Both of my parents are from the Dominican Republic. I am 45%African, 40%European, 8%West Asia, 7%Native American. There are tens of millions of "hispanics" with your same exact DNA percentages!!! So your grandmother could have definitely been "hispanic". Hispanic or latino is not a race. You can be 100% African and be "hispanic" or "latino".

thank you. I was just going to say that. Hispanic or Latin isn't a race. its a euro-African blend. no matter if its 99% African and 1%European or vice versa. so she was probably right in stating you're latina. technically black Americans with at least 6% European can identify as Latino or creole. its just a subname for a blend.

Wow, so my 21% Percent European DNA could still be Latina, In some way, shape or form. My father is definitely getting the test done soon because he swears up and down that he is Spanish. He told me yesterday, "You might not be Spanish but I AM." LOL

My results are 66% African, 32% European, 1% Native American and 1% Polynesian. I was surprised to find that most of my Euro ancestry is British instead of Spanish or Portuguese (it's still there but not as much as I thought). It doesn't change my Afro-Hispanic identity though. But it does give me something else to add to the mix which is pretty cool :)

Just because you speak Spanish or you have a Spanish accent does not mean you are from Spain. She could have been from Guatemala or Nicaragua who have many Spanish speaking black people who would also have European DNA because of the mixing of the races. Her mother could have been Dominican. Again, very strong African ties and they speak Spanish. Some things will be very difficult to discern. Also, we all know that we black people will call anybody with a Spanish accent, Spanish or Mexican unless they have identified themselves has Puerto Rican, which her mother could have been as well and still passed on African and European DNA. I hope she is able to find out more and even connect with her blood relatives.

PatsBooks All human classification systems were created to dehumanize African people. Just by reading the posts, many people seem to think there are human races. Yet the DNA ancestry tests simply test for ancestry. Nothing more and nothing less. African people are the most genetically distinct human beings on earth, yet why are people still lumping them together as a "race"?
@001islandprincess
@001islandprincess 7 жыл бұрын
PatsBooks Furthermore, "races" in the modern sense of the word, were created by the white supremacists (aka Western European enslavers) to dehumanize Africans and indigenous people. Therefore, like "hispanic", "race" (along with "white", "black", "pardo", "mestizo") are all socio-political terms masquerading as something inherent or biological. These groups of people within their so called "racial" grouping as genetically diverse.

Latino/Hispanic doesn't mean anything really. Those terms were no existence in the 1960s. No one call them self's that back then. My father is a white boy as he was listed as white no Hispanic since he was born before the 70s, his grandparents were born in Guayama. My 2nd great grandfather from Arroyo was listed as Blanco. Hispanic/Latino didn't start showing up on as a category on the U.S census until the 70s when Richard Nixon was in office as the census was very different back then. I don't even call myself Hispanic or even check that box. Its just a dumb label that the U.S government created. No one in Latin America used those terms.

Hispanic is an ethnic descriptive that has been recently changed to accurately fit who was intended for. Hispanics can be black and can also be white. Think of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans vs South Americans or Mexicans. So it could be that your grandmother was Hispanic, but of African origins, which would explain why it didn't show up on the DNA test.

Technically Hispanic/Latino doesn't mean anything. it's just a label created by the government. Back in the the 1940s and 1960s the Hispanic and Latino terms were non existent as both my father and his dad were listed as White. it was the norm for Puerto Ricans to be listed as "White" back then as the Hispanic category didn't start showing up on the census until the 1970s. There was no such thing as Hispanic back in thier days. And my father looks 100% Scandinavian a blonde blue eye with the last name Ortiz. My fathers paternal grandparents were born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico before migrating over to Manhattan, NY. i don't use those labels nor call myself Hispanic.

Michelle, you child, you believe what you wrote, proving, you have either zero education or you have been filled with non-sense via social science courses. You can find this online, but using the same progressive matrix IQ indicators -Japanese college students come in around 115, Nigerian college students around 63, so own it. Sociology would have you believe there is only one race, but anthropologists can glance at a set of bones and reveal an Asian (skull or femur) , a Negroid (skull) , or caucasian. Sorry I don't have time to fully educate you. p.s. please research the terms "hispanic" and "latino"....these are artificial terms created by the US census. Also, if you took the Ancestry DNA, you may then know, they claim only a 50 percent confidence in their results.

Hi LaVinnia - There was a Colonial Era wave of Irish immigration to Cuba and Puerto Rico (And possibly other Latino/Caribbean countries). I notice that some Cubans and Puerto Ricans have Irish surnames. Not all Afro-Hispanics/Afro-Spaniards have Iberian ancestry. Also, it's possible that the test is not picking up Iberian ancestry that you've inherited. Going by your test, you're only getting information from maternal lineages (both maternal-maternal and paternal-maternal). So, if your grandmother's father, for example, has the Iberian ancestry, and if you took an mtDNA test, it won't show up. Have you asked your father to take a test?

First of all, when you say Spanish, it only indicates the language and cultures. It has nothing to do with race. People that are from Spain are called " Spaniard".Hispanic people are not Spaniard unless they can at least legitimately prove that either of their parents is Spaniard that is European.Hispanic are highly hybrid folks in terms of their various genetic makeup (predominantly Native Indians and Africans).Most of them don't even possess much of Spaniard blood. So there is obviously a big difference there. We are talking about some difference here. Therefore, technically in order for you to even claim that you are part of Spaniard , you have to possess a significant amount of blood from Iberia Peninsula which you do not.

it's important to remember with these results that it only tests the DNA you inherited. it's possible the "Hispanic" (native American/Iberian peninsula) just didn't get passed down to you. for example, if your mom was 50% Irish and %50 French, you wouldn't necessarily get 25% of each. it's random. it's possible that you could receive all Irish from your mom and no French. unlikely, but possible. so in your example, your parents could have just not passed the native American/Iberian DNA to you. this is why it's good to get other people in your family tested. they could have inherited things you didn't. hope this helps.

There are people who live in Latin American countries that did not immigrate from Spain. Some Latinos aren't of Spanish Ancestry at all, some are Italian, some are English and some are French. In fact some are more African that Spanish.

one thing this girl has to realize, is during the transatlantic slave trade, africans were not just transported to the states, but throughout the americas.she mentioned an orphanage in miami where there is an overwhelmingly large cuban population. a thing about cuba is there especially africans were taken to, and if you listen to cuban music such as the famous singer celia cruz, the african influence is extremely present. i would think this girls grandma is from cuba or somewhere else in the carribean

i, like your father, was adopted. Found out at age of 9, and was committed to finding my ancestry. Got lucky, and got a birth certificate with parents names. From the 1940 census, got a lot of information to track my family back to Boston, and Virginia. It wasn't till i did a dna test, that my European history really fell in place. The thing about blacks, and European history is most slave owners, were not poor, and they were relatives of European nobility. Our European mix are very similar, so you should try to find the connection. I got lucky with a white relative, from dna matching, had a full American tree, which made it easy for me to fill in the European history. My European circles, matches what i am finding with white relatives. Finding black relatives constantly hit dead-ends because few records exists before 1870 census. But i was lucky, again, with a black family i have known my whole life, being related (4th cousins),... never knew... Good luck with your tree, and liked your story. On ancestry, i am pghjack(McNeal tree)... if you would like to check out my tree, or dna profile( if u have access)... Jack

You have two parents so the test pulled your dna from both of your parents just because the Hispanic dna didn't show in your test doesn't mean that your real grandmother wasn't Hispanic all it means is those Hispanic genes didn't get passed down to you. Maybe your father should take the test to if he have any Hispanic genes since that was supposed to be his mom, if he takes the test and Hispanic genes show up then, most likely your grandmother was Hispanic, if Hispanic genes don't show up in his test then, there is a question.

The Hispanic ethnicity isn't a genetically uniform ethnicity. Hispanic literally means 'Spanish-speaking'. Most Hispanics are primarily of Indigenous American and European descent with smaller quantities of African ancestry.

it is always confusing to non-hispanics , especially whites-americans and african-americans they think Latino is a race and it is not a race, it is a culture. Your dad's mother could have indeed been Hispanic of British ancestry. While many Latinos indeed have even a drop of African we definietely on average are half white and many from south america around 60-100% European. In Argentina, Uruguay and Cuba a lot of the white hispanics do not have spanish european ties they come from families that immigrated to Latin America from England, Germany , Russia and Italy. Many white cubans have Russian blood in them. So yes, your dad's mother might have been culturally Latina but not racially Spanish-European. I hope that makes sense to you. Perfect example: Alexis Bledel from gilmore girls, fully Latina, first language was Spanish , her mom born in Mexico and her dad born in Argentina, both parents are European whites from Latin European countries. Shes like genetically speaking British like your white side.

OMG but wait! - I just also remembered something. Another possible scenario in your case is that assuming the hispanic side is on your dad side it wouldnt show on your DNA! Your DNA results onky reflect female side not your male side of the family. So a brother or your dad himself can take the test to show the half that doesnt show on your results. Doesnt this have to do because women dont have some chromosome.

The results were a little weird to me, not gonna lie. Only weird because I thought there would be some DNA that would go along with the story that my grandmother told me and there wasn't any. But, like many has stated, being Hispanic is an ethnicity and not a race. Even being college educated, we in America can forget that. I know several "BLACK" woman who identify as being Hispanic but they definitely look AFRICAN! They identify because maybe they were born in a Spanish speaking region, grown up in the culture and have engaged in it since childhood. Parents may have also been born there as well as grandparents, so they surely identify as their culture being Hispanic. I totally get that! That is the only reason I was some what confused, just because of the lack of DNA my test showed of me having any DNA from a Spanish speaking country. However, my father will also be taking a test soon and Ill definitely let you all know how his turned out. I know it is very possible that my grandmother was still correct and I still believe she was, because like many have stated, being Hispanic is NOT a race, its an ethnicity, Its a culture, not a specific race. I am just Thankful to have done the test. and Yes, I definitely would love to track my father's family!

Hi There! You should also try Gedmatch and DNA.Land, as they are both free and you may get results that show your (Spain/Portugal) heritage. This happened to me similarly. My mom's mother always said that her mother was part Portuguese. However, when I took AncestryDNA, it didn't show for me in my results. I also had my mother tested, and she showed only 1% of Iberian ancestry. However, when I took both of our results, and uploaded the raw data to Gedmatch and DNA.land, we both showed results from (Spain/ Portugal). I had 5.4%, while my mother had 10%. We are both African Americans with mixed heritage. All three tests had me in the range of 79 to 81% African, and my mom 70 to 76% African, with the remaining being for both European, Asian, and Middle Eastern. Gedmatch was the only test that showed our less than one percent Native American ancestry. So I would recommend for you to try both Gedmatch and DNALand, and see if they show those results! They are both free! Good Luck.

+LaVinnia Sheree Family you probably won't read this, but look at other dna tests latinos have taken. it's very common for latinos to have a high percent of "European" blood, mixed with native American and some (usually deeper in the south) have a bit more African blood. Think back to history class, the spanish conquering Aztec land, bringing slaves to America. it wasn't just here in the U.S, people tend to forget the genocide of all natives of all American. I haven't taken a test, both my parents are Mexican, but it wouldn't surprise me if I have a 1-2% African in me and the rest native American plus European.

Hispanics are White they come from or originate from Spain which use to be called Hispania and now is called Espana. It sounds the same just spelled different. I think the people you are talking about are from the Caribbean region of the Hispanic Caribbean and most people from their do have African ancestry because of the Atlantic slave trade many of the islands like Hispaniola now Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto rico had to import slaves after disease and conflict wiped out the Native Indigenous populations of those islands. I like to call them Caribbean people or Caribbean Hispanics because they are from a region with a similar history. A lot of people think they are from Latin America but they are not. Puerto Rico is a U.S territory in the Caribbean like the U.S Virgin islands. Cuba turned its back on Latin America and became a communist country and caused a lot of harm to Latin America by supporting Leftist communist groups that terrorized Central and South America for many decades. Dominican Republic shares half an island with Haiti and all these islands are in the same region with Jamaica and other Caribbean islands and share basically the same history. A Puerto rican or Dominican saying he is Spanish is like a Haitian say he is French. They are not while they may have some ancestry from these people they basically are very different.

Just for clarification for the girl in the video AND people in the comments section: the words latino and hispanic do not relate to any particular genetic configuration (even though MANY 'latinos' and 'hispanic' people in the USA tend to be brown, bc a great majority of them are mestizos with roots in mexico and mesoamerica etc (mestizo: mixture between european and indigenous, plus sometimes african ancestry) hispanic means "spanish-speaking" latino (at least in the USA) means ANYONE with roots in Latin America. fyi, people from latin america may be indigenous (native), european, african, asian, pacific-islander etc etc. or any combination thereof. it's possible the girl in the video is indeed "latina". maybe one/some of her ancestors lived for some generations in latin america (panama,dom. republic etc) and likely have african ancestry (or even perhaps british isles)

A lot of Caribbean Blacks came through Miami. Your Paternal ancestor may have come from the British parts of the Caribbean and then moved to one of the Latino parts of the Caribbean. Some of the people in Panama descend from Jamaicans that were used to help build the canal. Latin America has a lot of interrelated history with the Caribbean. There are enclaves in various Central American countries where the descendants came from British West Indian islands.

Many people forget there is a word called.migration. In the early 1900s many black people moved from the Caribbean to Panama and Costa Rico. Here is my thought: Your grandmother may have known more than she shared. Guyana is a former British colony with a predominately African and South Asian population as you may already know. However, a large portion of the Guyanese black population came from Barbados. I am not at all surprised by your results. As time go by and more people take the test relatives will pop up. My dad is adopted too. I didn't read all the comments, so if somebody has already mentioned this, let me reiterate. In ancestry DNA tests, Latin American and/or Hispanic people don't get "Hispanic" or "Latin" or even "Spain". The results would say "Native American" and "African" and "European (mostly Iberian peninsula, i.e. Portugal and Spain)" and some other hodge podge of places (our ancestors be roaming and procreatin'). Factor in that Iberia is right next to Morocco, and North West Africa was a Spanish, French AND BRITISH ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ protectorate. So, a lot of back and forth migration happened there in the old days. And Spanish is still a spoken language in those African territories. And those individuals are therefore, Hispanic, because Spanish is the language they speak. Even though Equatorial Guinea is the only country in the African continent with Spanish as its official language, there's was still some Spanish spoken in Senegal and Mali and that old north western territory as a lingua franca, needed for trade. I could use the example of the German and Spanish spoken in the American Southwest and Pennsylvania, or French spoken in Ottowa Canada, which, borders Montreal. It just helps you get by, day to day, if you speak it. And if you learned it growing up, you just speak it. The ancestral language could also function as item of self-identity. So again, those tests never ever say Spanish or Latin or Hispanic. Even Spanish and Portuguese natives whose family haven't left the Iberia for the new world get "Iberia" and "Africa" because of the proximity in regions and the roamin' and procreatin'. And the tests locate the region of provenance of your progenitors. They just give you regions, not nationalities. They might provide ethnic groups, when ethnic groups are defined by region. And "Hispanic" is a pretty confusing ethnic group which is not defined by either region or nationality. But rather, the question "Were your ancestors Portuguese or Spanish or somehow f**ed by the Spanish or Portuguese? If the answer is "sim" then "Bienvenido al club". I won't go into more detail and start sounding like a dissertation. I already majored in Hispanic studies. lol. So your paternal Grandmother could still be Hispanic, even if not in the most typical way. If she spoke Spanish then, she WAS Hispanic or "Spanish". As, that's a term used in the west coast, still today ,to mean anything from PR to EG. Ex. Few residents of old Spanish Harlem were actually Spanish. By today's definition, they were Hispanic. But, the term stuck arround because West Coast. I'd reach out to the unknown relatives who have also taken the test and get some clarity (if that company provided their profile). If not, I'd take a second test with a different company who does connect related test takers. Some ancestry DNA tests are pretty lazy and vague and raise more questions than answers and leave you thinking "this is wrong". And others are more detailed and have a bigger user database, which means MOAHR relatives to get a hold of!!! Side note: a more expensive DNA test doesn't mean it's better or more detailed. I'd go on user ratings to pick the better ones.

Yes there are a lot of Hispanic people that have sub-saharian african but if she had some hispanic blood , some percentage will show as being either from Iberia, Italy/Greece. That is the composition of native spaniards usually someone native form the iberian peninsula will show at a maximum 51% if she had some some great grandparent it will show up to perhaps at least 2% to 5% from one of those places

Yes! That is what I was looking for and this is what I was confused about. The fact that my DNA showed none of these places, maybe I should not have used the term "Hispanic."

I have noticed with a lot of Dominicans and Latin results on here, they are like in the 50-70 percent range for European so you grandmother was correct about your paternal grandmother. It was shocking to me as well, to see that their results were over half European with like African and Native mixed in. Those people were also shocked as they thought they were more Black than anything.
