I think Charles was setting Jim up for failure regardless with that kick. Either he ducks & misses it, tries to block it with his hands (that's a no-no), or just gets pelted by the ball like Phyllis. I may be an arrogant American who doesn't play soccer, but I've seen it enough to know you don't pass a ball like that to someone that close to you.

They used three Mattes, 1 with charles kicking the ball, one with phillis reacting, and one with Jim reacting. Then they blended them together using fake camera pan/shake in a full shot. Then they used a 3D animation of the ball to make the hit, (notice where it lands) then cut away and finally action is resumed stunt over. Edit: they seem to have also used a soft wipe per frame.

the striker is the forward position on a soccer pitch, typically in charge of leading the offense against a team. in that situation to stop the ball , jim should have jumped and bounced the ball off his chest but in that play nobody is really at fault- if anything phyllis shouldn't have been playing at all

Soccer is short for 'association football' to distinguish it from other kinds of football (i.e. games played on foot, rather than on horseback). So soccer, American football, Australian football, and rugby are all kinds of football. Although the term 'soccer' dropped out of favor for the British (because it had an upper class stigma), in America, Canada, and Australia we use the term soccer to distinguish it from the other kinds of football that we play.

It’s weird to keep defending Charles but I don’t think he’s as cold and authoritarian as you describe him here. In relation to Michael Scott, who let you get away with murder as long as you humored him, Mother Theresa was probably a stern “boss.” I’ve worked for plenty of bosses a million times meaner than Charles. Charles seemed no nonsense and expected the staff to just do their job, no more, no less. And If he’s not interested in being their friend, so what? That’s not what he’s being paid to do. How many of us really consider our bosses “friends?” But playing soccer with your staff is a pretty good way to lighten the mood and ease tension. As someone that plays soccer, Charles getting mad at Jim during the game is ridiculous. Any time we play pick up soccer with no real goal, we always have a rule of you have to either dribble the ball in or pass the ball in because it’s really hard to tell if the ball actually went in without a net. And also anyone that actually played soccer would try to use skills or moves to dribble around people to score, they would never ever just bomb it like that in a pick up game. It’s just really lame and honestly most people probably wouldn’t count it even if you scored. That’s how you get kicked out of the game. Love the show but that scene definitely pissed me off a bit haha

Yeah, no. I'm not a North American but I also do believe football is never going to be a thing there in the US. This may not surprise you, but here in Brazil is kind of a big deal. I can tell you it is a cringe on its on, at least for me, to see they play football in this episode. I've also heard from a few close friends that they feel the same. That's a small detail and a very specific one, even though The Office has a lot of brazilian fans. But it's not a show that gets everybody here. The language is an obstacule, because subtitles are not the best way into it because of puns and a lot of cultural and cultural pop humor. My fiancee, as an example, doesn't get The Office. She just doesn't. And for her, that has not much familiarity with foreign culture, and is used to a different kind of humor (and knows nothing of English language), it just doesn't translate. (Pun)

That "kick" was made by someone that has no idea how to kick a soccer ball. His form was terrible and even faking a kick a real player would have looked far less awkward with the technique.

Ok, born in England, raised American...and I have a son (The Boy) that played at an elite level of soccer all thru high school...so, in the vein of being American or British...or whatever, I’m declaring myself an expert...a little bit of research shows that the British invented the term soccer. Association Football vs American Football. The US dropped “American” while the British, in their fashion, had to make the name shorter and started shortening “Association”” to “Soccer”....which the US adapted...BUT, the rest of the world called it Futbal...so, the insecure British Folks, who thought themselves the master of the sport, converted the name...and the US said “F**k it, we already have a football, so it stays soccer. Even one of The Boys trainers ( they don’t call them coaches) said that they used to have a TV program in Manchester that used Soccer in the title...they just don’t want to admit are are petrified of even sounding anything like an American. AND, why is Charles kicking the ball so hard in such a confined space?? My theory is that he wanted to nail Jim, due to his dislike of him and kicked it as hard as he could. Of course, Jim reacted like he should and got out of the way. Then Charles, with Dwight’s help, didn’t want to look like a jerk and deflected the blame onto Jim. Plus, couldn’t Charles see how much sucking up these guys were doing. It’s obvious that thru their answers and movements, they don’t know a thing about game.
