When I started investing last year, I avoided significant mistakes. I've focused on investing modest sums in stable businesses for the long term. If stocks perform well, I hold onto them; otherwise, I reinvest losses into profits. Recently, I made $9.5k from a $4k investment in NVIDIA.

Exactly, a good number of people discredit the effectiveness of financial advisor, but over the past 10years, I’ve had a financial advisor consistently restructure and diversify my portfolio/expenses and I’ve made over $3million in gains… might not be a lot but i'm financially secure and that's fine by me.

I've been playing around with dividend income for about 15 years at the moment this is what I have [I'm always thinking about change]: 10% Emerging Markets [NEWFX], 30% Large Caps [ACAAX, AGTHX, AIVSX, JBGCX], 4% Small Caps [FRVFX], 12% Foreign [CAIBX, ANWPX, AEPGX], 8% Mixed Target [FCISX, BALCX], 7% REITs [IRM, VTR, WPC, VNQ], and 7% Bond Funds [PONAX, FHIIX, + 2 old bonds when int rates were at 7%]; then 11% pharma stocks [ABBV, JNJ] + 4% energy stocks [COP] + 3% a money stock [GIM].

Thanks Jimmy - seems like a winning & safe cash flow here. With all the stock buybacks it feels good to reward funds and the companies providing regular large dividends with our investments. And certainly stock appreciation should follow as a result. I hope more people follow this trend so companies that favor buybacks over dividends get the message. Unless you can time a sale after a buyback - the stock appreciation is often short-lived - and usually it's the insiders selling not the ETF's. The buy and hold investors are getting screwed by stock-buybacks for the most part. Go dividend stock buyers!

There's a lot of research out there to show that investors tend to be more highly rewarded by pursuing a total return approach to investing rather than being a yield or dividend hunter. Consider that the rate of dividend paying companies over the past few decades has halved and more companies are electing to return value to shareholders through stock buy-backs. By neglecting this portion of the market (estimated to be roughly 65-70% of equities in the market) means you are effectively going to miss out on investments with statistically significant characteristics that lead to higher expected returns (factors such as companies with robust earnings, conservative investment policies and have value investment characteristics). Yield hunting also means you run the risk of "catching the knife" so to speak. A company recently rocked by a sell-off will be trading at a higher yield, but that sell-off may have been due to concerns around growth which means that juicy dividend is on the chopping block.

@HepCatJack

The problem with the MLP ETF is that the portfolio owner will have K1 forms to fill out every year and it's more complicated for an ETF containing a bunch of MLP's as opposed to a single MLP. They also can't be held in retirement accounts to shelter them from taxes. You selected DOO which specifically excludes exposure to financial institutions, but then you picked an ETN which depends on a single financial institution on paying the dividend AND that product supplies a large part of the yield. That's a huge concentrated risk. If you want income with some growth, you are better off with CEF which provide diversification but pay a higher yield. Just make sure you purchase them at a discount to NAV. If you purchase them anywhere from 10 to 25% of discount to NAV, this will easily cover several years worth of fees. They can give you exposure to other countries, to REITS, to Treasury and corporate bonds and because you have a manager behind the fund, you avoid the worse bonds, REITS. RQI for example has beaten VNQ for several years and usually pays 6.5 to 8%. SPXX / QQQX uses stocks respectively from the S&P 500 / Nasdaq 100 so you will get growth and uses call options for income. There is BIF for example which has at its core Berkshire and Hathaway, Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger's company along some of the stocks that BRK invests and it pays usually more than 6%. An advantage of the CEF closed end structure, is the performance of the fund won't be affected by investors pulling out of the fund. If they need the money, they sell their shares to another investor on the stock market and the share aren't destroyed. Some CEF are leveraged to make the yield higher but are limited by law to about 30%. There are Canadian Banks such as RY and CM which pay about 4-5% of yield and they aren't allowed to gamble like U.S Banks because they kept their regulations based on the "Glass Steagall" from the 1930's intact. Canada was less affected by the 2008 recession as a result.

Instead of adding bonds to balance out the volatility, you could look at some long-volatility funds/etfs. There are some convertible- and volatility arbitrage vehicles which allow investors to benefit from 'fear' or directional option strategies. They are a bit more obscure, but smooth the portfolio in times when the entire stock market faces a downturn.

Jimmy - AWESOME VIDEO. I'm 55 and a little behind on saving for retirement and I think I represent a big chunk of the population that needs to start investing more to be ready for retirement. I want to start pumping money into an ETF portfolio like you outlined here that yields around 5% and will pay a good income when I retire. However, could you rebuild this portfolio with all ETFs that grow their dividend payout over time? For example, AMLP has actually cut their dividend in the last couple years. I want some dividend growth for the snowball effect. Additionally could you add 1-2 ETFs like VYMI for foreign dividend exposure?
@apangurra2775

Tom Settles Hello! Maybe index funds will be a faster way to reach your goals? Low fee is a key to success. I would't pay more than 0.2%. When you have reached your goals you can still sell off and buy dividend stocks for retirement. It's worth to compare the different options.

Well done on the video and explanation of the logic. That will certainly get the person the desired 5% return using a passive/low maintenance approach. If someone wishes to put a bit more effort into it you could probably get between 10% and 15% by writing covered call options on a mix of blue chip dividend paying stocks. Might be worth considering that approach for a future video.

@jamesweh209 4 жыл бұрын
All of the ETFs he mentions have decent options markets. You can bump up the return by writing cash secured puts just out of the money on each of these. If you get the stock put to you, it will be buying it at a discount from the current price resulting in a good annualized return.

I'm older and retired so this was of great interest to me. My tolerance for risk is 7/10 so looking for high income and tax efficient with immediate DRIP. With so many new zero cost funds and etfs since this was first assembled I hope that you could make an updated version. One thing though: I'd like to see versions with a single brokerage such as Vanguard or Fidelity etc. I think in the long run you can expect best service if you have a large account under one roof rather than spread out. Please let me know your ideas. Thanks for reading.

Great video. Do you think I can create a Portfolio like this one just using Vanguard ETFS?

I'm sure you can, even if you expand beyond just vanguard, but perhaps stay with funds with fees less than 10 basis points. I'm sure it can be done with just vanguard though

What other alternatives would you use for the BDC etf. I am not a big fan after seeing several of them fall. Also would you make a video of what stocks or etfs/etn/ open or closed funds you would pick? What are your opinions on closed end funds specially diax and spxx?

IF you want a 5% in cash per year do the following. Forget dividend stocks. You get the cash from selling 5% of the worth of your portfolio having the following allocation. 20% Small cap value Etf , 20% Total stock Market etf, 20 short term Government Bonds, 20% Long Term Government Bonds, 20% Gold(or 10% Gold, 10% diversified Commodities).

MGV Is also good. It's the vanguard Mega Value VYM Is the s&p 500 minus any company that is not paying a good dividend. Remember the s&p 500 has about 70 companies that don't pay a dividend.

Im looking to add DGRO to my portfolio of VYM, VNQ, and HDV. Would this add that dividend growth aspect to my portfolio and further diversify me? Great video, thumbs up! 👍

Surprised you didn't mention SCHD. Severely undervalued compared to the S&P 500, has double digit dividend growth rate and is only 13.5x free cash flow today. That will help support that dividend and gives it plenty of room for growth.

Your videos are AMAZING!!! Can you make a video about how to deploy a lump sum of money into the market? Say, $100,000. With the bull market being so old, it is really hard to know how to get a large sum like this invested. Should I average it in little by little and keep the rest in a high yield saving account...or what?

Can you do a video based on the books "the case for dividends" and "Get rich with dividends", especially buying stocks that yield 4.7 to 7% with a growth rate of 8 to 10%. Its called the 10, 11, 12 rule. In the 10th year you shoukld be making 10%, in the 11th year you should be making 12% and by year 20, 30??? 20 to 60% ROI.

Great video and thanks for sharing valuable info. Interesting portfolio indeed. I am not an expert in personal finance like you are, however expense ratio of 0.85% is a bit high for me. Question, what do you think about “all weather” and “golden butterfly” portfolios. Thanks again. Like your channel!
