the viewers to the story explanations I made so they are on page / do not need extra plot fluff. Still I agree, it could have been added in there, but I worry that people turn off if it becomes too lengthy. I did a video on Nihilism in pop culture and people just turned off at about half way :( Maybe they just did not like my theory. Sister said it made a good lullaby... ouch!

You are The Joy, The Boss, but not The Boss yet, young naive, hopeful, skilled, over the course of the game you harden, tighten, and train a young boy that may some day he your end, but you love him, he is making you stronger, helping him only makes sence, your team is the Cobras and eventually it's found out all these missions have been constructed solely to equip a new "computer" with the ability to recreate "Missions in Virtual reality" in the future. If you can apply language to the hermetics concept of naming something and even athropomorphising it as "the power of creation" you can learn something great about how your version of the world was created.

Also I personally don’t believe in the game saying Ahab is the player and Ishmael is big boss. There’s too many inconsistencies, plus there’s the quote at the end: “there are no such things as facts, only interpretation”. There’s also the fact that the game labels it “truth” in a chapter filled with 1984 references. In that book the “ministry of truth” is a state propaganda outlet which creates convenient “truths” for its populace. I think the game and Kojima do the same there. They create something untrue to fool the player into empowerment and to make you feel as if you weren’t playing the role of the bad guy the whole time and were secretly a good guy (even tho diamond dogs do a lot of shady things throughout the game imo, though not as bad as big boss does in GZ, MG, and MG 2)

Absolutely. There's some other weird stuff in there as well - for example, even if you create a an avatar with a dark skin tone, the model in the Truth mission still has the skin color of Big Boss while in the hospital bed in first-person. I 100% agree that you're supposed to question whether the Truth mission actually represents what it says in the title.

Part of me agree with you, the title is The Phantom Pain, feeling the story is not ended. The game has a chapter, chapter 3 peace, which is almost impossible to achieve; The Nuclear disarmament which requires all players on each platform to reduce the number of Nukes to zero. Konami from time to time keeps posting the number of Nukes on each platform. Yet by the end of development, we read Konami and Kojima had problems which did effect the game development. The other part of me see missions 51 on youtube which is only 30% complete in animation. Is it a complete game with the intention to make you feel parts are missing, a Phantom Pain (breaking the fourth wall)? Or Did Kojima used what he have and went over budget and what we have the end result? Still a great game from Kojima, but wished it had more polish. "It's Diamond in the rough"

The lack of/cut story, the repetitive gameplay, the bullet sponge bosses with no creativity, the open world just created long and pointless car journeys, the game was far too easy (I got S Rank on every mission on my first try), MGO was horrendous and the AI was a lot worse than prior titles, they just stood around doing nothing! That's just naming a few from the top of my head but I'm glad you enjoyed more than I did! I think it's still an 8/10 game in my opinion, it's just that all the other games were 9 or even 10/10 for me.

To quote Kenji Yano (Kojima's only co-writer on Death Stranding, whom he considers a great friend, whom he was explaining everything about MGSV as early as 2011) - "the aim is to reveal that the system the world runs on defines Big Boss’s existence as “evil.” That’s why MGSV tells you distinctly that Ahab is you, the player. It says, now you have to experience first-hand the absurdity of being branded a villain by the manipulating ways of the global status quo." Big Boss -Did not create Ahab himself, that was Zero -Did not leave immediately, but stayed at the hospital to keep Ahab safe -Did not pursue revenge himself (explicitly setting up Outer Heaven to be a nation "independent of the struggles for supremacy, for personal profit, the cycles of revenge between countries") -Gave Ocelot orders to treat Eli "like any other person" that Ocelot disobeyed, telling Eli of his origins leading ultimately to Kingdom of the Flies & MGS1 -Did not invite the greedy sadistic angry torturer-murderers like Miller or Ocelot to Outer Heaven, did invite Venom -Told Solid Snake the mission was over and to turn off the game console -Rescued his enemies in the Outer Heaven Resistance and children from NATO (America)'s indiscriminate genocidal bombing of the entire area once his deterrent was destroyed by Solid Snake -Did not actually use child soldiers as combatants like many people think Ahab is not an unremarkable ordinary person, he is MSF's best man. He's your COOPS partner, one of those guys at Barranquilla before Kaz got the Cipher money flowing, etc. He knows at the end who he was, but he had no tomorrow anyway (in fact, soon nobody will under Cipher's control), while together with Big Boss they have a "hope for the future" where "the world will no longer need us. No need for the gun, or the hand to pull the trigger" "That's what I - what we - will leave as our legacy."

I think the best rebuttal to your argument can be found in the original identity of Ishmael, which was Huey; had he been the "narrator", the game probably would clearly have framed Diamond Dogs as the villains, as he represents that American POV which brands Big Boss a threat. But since the "narrator" of the game ends up being Big Boss instead, the perspective we have on Diamond Dogs and Snake is different; they are the heroes, they are saving the world. And they do save it, since Skullface's plans are truly awful. But saving the world doesn't wipe away all the evil that DD (and later OH and Zanzibar Land) perpetuate - the blood money, the children raised into soldiers, the nuclear weapons, and most significantly when considering TPP - the cult-like mentality. Huey is the only one who even questions this in the game, but Diamond Dogs is just a straight up cult, and one with basically a warlord as the cult leader. But when our Ishmael, our window to the events, is Big Boss, we don't see it that way. We see a group of heroes, saving the world from evil. But as Ocelot says, the truth will always catch up to you, which is shown in that last scene, staring back at you in the mirror. There is no black and white, strict good and evil here - the one thing I haven't really seen discussed all that much about TPP is just how well the Demon Snake characterises Big Boss: he is a man who wants to make the world a better place and drive out the demon inside. Of course it is BB's phantom who actually says the latter line, but I've always seen Venom's thoughts as Big Boss' thoughts, and his silent moments as moments of our own thoughts, so I basically see his speeches as representations of Big Boss' thoughts. Ultimately, the end result would be the same duality that we all have between selfish and selfless, but for a man like Big Boss, those sides become the Hero and the Demon. Both are him, and neither negate the other - the good deeds don't wash away the bad ones, and the bad and megalomaniac deeds don't undo the good and noble ones.

very interesting and unique take however reality is always more simple and blunt yes venom was totaly used this is espionage action what people refuse to relize is the callous standby kojima makes by saying yes u are big boss u ate apart of it all but there is only 1 boss and only 1 kojima now maybe everyone can lay this to rest the ending is not crazy at all it's a classic layer by layer setup and people who u understand the ending have no reason to debate it hope this clears it up for everyone kojima himself did or said something that someone realy did not like he is pretty strange and pervey as well he gets to much credit i can give him his accept his arrogance this time we as fans made him in a sense all the crazy stuff he put into his games via controller 2 or a naked flipping raiden to ball grabs and jerk off sound bytes with women s posters is all insane shit we let him get away with this ending of his final game was purposefully dark and he didnt say fuck the players so much as other things also in a way that is why we debate this but there is nothing to debate a statement was made and it's blatent for those who know his work best it's dark it's a double cross and kojima reminds us who is king why well when else has his work been criticized never he saw this coming and it's konami'S fault

In terms of the aesthetic it is reasonably reflective although obviously the country has plenty more to it as the game only has barren bits / open world parts of it. I am pretty sure it does not replicate a specific region of though but I could be wrong.

So I completely skipped over this game (despite downloading it for free on ps+) because I heard the story sucks and it’s an incomplete game. Watching your videos on MGSV makes me want to play it and skip Red Dead 2.

If what you are meaning to say that the willingness to carry out revenge becomes tiresome, fatiguing and almost unresolvable then yes. Who knows what Kojima was thinking or feeling, he has in the past said the next MGS is the last but looking at what happened between him and Konami I think it was more to do with creative restrictions than carrying on a franchise.

Language doesn't control us, our personal views do... Also, you're going WAY too deep. Big Boss isn't speaking to US handing US the mantel of Big Boss. He's talking to his friend ( The Medic ).

Language doesn't control us But it does influence us Quite a bit in fact If you want an example, consider the linguistic differences between English and Japanese and how that has a very real impact on the social structure of the west and Japan
