I’m anxious to try when I go to pool on Friday. I tried the drill in one of your other videos with the fist. Swim freestyle with fist. That was absolutely eye opening. I was able to make some adjustments to my arms.

Susan G fantastic! It really is eye opening and I’m happy you had the same experience. That drill will get you started in the right direction for adapting to the “catch” which will help avoid swimming from the shoulders improperly. Love it and thank you keeping me posted! 🙌🏽🏊🏼‍♀️ -Coach Mandy

Great vlog! Thanks, I have a different question related to the kick in freestyle : how can I improve the kick more from the hip and less from the knee?
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 5 жыл бұрын
Hi S Jan ! Actually this topic relates to your question. If there is tension in your ankles typically will lead to bending the knees too much. When you relax your ankles you learn to shift the focus to your hips. The bonus tip at the end of this video will help you! 😄 Another strategy you can use is go ahead and bend your knees with purpose so you feel what happens and then correct it by kicking only from your hips. The power of the kick happens from your glutes and hips. Try this out and keep me posted! -Coach M 🏊🏼‍♀️

300 mts butterfly kicks & 200 mts backstroke kicks focusing on maintain ankles as loose as possible. intrarotation of feet ...intermittent, to put it mildly, but surely helpfull

Luca Gian great! Yes you start to also notice a difference if you ever have problems are calf cramps in the water. If you let go of the tension in your ankles you won't have this problem. It takes time but it's great to are incorporating it into other strokes! -Coach M

One more tip that I was not aware. Btw will dorseeflex position over a long period not cause a tension in the front side of the shin?

Hi Mandy, you drive your arms in well below the surface at the front of the stroke. What’s the thinking there? Thanks again for another really well demonstrated video.
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! That's a good question... so the reason why my arm depth is deeper during this demo is because I've slowed my tempo down to demonstrate the kick. As my tempo increases the extension will slightly raise up higher due to momentum. You can see this in one of my earlier videos (watch the whole video but pay attention to the difference at the 2:16-2:30 time mark) click below: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7ufaMxznr2cYKM.html The shoulders are relaxed when you are not extending ”up hill” .Try out the difference and let me know how it goes. - Coach M

Hi Mandy, thanks for the informative video. Lately I have been getting calf cramps while swimming and can't figure out why this is happening or what I should do to to overcome the issue. It only happens when swimming which is weird. I can run for 1 hour and never get a cramp but within 15 minutes of swimming I experience painful calf cramps. Do you have any advise on what I can do to prevent calf cramps? Thank you.
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 5 жыл бұрын
MeMyselfandI oh yes this is very common especially for triathletes. The reason why you are getting calf cramps in the water is because you are holding tension in your ankles and your feet when you swim. When you keep pushing off the wall it is only a matter of time until a cramp is triggered. Using a combination of flexibility exercises for your ankles plus the bonus tip in this video will help let go of tension. If you try Dorsiflexion with your feet and then relax your feet ( what I demo in the video ) you will be able to feel the difference and ultimately you will let go of the tension. Try is out and let me know if you have any issues during your next practice! Bottom line... when in doubt, just relax. 😎 -Coach M

Hi coach mandy in freestyle arms, is it a pull or is it a push ? Tnx
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 5 жыл бұрын
Shal Dominguez great question Shal. So think of this movement as “pressing” back. If you “pull” the tendency is to drop the elbow and forearm so you lose the catch. Let me know if this helps! 👍🏼 -Coach Mandy

Hi coach mandy , the pressing back arm movement , my son said he feels a lighter pull ....the pulling arm action sometimes he feels a pain in his shoulder , thanks ....stay beautiful!
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 5 жыл бұрын
@@tivashomemade Hi Shal! So the best thing to do right now is to not prioritize this part of the stroke especially at his age. This is a fast, complex movement and it is best to have him focus on what is moving forward versus what is moving back. The slight pain may be due to pulling from the shoulder improperly and not yet establishing the "catch". His focus should be on streamlining the body and learning how to properly balance from his core/lats at this time. If anything, this video below is a good drill to have him try but at a slow rate: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNJxhrCaysuaiIE.html Another part of the stroke he can focus on is relaxing the neck and shoulders as seen in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZuWqreDnamtfJ8.html Lastly, the scapular plane video I have made to to give reference of where the shoulder moves: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6uEnpWBr5PQYac.html Bottom line, if he feels any pain do not push through this feeling. Have him slow down and redirect his focus on something else such as what is shown in video #2 I shared above. The catch is no where near as important as having proper posture in the water. Let me know if this helps! - Coach Mandy

Hi mandy,, Informative video,,am struggling with breathing out in d water,,i can't blow bubbles more than 2 seconds, I feel immediately i have to take a breath n feel exhausted within few minutes.....how to fix this, plz help me
@TheVikingquest
@TheVikingquest 5 жыл бұрын
I struggled with this too for months. Initially i breath in mouth and blew out mouth. This had to change to always breathing out through nose ( for me easier to controle). I also underestimated just how much u have too control the brearhing - if u cant exhaust almost all air u took in u will get winded as carbonide oxid builds up (for me this means swimming only 25 m - ezhausted.) If u hold y breath out too much same result, exhaution. Try blow out, a constant slow stream! Dont take in too much air! Try to take a little more quicker brearh in, make sure u still belly breathe. When u fail, just lie on your side kicking and just breathe in and out over water - give yourself time! U will solve this! Dont give up. I had to take a swummers course to learn this - we swam 10 meters taking just one stroke one breath for hours on end. Eventually u wull swim 25 yards and then we walked back on land... dont assume its easy, but u will get it.

Arunkumar BG Hi Arun I definitely understand your frustration. What you are going through is very common and it is a process that is possible to overcome. It will take time, patience, and consistency. It starts with identifying the issue and learning how to relax properly before moving forward. I have a free ebook and podcast on this subject to get you in the right mindset click the links below to help with your practice: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6uReJiTvrCxeYU.html “Coach Mandy’s Top 5 Freestyle Breathing Tips” Ebook bit.ly/2Etfokv Keep me posted throughout your practice and be sure to take your time and continue to focus on being in a relaxed state of mind. Try to avoid being self critical as these types of reactions will lead you to feel frustrated and unable to think clearly. What do adult runners with stiff ankles/feet do about this?
@SWIMVICE

Sam Elgore using combination of flexibility exercises out of the pool and actually going through this drill will help. Using fins is another tool to help improve range of motion for the ankles. I work with quite a few runners and it’s daily stretching and working through it consistently. It just takes time. 👍🏼🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach Mandy
