Re-listening to J. Cole's music from his earlier projects. Hearing ANY bar about how he's the best is automatically going to age poorly after this Kendrick apology 😂. You had the golden opportunity in 2024 to prove that you were the best and you chose not to do that. So all of these bars don't hit now.
@loron340

Yep, you hit the nail on the head with that description. Even listening to this project is gonna be hard to listen back to for a while which is crazy because before the apology, I actually enjoyed this mixtape (besides 7 Minute Drill). Now, I probably won’t listen to this project again until the end of this year.

This mixtape don’t have Chicago freestyle though. But fr, I feel like, and I’ve been saying this for years, J Cole doesn’t have a true voice, he wants to have the success and mainstream sound Drake has, but also wants the consciousness and acclaim Kendrick has. He does the Drake and Kendrick imitation recently, but doesn’t excel. He’s great at rapping though, if he was our self Like this technical freestyler, it would be cool. But freestylers and album rappers are two different things

My hope is that this trans bar isn't an indication of Cole doubling down on "anti-woke" rap. It's reqlly put a lot of things in a different light for me: -The beef with Noname where she called him out for being "fake progressive" for saying nothing during BLM protests -"They be fake progressive and woke, I started saying less" feels a lot less of a call out of social media activism and more a disassociation with his identity as a "Conscious rapper" -The odd misogynistic and homophobic lines before which I wrote off as just a product of the time, but feel a lot more unsettling now It just has me a little concerned is all. Hopefully, he doesn’t double down on this.

People are being unnecessarily harsh on this project in my opinion. It's not a proper album like 2014 FHD or what TFO will be. It's clearly just a mixtape to tide fans over until TFO, so it deserves a bit of grace. It's also better than 90% of the trash being dropped these days anyway. I do acknowledge however that the bars about being the best now can't seriously be entertained due to the Kendrick fiasco.
