Is the stereotype of Swedish people being so healthy true? Head to my link to get 10 travel packs + a one-year supply of vitamin D3K2 free with your first order: drinkag1.com/keltie
I've been living in northern sweden for a few years now and spend lots of time in Stockholm which is constantly ranked in the top 10 for healthiest, happiest, and city with the best quality of life in the world. I also saw that one documentary that show Sweden is being hit less hard by the obesity epidemic that other countries are facing. So how do the citizens of Sweden capital Stockholm have it so much easier to live healthy lives, especially compared to us in North America. Lets explore it today!
We all know the stereotype of Swedish people being the most beautiful people on earth, we picture tall blonde athletic people. Now it's a big diverse country, HOWEVER I will say the stereotype lives up. After staying up late one night binging KZfaq documentary's I was watching one about obesity around the world and noticed that as obesity spread, it seemed to impact sweden less...which got me thinking. Amongst our more sedentary lives and constant fast food commercials, how has Sweden citizens managed to stay lean athletic and healthy? I've noticed a few difference between sweden and North America, and here's what I think is causing this. Enjoy!

I spent a month in Sweden when I came for a summer school. They gave us a month gym membership with a lots of classes. It ıs the reason why I started going to gym afterwards. I was walking to the classes and was eating a healthy bowl as lunch, it was cheapest and most accessible thing to eat. The student loft was so practable as well, I cooked a lot - which I haven’t done much in my dorm during the university. We partied almost every night during the month. I lost 5kg in that month without trying and spent the most peaceful month of my life. I missed it so much. No surprise that people happier and healtier there.

Stockholm is one of the places I'd consider moving to. I have a relative who lives in Berlin, Germany. When I visit her, I sometimes visit other European cities. The quality of life is like night and day compared to the United States. Their culture(s) is definitely focused on the well-being of people. The western world really needs to take note.

Stockholm is amazing, and one of the few places I'm thinking of relocating to at some point. Especially the work-life balance - you're expected to go to work between 8 and 10 AM and leave after 8 hours. And have a lunch _break_ not work while you eat. Also, the vacations are long and you are expected to take them. You won't be punished for taking time off to recollect and rest.

In regards to vacation, most Nordic countries it's actually legally required that employees take their vacations, as the employer can get serious legal trouble/fines if they don't. Most people get 4-5 weeks a year, and it's encouraged to take 3 weeks back to back in summer during June/July which is called "common vacation" or similarly named in each country.
@spanglelime
@spanglelime 4 ай бұрын
My fiance is always talking about how he has vacation time he has to use up for the year. You'd never find that in America, companies advertise PTO and paid vacation as a job benefit. I love knowing that I can see my fiance for weeks at a time when I visit bc he HAS to take time off and use it up for the year. His employer tells him he's GOT to take vacation time bc he hasn't used enough.

Actually by law you have a minimum of 5 weeks a year with a right to 4 weeks in a row during summer.

@@Luckygirlme111 Some even more + If you work for the state, city, county aso you get more days every year from 40. If you work in swedish military you have a minumum of 28 days (under 31) then 31 days and from 40 you get 35 days/7weeks.

Your video almost made me buy the flight tickets to Sweden immediately. Then I remembered I’m saving for mortgage. 😂 But as soon as I get some extra money I’m flying back to Sweden for sure. I spent a month in Lund and walked around Malmö a lot as well and I just fell in love. For good two months I was convinced my boyfriend and I would move there and I actually had been even looking into the local real estate market and picked a few apartments for us to move into. 😅 I’ve been to Stockholm, too, but somehow the southern Sweden was just it for me. Plus, I appreciated how close it was to Denmark. I come from Prague, Czechia and we do have some healthy habits common with Scandinavia but just the mentality of Scandinavian people blows me away every time I’m there. Thank you for reminding me!

Stockholm has easy accessibility to nearly any kind of sport. They have a sportspark in Ladugård which is packed with dog walkers, runners, skiers, football, frisbee golf etc. They also have a lot of family happenings which gets kids into sports and activity at a very young age. Also, next time you're in town you have to go try the walnut bun at Fabrique. And maybe one of Jafar's donuts on Drottningsgatan (phenomenal, freshly baked). 😻

Hi Keltie! About massage benefits from you emplyer in Sweden. Most people get about 3000 sek/year in "health benefit" and you can choose what to do with that money, tho what you choose must be on the ok list. You can choose to buy massage or a gym membership, PT-hours, classes at a yoga shala, runningshoes, a laughing class aso. the last few years also tickets to the theater since cultural experiences is also concidered as health beneficial. My partner allways choose to put his money to classic swedish massage and gets about 5 sessions a year "for free" . As a freelancer I don´t get any health benefits from work...

To add onto the sidewalks (which, btw, rarely end in some nonsensical way), the city is very well lit. Something one can take for granted until you visit a city like, say, Strasbourg, which seems to half light or even barely bother to light many of their streets including the main ones. And with holidays, your employer by law (unless you have a collective agreement that says otherwise) has to let you take 4 weeks off in a row during June through August.

They explained also that every office has to comply with rules stipulating how much light there should be (a lot) and sitting positions, chairs desks, everything was tip top. And standing desks ( this was in 2003 when they weren’t a thing yet). It’s only recently I understand why they all stood up after lunch. Seriously healthy place. Maybe it’s where I live but we have gyms really nice like that in the USA too (I live in Florida) and the prices are super reasonable. I pay about 35$/month for a great one. I love the amount of walking and nature there! Gorgeous

The north of Spain (and Spain in general) has one of the greatest life expectancies in the world, competing with Japan. The way of living in the little town in the north is amazing! You should visit it if you can

Man ,the work culture in the U.S. needs to step up. Or maybe a better phrase is chill out and shift gears. Rest really is vital for us as people but we're discouraged from it for the sake of being/seeming productive. For all the advances we're making in society, you'd think we'd take after Stockholm's example by now. Maybe some states are, but I don't know. Anyway, great video, Keltie!

I literally just commented the same thing! The work/life balance here is 💩. If you're sick they still expect you to come in. Most places make you feel guilty for taking a vacation YOU EARNED. If I was able to move to Sweden I'd be on the next flight 😂

I hope it does eventually change! Much better to give employees time to recover and relax so they can perform 100%… vs people working non stop for “productivity” when they’re all zombies at 50% 🥲

I love your healthy habits in Sweeden videos and gotta say that many of these things are probably common in Europe in general (except the vaping thing😂). I went to Copenhagen once and I loved it, I'm looking forward to visit Sweeden someday

Two duvets are also common in Germany. Having had to share I'm so happy this is a thing where I come from. I've always had my partners hog the duvet leaving me cold.

13:25 lmao 😂> Best thing about snus in my opinion is that it doesn't disturb anyone. I remember back in the 90s in copenhagen, everyone smoking inside fast food restaurants and stuff, it was really something else.

I opted for separate blankets for me and my partner because SOMEONE (him) is a blanket hog and I needed sleep more than I needed a "neat" looking bed. lol. I highly recommend. But I might opt for two twin sized duvets so I can actually make the bed and make it look neater. Someday. But for now, we just both have our own regular sized blanket/duvet on a king sized bed. haha

Living in Sydney we have alot of what Sweden/Stockholm has (healthcare safety net, loads of gyms, city parks and greenspaces and an amazing range of healthy food from everywhere in the world) but we also have hot summers, no snow and the best city beaches. Maybe visit us if you feel lie a beachy holiday one day xx
