Since I was young I had this vision of LA, people playing beach volleyball, running on the board walk, and drinking smoothies. I've spent the last few years travelling down to LA and spending long periods of time there. Also making friends that were born or moved to LA. We got to gather to discover how despite the world becoming more sedentary and easier access to fast food, LA still seems to be wellness obsessed. BUT is it all really that healthy here, or is that the paradox of social media & television. This is the LA we see. Is it a healthy lifestyle, or obsession.

Determining the "healthiest" city in the USA can be complex and subjective as it depends on various factors and criteria. Health can be assessed through different dimensions, including physical health, mental health, healthcare access, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices. Additionally, rankings and assessments can change over time. Several organizations and publications release annual lists of healthy cities based on various criteria. Some cities that have frequently ranked high in terms of overall health and wellness in the past include: 1. Boulder, Colorado: Boulder is known for its active lifestyle, access to outdoor activities, and a focus on wellness. As someone who lived and worked in Boulder, Colorado, for six years, I can attest to its status as one of the healthiest cities in the USA. The city's dedication to promoting a healthy lifestyle is evident everywhere. From the extensive network of hiking and biking trails in the stunning Rocky Mountains to the plethora of organic and locally sourced food options, Boulder provides an environment that encourages physical well-being and healthy eating habits. Moreover, Boulder's strong sense of community and emphasis on mental health, with numerous yoga studios, mindfulness programs, and mental health support resources, contribute to overall well-being. Access to healthcare services is also exceptional in Boulder, ensuring residents have the necessary medical support. While different cities may excel in specific health-related aspects, Boulder's combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, health-conscious culture, and access to healthcare makes it a compelling choice for those seeking a healthy and balanced lifestyle. 2. San Francisco, California: San Francisco strongly emphasizes healthcare access, fitness, and a relatively healthy lifestyle. 3. Seattle, Washington: Seattle is known for its commitment to health, fitness, and access to healthcare services. 4. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Minneapolis is often praised for its parks, recreational opportunities, and healthcare system. 5. Denver, Colorado: Denver offers outdoor recreational activities, a healthy job market, and healthcare services. It's important to note that these rankings can change, and the perception of a "healthy" city can vary depending on individual preferences and priorities. Moreover, different organizations may use different methodologies to assess the health of cities, so the rankings can differ. Ultimately, the healthiest city in the USA for an individual may depend on their specific health needs, lifestyle preferences, and what aspects of health are most important to them, whether it's clean air, access to healthcare, recreational opportunities, or other factors. Individuals should research and consider their priorities when evaluating which city aligns best with their health and wellness goals.

Definitely consider checking out Denver and Boulder Colorado (they are 35 mins away from each other). I think what makes Colorado so famously “healthy” is the access to so many active things - skiing, biking, hiking, climbing, running, yoga. Plus, there are a lot of wealthy young people in Colorado, especially Boulder. More wealth = more disposable income for healthy sh*t. I think I saw somewhere Denver is Classpass’s most popular city ?

Hey there! You're absolutely right; living and working in Boulder, Colorado, for six years gave me a firsthand experience of what makes this place so famously 'healthy.' The proximity of Boulder to Denver, just a short 35-minute drive away, is one of the fantastic aspects of the region. Colorado's lifestyle is all about staying active and enjoying the outdoors. With easy access to activities like skiing, biking, hiking, climbing, running, and yoga, it's no wonder people here are so health-conscious. The beautiful Rocky Mountains provide a stunning backdrop for these activities, making staying motivated and enjoying a healthy lifestyle easy. I noticed that you also mentioned the wealth factor, especially in Boulder. There are many young, affluent individuals here, which often translates into more disposable income for pursuing healthy habits. Whether it's investing in organic and locally sourced foods or memberships to fitness studios and wellness programs, the financial resources in the area contribute to a thriving health and wellness culture. Interestingly, you mentioned Denver being ClassPass's most famous city. That's a testament to the region's vibrant fitness and wellness scene. Denver offers much, from its diverse fitness studios to wellness events and health-conscious communities. Living in this part of Colorado offers a unique blend of natural beauty, active lifestyle choices, and a supportive community that truly makes it a hub for health and well-being. If anyone is considering exploring this area, I'd highly recommend checking out both Denver and Boulder - you'll find many opportunities to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. 🏔💪😊

Seriously, the first time I visited Denver as an adult I had that bit from Garrison Keillor pop into my head: “where all the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the children above average” (except whatever the healthy version of that would be) because I couldn’t get over the lack of obese people. I mean, I know they exist there - just in fewer numbers than other US cities.

I saw the same thing when I drove through Colorado a couple of years ago. It was especially dramatic in Vail, where people were not only fit, they were also rich. One interesting exception was Grand Junction, Colorado. In that city the ratio of overweight people was pretty close to the national average, but the shape of the curve was different: There were more obese people, balanced by more super-fit people. A friend told me later that it was because Grand Junction was an ice-climbing mecca, so the astonishing number of super-fit people were because of all those ice-climbers.

LA is a place where people are more obsessed with “looking healthy” than actually being healthy. Wellness culture is a status symbol. You also find a lot of people that won’t drink because of the calories or for “health reasons” but then do a ton a drugs. I love the ability to find healthy restaurants and how receptive people are to food intolerances, but it’s a weird place. (Will caveat that the ability to get locally sourced produce from the CA Central Valley is amazing)

i think what makes LA a uniquely unhealthy big coastal city in the US is how little everyone walks. it’s mind boggling as a new yorker.
@jenme2390
@jenme2390 10 ай бұрын
I’ve actually walked more in Southern California than I ever have in my life.😂They have so many beautiful trails specifically to provide opportunities for people to be active whereas like on the East Coast where I am from that land would probably be used for more fast food meccas. The weather is pleasant here year round basically whereas in most other states a large portion of the year is just NOT liveable outdoors.
@morgan3llis001
@morgan3llis001 10 ай бұрын
@@jenme2390 Yeah for sure, it's definitely relative. But I think what you said is just it, you walk as exercise, whereas in new yo,rk you just casually walk 4 miles a day out living your life. Then on top of that, you might say, walk the Prospect Park loop to intentionally go for a walk (which is like 3.5 miles).
@jenme2390
@jenme2390 10 ай бұрын
@@morgan3llis001 First of all, when I first moved to LA I lived off of Olympic and Highland and simply because it is annoying to find parking OR things were close enough, I in fact walked. I don’t know why you all assume people in LA just don’t walk to go somewhere. We actually also HATE moving our cars and having to find parking where we are going sometimes even if we have one. 2. WHY you walk is really irrelevant as long as you walk and the amount.🤷🏾‍♀️On Saturdays and Sundays, days when lots of the country just stays home and chills, I also see all types of people walking to and through farmers markets which is miles away. You also have outdoor festivals of all types where people come from all over the world. And like I said I highly doubt people in other states are as vigilant about being active outside when it feels like the Antarctic or the Sahara outside. People in LA have significant motivation to be out year round. People in LA are just steeped in a more health conscious culture whether they like it or not. From my understanding of what the majority of what happens in New York….city specifically. It’s get on the subway to get to your job, then sit for 8 hours, not interacting with the most cordial individuals and in between that not eating the most healthy food throughout the day. I have family in Rochester, NY by the way and from an early age they are walking…..to the corner store for chips and candy and sodas. BUT I would also say walking is literally just one of the many ways people move in LA. Furthermore I literally just went to the CDC website and New York City in fact has atrocious obesity rates and levels of tobacco use and dangerously low levels of physical activity including among children. Sooooo I think this idea of New York as a better health Mecca is actually fictitious. Literally the data says it.🤷🏾‍♀️
@morgan3llis001
@morgan3llis001 10 ай бұрын
@@jenme2390 Never said that New York was "healthier" than LA. Just that NYC is more set up like European cities in that people walk places to do their errands. Costal US cities (including LA) are generally more walkable than non-coastal cities (though obviously I'm overgeneralizing) because they're more dense. NYC is exceptionally dense. Every New Yorker that moves LA is shocked by how often people drive, and usually its out of necessity. Another big reason, besides density, that everyone walks in NYC is because we have good (for the US) public transit. Again, same reason Europeans walk more. That commute to work you just talked about is true but it also usually requires a lot of walking! Both to and from the subway, and sometimes between train lines. My commute to work alone gets me to walk 2 miles every day, and that's with standing (I wish it was sitting) on the subway for 45 min. Let alone if I do any socializing after work, which I usually do. NYC is also just a really social city, people don't spend much time in their homes. The intentional vs non intentional walking is important because if people have to carve out parts of their day to walk, they're less likely to do it. (Also Rochester is extremely different than NYC, more like a typical American city. I wouldn't be surprised if LA was more walkable.) I wish more American cities had good public transit so people could more easily get their steps in.
@jenme2390
@jenme2390 10 ай бұрын
@@morgan3llis001 So I know about the walking to and from the subway thing, some people having longer walks than others. But not only is this intentional and nonintentional walking thing less important than it is being made out to be in terms of outcomes but in fact LA folks do a lot more “unintentional” walking than I think you are giving them credit for. Literally so many areas of LA are vastly different from one another. Would you probably have to take a car to get from like Hollywood to Santa Monica? Probably. But then when you get there it wouldn’t be a shocker if you are out walking and moving like all day. Well it’s good that you are not saying New York City is healthier because as I read this data more they are in fact not despite all this more walking that it is being claimed that they do with way worse statistics than Los Angeles, unfortunately. “New York City, New York, is tackling obesity and tobacco use throughout the community of 8.4 million residents. More than half (57%) of the adults in New York City are overweight or obese, and 27.3% of adults reported no regular physical activity in the past 30 days. Further, approximately 39% of New York City Public School children in kindergarten through eighth grade are overweight or obese, compared to 35.5% of children aged 6-11 nationally.” How much you walk in LA to do errands or otherwise is going to vary. I know some people who rarely move their car and are always walking. On average, these statistics seem to indicate that despite the amount of people in New York City who walk there are still a large proportion who don’t or don’t do that much. So is it really that different from LA or the rest of the country in that aspect, I don’t really think so. If it was I don’t think their health statistics would still be some of the worst in the country.🤷🏾‍♀️

This is so interesting, Keltie. Looking forward to this series. Oftentimes cities are often cited as being healthy - ones with good infrastructure, that is :) I think part of this is the easier access to a wide variety of foods & the amount of exercise you get on a day to day basis. In a lot of cities around the world, you walk everywhere - to the grocery store, to work, even to the bus stop or subway station. There are stairs you have to climb to get to those places & not every building has an elevator. Naturally, access to good healthcare - physical & mental, good social networks, community & a society & culture that support all of those things are factors too. All of that contributes to the overall health of a population. I think that's why places like Italy & Japan are often cited has the healthiest in the world where the people often live very long, thriving lives.

I love this!! La Vibes gives such a health mindset approach... but when you take off the rose-colored glasses there are so many economic differences between the ultra-rich, homelessness, mental health, and drug addiction. Love La but everyone seems to be in a cult of some sort throughout the city. I think Oregon or some random east coast small town might be actually the healthiest. I'd say cities with more income equality are better suited to be "healthy" as they have more access to everything that can help them.

I lived in Arcata, CA for a couple years and it seemed pretty healthy to me ! You're surrounded by nature and that made it very accessible to hiking whenever you wanted. The local grocery stores had lots of options. Their farmers market actually had products from local farms: beef, fish, oysters, & veggies! Most of the restaurants almost always had options for non-meat dishes. I was a college student( low on money) at the time so some of these options were not accessible to me for daily living & the city is located in slightly remote area of North California but the limited access to fast food made me feel healthier than living in a bigger city.

I live near Baltimore, MD and it really depends on where you go to find healthy food. For example, parts of the city are so poor that you'll only find fast food chains. Then there is Canton (which is in the city).and they have high end restaurants, gyms, spas, etc. If you go places in Maryland like Rockville, Bethesda and Frederick, you'll find more healthy/ organic restaurants, gyms, etc. You just have to explore 😊

If you come to CO the most health obsessed towns are on the western slope where the outdoor activities are more popular. Ridgeway, Aspen, Telluride, and Ouray. Those places are also heavily populated with rich people who demand that. But Ridgeway is smaller lesser known place that combines “small towny” with “healthy living”

Hoboken, NJ - we have one of the highest concentrations of fitness studios per capita, tons of healthy food options, health food stores, alternative medicine practitioners, and its an extremely walkable city! Everyone here is health centered, especially if you go to the waterfront around 7am - soooo many people out for a walk/run or playing sports on the fields

Wow, Keltie! This video actually makes me want to visit LA (East Coast resi over here). You really painted a stunning picture of it over there! I’ve put LA (and CA in general) at the bottom of my list due to a myriad of issues there (including smog & wildfires), but you have reignited a curiosity! Thank you! How was the air quality, btw? Regarding your sign, I have been subscribed to you for years now, so I know you are a Cancer 🤣 Regarding the healthiest city in the US, Arlington, VA should still be holding that title. They have extremely low rates of smoking, high walkability in their neighborhoods, and a love for fitness (probably more gyms and studios than Starbucks 😂😂). I can’t wait to see your experience there!

I think about that sometimes- like would I actually be more healthy if it was more readily available? Boston is pretty decent though, and I live right near a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s so that makes it easier when grocery shopping! Dark cold weather is def my biggest issue here. Loved the video, and would love to see how the Tracy Anderson workout went! I got her Metamorphosis program back in the day! 😂

I believe one of the healthiest cities in the USA (can’t speak for NA) is actually on the other side of the country in Arlington, VA. I believe Will Tennyson did a video about this. NoVA is more about keeping an active lifestyle and is extremely walkable less about juice cleanses.

This is going to be controversial, but I don't think the LA health scene is anything to aspire to (despite everything you see on TV or social media). Yes, you can get unusual ingredients like sea moss, but that's just a trend. You don't need it. Just eat a variety of fruits and veggies. Yes, you can go for hikes, but it's in terrible smog-laden air. The air you're in right now might be cleaner so just go outside and enjoy it. Yes, you have all types of vegan food, but a lot of that stuff is highly processed to make it have the properties of non-vegan food. You don't need açai bowls or sea moss or whatever the next trend will be. The older I get, the more I realize all these superfoods and supplements are mostly just great marketing.

regarding diet snacks - it's really great when you're craving something but you don't have 500-700 calories to spare on a snack. but also it's not something our diet should exclusively consist of. sometimes you just want a junk-y real version and that's ok! i think for diet snacks/drinks, it's the same as everything else. all good as long as it's in moderation😊

I agree, Los Angeles has A LOT of juice bars (but they're so expensive!!). I did some research and a lot of the internet says that San Fransisco and Oakland are the healthiest cities. Coming from that area, I highly disagree with that. A few other sites do say Los Angeles and Irvine (the city I live in). I really wonder what standards they grade them off of. Thanks for the video!

Yes I find this SO fascinating! Because the. Averages of the stats can skew things so much. A city like LA is a great example, it probably had the healthiest and least healthiest people all in the same area = average rating, but that stat doesn’t really explain it. Then there’s city with more income equality, that aren’t necessarily focused on “health” but they have less poverty = healthier. Excited to dive more into this and get a real picture :)

I mean, I want to say it's Austin, TX since I live here, BUT considering what you said in this video and my experience in a few cities, I want to say Seattle, WA? They have the integrated hiking-in-the-city vibe, healthy food options, and omg the streams of bikers you see flooding from the ferries at rush hour are kinda terrifying. It's grey there, but honestly that just makes me want to be outside more since the weather is actually kinda moderate and not trying to murder you for the majority of the year.
