The only time I feel my time is my own is when I'm on the bike. At all other times it seems there's always someone wanting a piece of me.

I'm hearing you mate. Being available and useful is part of being a bloke I think, for me that shows responsibility and, in many ways, love for my family and friends. BUT we do need our time too, time to refresh and feel revived and rested, and that is not selfish. Cheers mate!

Hi Matt, thanks for detailing your cost - I´d generally suggest that any biker on longer trips has some dextrose and a 1,5 l water bottle at any time. Energy bars are good as long as they´re w/o chocolate (melts in no time no matter where on the bike they´re stored). If available apples are also good as little snack when stopping to refuel the bike. You´re a 100% right - eating during a riding day makes you tired - no good idea - I suggest to anyone to avoid it. Not being a friend of camping I always book hotel rooms cos even the cheapest one is a better place to R&R then any camping spot / tent. After having a shower in a nice hotel and going out in casual wear having a nice dinner and reviewing the riding day is the best way to spend the evening after a day of riding (you sure know what I mean ;-) ). Glad to hear you reconsidered priorities to get to a better work-life-balance (which is by the way a strange term as work is just a part of life not a counterpart to it). Stay safe

Some good advice there mate. On my return journey in November I did stay in cheap hotels. It was the end of season and could get a night for about £30. It was a more comfortable experience without doubt. Nice with a shower too!

I always carry a 1.5 litre bottle of water when riding in southern Europe. A few sips when fuelling up enough for the evening and a coffee in the morning. Virtually anyone can do without food for a couple of days but without water things soon get sketchy. Looking forward to your next trip, thanks for taking the time to film it 👍

Thanks mate. I didn't do well on the water thing riding down. Kept getting a bit dehydrated. Next trip will involve more water for sure!

Unfortunately, I seem to have lost the will to camp with a tiny, light tent (old age knocking at the door)?. Buying a tent where i'm almost able to stand in, is too expensive and too bulky, to justify the price. . My new system, is, pick a nice region, drive there, find a small holiday appartement to rent, and do 3 or 4 day trips in that area, before moving on to the next region and appartement. Yes I spend more on acommodation, but save on food by buying at a cheapish supermarket and knocking up something simple myself when I arrive back at the appartement. I have something in this manner on the drawing board for this summer, and wonder if I can accomplish a daily rate as cheap as yours was. PS. doing it this way, might even entice a lovely wife to accompany you, should you ever consider such a system..., and manage to make a biker out of her!! Ride safe Matt and watch that back, your feet and hands on the worksite, you'll need them soon, better weather is on it's way.

Thanks mate. I must admit that does sound like a great system. On my way home I did use cheap hotels because of the weather. It was the very end of the season and the hotels were closing. I managed to get some hotels for around £30 a night which was a real treat. I only took 6 days to get home too so it also ended up fairly cheap. I'm working on getting Lillian on the bike...

Food and drink has to be paid for wherever you are so i dont count that. In 2019 i bought my bike in UK and rode it to Kosovo where i live via a week around Wales then a week in France, Italy and into Albania, loved it, camp sites at about 8 quid a night, go cheap, go now.

Go cheap, go now. That's a good motto to get out on your bike! Very true about food and drink, that needs to be paid for whoever you are.

I think all in all I wouldn't be too far from that. I did stay in hotels coming home, cheap ones, but they were more expensive that camping. I did make it home in 6 days though, so did save a bit on accomodation. I'll figure out the return price at some point.
