Well, in a lot of cases, they get a sort of "spiritual immunity." For the crusades, for example, they were told that if they participated, then they would forgive all of their earthly sins. The saliva of a dog carries unpleasant possibilities for humans. 3. A dog needs to have a purpose/job in order to be fulfilled. If you need to have an animal captive and dependant on you, "I pity you".

i suspect, tring to give it a real world, rational context, is that those things were likely carriers of germs/disease back then. proper hygiene wasn't really a thing for a lot of nations back then, and dogs, especially feral dogs can be quite filthy, as is blood if you touch it and it's contaminated in some way. So I suspect, like the jewish prohibitions against things like pork (which if not properly cooked at a high enough temp, can make you very sick), is that these older cultures saw the health risks certain behaviors had, and tried to instill a warning against them. but all they had as a motivating tool was "it's sinful and pisses off the sky daddy" Touching foreigners (who don't ritually wash 5 times a day, and thus less likely to spread germs) is bad, touching dogs (who again, can be very filthy if they are wild dogs, or even pet animals back in the bronze age) is bad. Touching blood ( i mean it's a biohazard, SO many diseases can be transmitted through the blood), is bad. So it makes sense from a health perspective, but the problem is that it's morphed into just "These things are bad inherently, not just a health risk". All the other shit tied to it, the religiosity is complete garbage, but if it was initially set up as a health warning, it DOES make sense. that's the problem with old ways like that, from any culture. While there might have been a logical reason for it, they didn't KNOW the reason for it back then, and just attributed it to evil spirits and the like. And now the original meaning has been lost, and it's mutated into something more sinister.
