When it blew apart from heating, it was still at some height; but it was a powerful enough explosion to flatten 830 square miles of trees. Computer modeling finally nailed it down as a 65 meter diameter asteroid that blew 6-9 miles from the ground. Anything comes in at the speed these do and if it isn't big enough the heat generated just turns it to dust....quickly enough that it's a 'bang' roughly the size of a thermonuclear bomb.

LOL cool video.. but actually has zero to do with the song itself. The song is part of a group of songs based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. He created a mythos based upon Ancient Ones and Elder Gods that existed prior to mankind. Cthulhu herself is one of them, and the instrumental song 'Call of Ktulu' off of the 'Ride The Lightning' album is a tribute to her.. so to speak lol. The song 'The Thing That Should Not Be' is also based upon one of the gods in the Cthulhu mythos. That god is named Dagon.. or Father Dagon (paired with Mother Hydra if you happen toplay the 'Call of Cthulhu pen-and-paper roleplaying game.) This song, All Nightmare Long, is based upon a group of creatures within the mythos caled 'The Hounds of Tindalos' which are basically wolves that hunt you through their nightmares. If I remember properly, the way you attract their attention is by time travel. Then the hunt is on. The last song is off of their newest album, "Hardwired.. To Self-Destruct," and is called "Dream No More" which is, again, dedicated to Cthulhu. As an avid RPG gamer from the 80's and 90's, I was extremely happy that Metallica had a shared interest in these things.
