In this video clip, my grandma tells the Navajo story of how coyote had placed the stars in the sky and shows how to make two constellations using string, Dilyéhé (the Pleiades) and So' Bidee'í (Star With Horns). She continues by showing other string games, like Many Stars (So' Łání), Two Coyotes Running Apart (Ma'ii Ałts'áá' Yilwołí), Open the Gate, Lightening (Atsinitl'ish), the Arrowhead (Béésh Sist'ógii), Unraveling (Wóltáád), and Wood Carrier (Chizh Yooyéłí). Actually, my brother re-teaches my grandma how to make lightening. Many Stars and Coyotes Running Apart are also constellations in Navajo astronomy.
String games (na'atl'o') are only played in the winter by Navajos because that's when the spider is asleep. Also, winter provided more time for social activities like string games or shoe games (Kééshjéé'). My mom used to tell me that if I played string games in the summer, a spider would sew up my butt.
Languages spoken are English and Navajo.
Note: English subtitiles are included if you have little to no understanding of the Navajo language, but annotations must be set to ON to see the subtitles!

This is incredible! When I was a young girl, my friends and I would play string games like this. We called it cat's cradle. I had no idea it was of Navajo origin. There are many patterns here we never learned. So very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Your Grandmother is beautiful.

I am away at a military college, it mostly consists of very very few native americans and we all made a club where we hope to have a space for home. We may be on our homeland but it still remains different, surrounded by so many different cultures. Watching this made me feel happy and like i was at home learning.

Thank you so much! My aunt taught me some of these when I was little. After so much time, I had forgotten and asked her to show me again. She couldn't remember them at all...not even that they existed. I thought it might have been a dream. Thank you so very much. Crying a little.

We used to do similar games when I was a kid. The Navajos were in NC until the govt sent them packing:/. Anyway, I wonder if that's where our old school traditions came from.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I'm actually working on my final project for animation school, and I remembered this very same beautiful Navajo story I read when I was a kid, and I wanted to do some research on it and learn more about it, but sadly, where I'm from (Argentina) there aren't a lot of texts regarding Navajo culture and myths here, so I was wondering if you could maybe direct me to some links or books that I may find? Thank you very much for your kindness!

Hi Daybreakwarrior, I was looking through google for a Navajo translation of the identity of two stars, I came across Countryboy79's Homepage and this video within the web pages. I was wondering if you could help me with this. Located in the constellation of Scorpio and Orion, actually, which two stars the Navajo language is referring to. They are: atsétso (a star in Scorpio) and atseéts'ósi (a star in Orion). I would grateful if you could assist as Navajo Translation is non existent on the web.

So is the Navajo language common among the youth on the Rez? Is the language continuing with the younger generations? I am part native Hawaiian, I speak Hawaiian fluently, however only in the last decade or so have the Kupunas (elders) made a last ditch effort to reinstate the Hawaiian language in the elementary schools.
