As someone who traveled the country playing mtg and loved every second of it...I completely sold out and went to Lorcana, less bullshit, plays amazing, HUGEEEEE competetive scene and somehow we got to the point where childrens disney characters look more badass than magic cards....no regrets

The Hatsune Miku Secret lair artwork is very underwhelming, only Harmonize looks good. I’ve seen comments on Reddit trying to hype that Secret lair saying things like “ Omg weebs are gonna pay premium for that…” And to be honest if I were to go premium with Hatsune Miku , I’d buy a Hatsune Miku: Happy 16th Birthday Ver. 1/7 Figure or even cards from Weiss Schwarz Project Diva instead of Mtg cards…. I don’t like the ugly Miku from WotC.

I think if you were to look back on the last 5 or so years of MTG, you could say that about a lot of cards. What allows MTG to use AI without it being so blatantly obvious they're doing it is that their corporatised art direction *already* resulted in art that felt weirdly uniform and uncannily impersonal.

I like the theme of OTJ and the cards are solid. Not that they were the masculine cowboys i had hoped for but even with the jav boy fan art style the western theme still worked. Serious question, do you consider yourself manly? Im finding those that dont, dont like otj.

Isn’t there already a Magda card in Thunder Junction? This could have been a really cool story; sort of like Magic meets Borderlands and Fallout with an All-Star cast of Legends and Planeswalkers. But after creating this intriguing setup, they just spit out a quick, low-effort narrative with an absolute damp squib of an ending. That Secret Lair could have been five other popular characters in special Wanted treatments who weren’t in the main story but were maybe having an adventure of their own on Thunder Junction, and WotC could have released a specific short story covering this timed to the Lair release. Instead we got ugly slush art featuring a n unimportant character who already had a card in the set and a dead Planeswalker. Of course Wizards needs Universes Beyond; they don’t give a crap about their own story and haven’t since the end of War of the Spark.

Mogis secret lair...that itself is a cool idea. They could do some commander secret lairs dedicated to the character, like Atraxa themed or Light-Paws themed, etc. That is something I might actually be interested in.

The Thunder Junction Secret Lair features outlaw characters who don’t have an outlaw creature type because they were made way before the batching. It felt obvious to me but apparently I’m the only one who realized it?

The only way to confirm this left over art theory, you need to question the artist of those recent cards,when they got commissioned for it and what they were asked for.

I didn't even know what Hatsune Miku was, but apparently some of my friends are digging it, so I'm happy for them. But literally nothing else so far in this superdrop is attracting me. The 'April Fools' card treatments are so repulsive I don't want them, and I'm usually a crazy collector of just about anything.

It's sad. Out of all the things to kill off something for me, poor corporate decisions like this are what just killed the game for me. Not through power creep, not through money creep, but through lazy corporate decisions for AI and stupid ideas that some rando thought was cool and hip at Wizards of the Coast.

There was no need to throw shade at Miku. And to be fair, she is the oldest Vocaloid software and character from almost two decades ago. That's why she has a 1 on her arm. She's version 1.0. I am surprised to learn how many people were previously unaware of Miku or vocaloid. But perhaps my perspective is skewed by a life of being a weeaboo and living in Japan the past decade, where every brand and franchise has Miku collaborations. The secret lair could be better. Harmonise is a home run. Thematically appropriate and with beautiful art. Inspiring Vantage looks good, too, but I am not sure why it's there beyond being a dual land for the Feather deck. The rest of it isn’t great. Most of the cards are off model and make her look uncanny. Azusa looks more like a doll than a person. And Feather looks like Corporate Memphis or a Tumblr "fixed your art, now she looks like a real Asian" hackjob. I am hoping the other Miku lairs are better.

Wizards has a growing problem cropping up with regards to art: They don't pay enough to compete with video game companies, which pay a *lot* more with less uncertainty in employment. Would I rather scrape $1k-3k a month perpetually hustling for more Magic work to survive, or make $5k-6k+ consistently each month doing concept work month after month with the added bonus of health insurance and a 401k? My guess though is that they won't fully go the AI route unless the courts give AI companies a massive win, so they're probably just using slush art now to pad their expenditures a bit and commission a bare minimum amount of new pieces.

I actually like the magda card , looks like old D&D art. Never imagined though that the secret lairs would become this bad though. I use to always buy at least one box now its dissolved to liking two cards from the whole drop which isn't enough to incentivize a purchase.

Didn't catch that "targeet" spelling, but Massacre should have a similar problem, since U and w/o are also not part of the MTG vocabulary (even if the meaning will be clear to most people). But in practice it probably doesn't even matter, since you will always fall back to the oracle text in case of anything being unclear.

Slight clarification - the secret lair called "Hatsune Miku" is not actually a Hatsune Miku secret lair, it's a "cosplaying Hatsune Miku" secret lair. It's basically the equivalent of a Star Wars secret lair saying "You guys hate Hayden Christensen, right? And who even is Ewan Mcgregor? I'll help you out and replace these no-name actors with photos I found of random people in Star Wars halloween costumes".

So it's not a bunch of geeks who are foolish enough to spend totally unreasonable prices on little cardboard triangles to play a game once a week acting like other geeks who like creating music using an artificial singer represented by a drawn character or at least listening to music made by such people are somehow inferior to them.... I just looked it up. I only know Hatsune Miku in passing, and only Harmonize looked like her to me. (and maybe the land, since it doesn't show the face, but even then it looked weird.) Definitely some weird choices on the art.

The person didnt draw the anatomy right for the Greasefang's face. It looks they attempted to make a lab-rat looking character, draw whisker holes of a cat and put a dog nose on it. To fix this issue, WotC would've had to take the time to call this out.

Personally I am siked for the Vocaloid cards. Vocaloid has been a huge part of my life for well over 15 years, so seeing it become what it has had made me extremely happy. It also having decent cards makes it all the better.

I know exacly why I turned Most of my Collection into Money when Wizzard descided to Print X Thousands super master XY Sets. Sold Lilis for 50/piece now it is at 15. Same with basically 90% of the cards I sold (year, played at the time of the Big Goyf era). They are milking every penny out of the Community. Thought they will stomp down MtG now I‘m Not that sure about but now every Player seems pissed and I get feedback from a Ton of ppl that leave MtG and take a look at other Games.

Once upon a time cards were classy and respectful works of art, with purpose, feel. You had unhinged and Unglued but they were in alternate borders, set apart. I just don't think the game is better for these kinds of things, promos, etc. They completely take away from the respectable atmosphere the game once had, and that is important whether they want to believe it or not. I think cards should hold value, I also miss the days before so many variations existed, editions, etc. Reprints are great, but now foils are nothing special, and as cool as collector sets are, they just kind of shame poorer players for not being able to invest in them. I'm not so down on collector products I just that I wish these turns in product never happened, that things stayed how they were. I just really miss the way the game used to be, simpler, but more meaningful, valuable, the products were equal to the consumers in class. I have a theory that what is actually happening is that they are gradually pushing people away from the paper market and more to digital. In time card mechanics will be so beyond the scale of managing the game on paper due to the convenience of digital assistance. I would hope that never becomes the reality, just kind of truly what is able to happen, and if profits tip the digital scales to that end.

There is a Hatsune Miku Secret Lair? I really don't follow MTG at all, I just watch a video here and there, so I don't know a ton about the game, but I certainly know well enough, that an anime-type franchise has no place in something like MTG. And I do like anime artstyle, characters, media etc., it just has no place in something like MTG. These Comic Sans cards are also so damn ugly.

I really wish people had a better perspective on bad SLs everyone complains they are bad but don't realize it's actually a good thing for them cause guess what? It's now a product you don't even need to worry about getting. It's saving people money. If every SL was amazing and cool oh boy our wallets would be done or we would be upset we can't get them. That been said is exactly why I am buying all the Miku ones because you know as well as I do once sold out they are gonna sell for tons. So instead of needing to buy other SLs which I may have wanted to do if they were good I am glad Miku is so far the only interesting one.

The text on the April Fool's Secret Lair is ridiculous! The artwork is good though. The Thunder Junction Secret Lair is GARBAGE! None of those cards doesn't even fit in with the Thunder Junction theme let alone Magic. The artwork is terrible. Players should not buy this GARBAGE Secret Lair. I will NOT buy these!!! Like I said before, Wizards loves to go CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! Thank you for the video Magic Historian.

I disagree with your interpretation of the vocaloid software. The way you worded it made it sound like AI (which it isnt, it's a voice synthesizer!) Regardless, it doesn't have any place in MTG, but I think you could argue that a music-creation software, a creative outlet, like Vocaloid has more of a place in Magic than idk. Transformers LOL But its really comparing apples to slightly more rotten apples. Thanks for the vid purp
