Magic: the gathering has just shared the latest round of bans with its December 4, 2023 banned and restricted announcement. Multiple cards have been banned across three formats and we also have one unbanning.

Modern player here. Grief needed to get hit for sure. In my opinion most of the cards that say "pitch a card from your hand instead of paying mana" should probably all be removed as well. Next up is the One Ring. I heard others say it should be limited to one, and I guess that fits the cards name. Next up is Bowmaster, Wren in Six and some others that have made one toughness creatures a lot worse. Then lastly is the monkey. Perhaps the most powerful one drop ever created, and it needs to go. Then we would be back to something that is normal. Having said that, I am sure they will push the power level even more with the next Horizons set.

I hear people say ragavan is the most powerful one drop printed all the time, but that is clearly deathrite shaman. It does so much more than ragavan and is easier to cast.

@@joshuagriffith9191yeah, Ragavan isn't the best one-drop, it's the best aggressive one-drop for taking over the early game. Those are functionally similitudinous in the decks Ragavan features in, since a strong head start is crucial for aggro to be successful, but Ragavan can definitely be a dead draw during a board stall. Deathrite Shaman is great at boosting you in the early game, stabilizing you in the midgame, and ending the game if it slows to a grind, all while acting as a hate-piece for powerful graveyard strategies and basically ignoring mana fixing requirements to cast for the decks it is run in.

5:24 standard meta actually is diverse. There's so many ways you can run black. Now what if you don't enjoy the black slice of the color pie? TOO BAD. I mean literally 40% of the arena meta and 80% of tournaments are running black.

I read Gavin pauper article on the banning of Monastery Swiftspear. Basically even thought mono red is not even in the top 5 deck based on win percent we are banning it because others don't like Mono red decks. So they have to devote too much sideboard hate for it. Mono Red is one of the cheapest deck and easiest for new players to learn.

@@collinbeal It’s all RNG in Arena. As far as paper goes, just look at it as RNG as well, I opened 2 set boxes of LOTR so 72ish packs and I got 5 or 6 Nazgul in addition to 3 Orcish Bowmasters. Hottest round of booster box gambling I’ve ever had.

If ppl are winning on turn 3 then the easy fix is to power creep so players win on turn 2 and when that becomes a problem then creep to turn 1 then it can just be a game for the love of shuffling like it was always intended to be

@@antearesgamer Sales volumes are going to continue to tank if Standard continues to become more unplayable, Commander players will spend a lot of money on individual purchases but they only need one of any particular card so they will buy less and open less packs. I will freely admit my playstyle is currently down to just prereleases and maybe two bundles a set.

I'm happy that they actually made a decision in Pioneer, but I do think that Fable and Treasure Cruise should have been mentioned at least. Treasure Cruise is the cornerstone to the most popular deck in Pioneer right now, and in that deck it's essentially ancestral recall as early as turn 3. A resolved Fable is never not a 2 for 1, but often a 3 for 1 and there is a reason why the majority of midrange and control shells splash red, exclusively for that card alone.

They just released another card that can functionally be an Ancestral Recall on turn 3 with the right setup in Wilds of Eldraine, so I don't necessarily think that that's a fair assessment. An Ancestral Recall that makes you do a backflip from a handstand is not Ancestral Recall. Relatively fair point on Fable, though; that card is gas, then a gas explosion, then a flash fire.

I'll still never understand why people who don't compete in tournaments want to play organised sanctioned formats in the first place. Just play with cards that are fun and have a good time and spend only as much money as you want to without feeling forced to keep up with lists and meta and all that; is a game after all. Games are meant to be fun 🤷🏽‍♂️

You know what is the most strange thing? There's a card called Etali's Favor that can even be blinked to do similar kinds of insanity that Geological Appraiser does. (Yes, it has an ETB without the "if you cast it" and it discovers for its own mana cost, so it can hit itself)

@@viniciuslorenzini7195 Appraiser had a if it was cast clause, so cloning shouldn't work. This is more like Indomitable Creativity combo if you use the aura as in both cases destroying the target fizzles the spell

@@christianbarrett3040 That depends on the kind of cloning, if it's a creature that "enters as a copy" it works, because it was cast and it is a copy of the Appraiser, so things like Glasspool Mimic do in fact work and continue the chain.

@@viniciuslorenzini7195 I suppose in that very niche type of cloning it works, but that doesn't change the fact that using the aura is much more fragile and disruptable. Also as most clones don't copy enchantments the aura isn't a great replacement unless you hit something else with it.

Because commander is inherently about playing for fun, and banning cards is often a bad idea for a Format that isn’t played competitively being hosted by the company. Plus, everyone can just decide not to play dockside cause it’s meant to be a fun game and they don’t want dockside.

I understand the 'commander is for fun thought' but it is still a format that is taken seriously by many people and the same can be said about Bowmaster. No-one is forcing anyone to play it. It is a choice being made to pit it into a deck. People can choose not to run it as well. I understand the inherent issues with 'competitive formats, but a problem is still a problem. Just like many 60 card format players will say 'it makes my deck stronger and better to play Bowmaster, so why wouldn't I play it? I need to compete.' The same is said by commander players. Power creep and the urge to 'compete is in that format as well.

@@blindcommander the difference is commander isn’t ran by official wizards tournaments like pro tours or Grand Prix. That’s why in modern, orcish bowmasters is such a necessity to play in official competitive formats, cause to be the best at the game means to also play the best cards in the game.

they should have just errata'd evoke to exile the card if it tries to leave your graveyard that turn - would have still been plenty strong but stopped the scamming bowmasters and the ring should probably be restricted - that doesn't seem unreasonable

I think the banning of 'Up the Beanstalk' and now that 2/3 cost mana cards are becoming so powerful is highlighting a problem with recent Wizard's design philosphy. Cards that cost 5+ mana shouldn't really need that kind of support, and lower cost cards are dominating all formats. So there just isn't enough focus now on power creeping cards that cost 4+ now (Except things liek Geological Appraiser). 4+ mana costs were always a bit of a risk in Standard in particular as Standard is a 'fast' format, but now these more expensive cards, particularly when you're reaching 6+ mana costs, just aren't keeping up with the power creep in the same way, and that is making them quite redundant by comparison to the more powerful 2/3 cost cards we see printed today.

Which is kind of my problem with standard at the moment. I liked it because it was less powerful than modern and such, which you would think would translate to slower than them as well. That isn't really how it has worked out though. The game just kept speeding up over the years.

Seems like a modern ban announcement is not a possible thing if a modern Master set is released unless it is considered an emergency ban announcement. The same thing seems to apply to other legacy formats that are focusing on standard release windows and yet non standard supplement sets for modern still seems to be a thing.

@@joshuagriffith9191 it was an example of a supplemental magic product made for eternal formats I acknowledge I didn't say modern horizons but it is the same concept but with different branding and name so if you are trying to convert me on saying I said a word instead of a different one I commend you on the effort you took to type your comment I just got off work to be informed of your comment as I checked my phone and i am just proving clarity so it's clear to you and anyone else who is going to try to comment on the statement for wotc only banning for standards set releases time frame and not before or immediately after a modern legal or other eternal legal set releases by the wording they provided and I was expressing concern for that even though they will provide the potential for an emergency ban. I hope this adds some level understanding before someone else comments a response that doesn't pertain to the concept of the band going forward and yet I know it will not stop people from being inept and mentally devoid.

I think the most recent set ixalan is the start to getting magic the gathering to be just like Yu-Gi-Oh. The power creep with this most recent set is absolutely insane. I play a land and then I discover four oh I get this massive card now. It reminds me of yu-gi-oh, will you play one card that lets you get any card out of your deck and then you play that card to get you two cards and then you get a synchro summon that then taps out into your deck for two fusion monsters that then goes into an XYZ summon that gets you four normal monsters to the field and those all XYZ summon into another synchro and then you link because you link some and you get to link special summon another card, and all the sudden you have seven cards on the field. That is the future for magic the gathering

Yeah, I don't give a cr*p about MTG and the only reason why I ended up here is that the KZfaq algorithm, probably reasonably, given that I can agree that there's a fair bit of overlap between the audiences, interprets MTG as 'TTRPG adjacent' and so it linked up this drama while I was looking at some D&D drama. Anywho, I thought I'd drop a like and a comment in the channel to help with visibility, as I did like the enthusiasm and humor of the intro. Consider: Expanding the time for banning to five weeks after set release means more people can invest in top cards. This means more profits for Hasbro. There is no altruistic reason behind the decisions. It is 100 percent profit driven.

I remember a long time ago I was waiting for a Type 2 (as it was known back then) tourny to start and while we waited two guys decided to throw down and do a Type 1 game. Player 2 never .... got ... a turn. Player 1 ... I can't remember what all cards he used (I'm pretty sure Time Walk was one?) but he effectively took 2 or 3 turns and lobbed a 20 pt fireball by the time he was done. So yeah ... player 2 didn't have a chance to play a single card.

I was actually getting an itch to play some Magic cos it's been close to a year now. Wizard's collection on MY Arena account actually isn't bad, so I was thinking of updating and taking a spin, but I hear you correctly? Historic is now a rotating format and _Alchemy is now a part of Historic?_ Cos that has put me right off... Screw Alchemearthstone, seriously. Does Arena have any non-rotating formats now? Preferably a Historic without the Alchemy? I actually really like the (now old) Historic format. I think it's open enough to enjoy playing with cards you have. It just gets a bit tiresome running into the power creep of recent cards.

Yeah, it wasn't exactly the same, and it was called Frontier, but was kinda like Pioneer... The real reason of it's inception was though that Hareruya (the chain of lgs that started it) wanted to sell the cards that rotated out of standard and and were worth nothing... 😅

Japan has had cards printed in Japanese since 4th edition back in the 90's. I have a 4 card play set of Japanese lightning bolt in the original art in Japanese black border because sometimes when a foreign language is printed for the first time it is in black border. Hence why my Japanese 4th Ed is black boarder same with why some revised edition cards are printed in European languages in black boarder.

Ban a $2 uncommon to prevent having to directly ban additional $20+ cards. Not exactly a hard choice PR wise. I do see it being one of those cards that, in 5 years no one will remember why exactly it was banned.

One Ring isn't legal in Pioneer. (Karn is still legal in modern).

I think the One Ring and Orcish BowMasters are more powerful than Up The Beanstalk. Wow.... you can get 2, 3, or 4 rares and mythics in a Play Booster pack. BIG DEAL!!! Players are tired of getting rares and mythics that are worth .2 cents to 6 cents in a pack while paying a higher price for the pack / box. Wizards is just milking the players for even more money. See wotc got it wrong right off the bat for every format by saying balanced . Yeah sure you want the formats to be balanced for big tournaments but most people aren't playing in big tournaments . Most people want it to be fun and it isn't exactly fun going up against the same 5 - 10 high powered decks that don't really let your opponent play the game .

I’ve got to say at non REL events (and honestly most REL events), in modern I come across a different deck every round. Modern is like every almost every eternal format outside of Pioneer. There is a large number of things you can do, but there will always be a most played deck.

It will ruin limited. Every high power set has been a failure in limited because it removes the skill element. with that and these crazy modern and pioneer decks where you win after a few turns, all the important decisions will take place during the mulligan phase of the game. It doesn’t seem like the magic I remember 😮

The Modern format no longer exists. It should now be renamed Modern Horizons. The original idea of Modern was to use old standard cards and that format was relatively stable for that reason. You could invest in a deck and get good playing it. Every new set people would be looking for pieces that made their deck better and sometimes a card would get printed in standard that would be powerful enough to build around in modern. Then the horizons sets hit and upended all of this. I originally got into modern because of its stability. I work long hours so deckbuilding every few months and rotation for standard is hard so a stable format which doesn't change suits me... this isn't modern anymore. I would play pioneer but its pretty much a dead format where I am.

A good solution for player could be a buyback option for banned cards. .. Never will happen.. .. It would be nice if any player who owns a banned card to sell this card directly to wotc for an acceptable prize near to eg. Card market. .. All cards would be worth more with such an option. Is an elk out there with an oko 😂
