I guess Tony dealt with depression most of his life. Many years ago, I watched a special about the emotional problems of child actors who starred in those classic shows and Tony was among them.

Leave it to Beaver was the best show ever written. We still watch every night especially comforting during these times when there's seemingly nothing sacred, no family values in our society. Thank God for this show, the quality, the morals and family traditional values!

I'm 61yrs old and still watch this show on METV. It brings back memories of some of the happiest and care-free times of my life. I always appreciated how "Leave It To Beaver" presented some very real life issues, such as Andy, the handyman, and his problem with alcohol, Beaver's friend that was put in the middle of his parents divorce, when Beaver's friend Richard gave the Police Beaver's name after breaking windows, etc. I felt the Producers were great at how well they presented these issues on a TV Comedy of that time period. It will ALWAYS be one of my favorite shows.

I heard that 👊 I watch these shows with mines before bed when I force them off their devices 🤣 I realize it’s all scripted. But scripted well- it was. The shows are a glimpse into a past America where by in large and generally speaking, people were not so polarized , divided, and over emotionally charged on every effing issue under the sun 🤣 Back when the threats to the American dream were more from without than from within. Yeah maybe I’m being nostalgic, but sometimes when no one can see I weep to myself at what mines have inherited. I’m hoping I can train them up before the world do. Sorry 4 long comment I had a s**t load of coffee this morning 🤣

The show was written through the eyes of a little kid who realistically didn’t grasp everything going on , Tony Dow once mentioned he was essentially an interpreter between the adult and child world. The show becomes more interesting when viewed in that context.

Actually "Leave It to Beaver" was not syrupy at all. The humor was incredibly sharp and there was often subtle satire or social commentary present. The writing, performances, and production values were all top notch. "Leave It to Beaver" was easily the best family situation comedy of that era.

I do agree….as far as comedies go, it’s the only one where I can actually laugh during each and every episode. I especially laughed hard when Ward brought home the pickles and when he offered Beaver some, Beaver took a whiff and said….”what happened in there?” Honestly that kid can make me laugh. And I loved the little mannerism Wally had of rubbing his nose whenever he was in an awkward/uncomfortable situation…..Priceless!

Most of the main characters as adults survived the hype of the show and maintained a more normal life. I do know that some of the secondary actors on the show had some difficulties later in life but I think for the most part they survived being stars in early TV history. It is sad to see someone who was bigger than life when the show was on the air leave us. But Tony's death was no different than my mother dying in June. It is just a part of life and the circle of life.

It's a great show!!! Now, a lot of people were apparently miffed that Wally didn't marry Julie Foster. I didn't like Julie Foster. I thought her character was fake. Mary Ellen Rogers was more the girl next door type who I felt more drawn to. Also, another subtlety in the show was that Ward and June had great chemistry...you could tell that as a married couple, they were best friends and Ward's sense of humour was such a tease toward June. Ward was the moral force of that show, yet he was understanding and playful, too. He's of the best characters ever on TV.

"Leave It To Beaver" would have been as sweet as a powdered donut without Eddie Haskell. Eddie was involved in so many of those scripts. He was the reason Chewy ran from the house crying. He had Beaver upset when he pretended to be hypnotized. He was the reason Beaver sent away for the stereophonic accodian. He was the reason Mr. Rutherford's car was towed away. He was the reason a man confronted Ward about garbage on his vacant lot.

@@jbugs6283 Larry was always guilt tripping poor Beaver. Like the time Ward gave Beaver a buck to get a school notebook and was supposed to bring back the change but couldn't because Larry was in debt and they took the whole thing. "Aw, come on Beaver! I'm your best buddy. You don't want me getting in trouble, do you?" Or the time Larry instigated the bigger kid. "Hey! How'd you like a punch in the nose!?" "Who,'s going to give it to me fat boy? You?" "No, but my best friend Beaver will take you on. He's not afraid of anyone are you Beav?" LOL 😆 One of my favorite episodes is the one where Beaver and Larry convince poor little Benji from across the street that Larry turned Beaver into a rock. That one really had me laughing. By the way, my name is Larry and kids used to tease me and call me Larry Mondello on the playground. My best friend in elementary school was just like Gilbert. I grew up in a town just like Mayfield but a decade later than Beaver. Jerry was born in June 1948 and I was born in March 1958. My parents were similar to Ward and June.

Calamity Kate, Lincoln Nebraska. I grew up in Detroit watching Leave It To Beaver as most people my age did at the time. I moved to Lincoln in the mid seventies and Leta Powell Drake was a local TV personality. I eventually met her twice, once at Dillard's and once at the grocery store.

Can you imagine this goofy woman saying to those two that the show was "so syrupy." How sick is that? How rude! She's probably never watched the show!

I watch leave it to Beaver on ME TV everyday. I realize, however, that when the show started the first episode, season 1, Beaver was in second grade and seven and Wally was in eighth grade and 13. By the time the show ended Beaver was in 9th grade and Wally was in 12th grade. Beaver was graduating from 8th grade going into 9th grade, while Wally was graduating. So it was 6 years difference in their age in the beginning and by the end, I think there was only 4 years difference. I guess when you've seen a show as much as I have, instead of looking at the content of the show you start looking for other things.

I still enjoy the reruns.I find it entertaining, pleasant and a feel good show. It seemed like more of a drama with some comedic elements. I wish we had more tv programs like it out now days.
