In celebration of Halloween I review all three games in the Gargoyle's Quest trilogy: Gargoyles Quest on Game Boy, Gargoyle's Quest II on NES and Demon's Crest for the SNES. How do Firebrand's adventures hold up in comparison to the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, from which this franchise was spawned?
Gargoyle's Quest: 0:47
Gargoyle's Quest II: 7:22
Demon's Crest: 12:59

I play Demon's Crest from time to time since I was a child, and it's soundtrack was one of the main influences that made wanna play kayboards. It was also the first "horror" game I ever played.

There is a trick to the long gap jumps across those fire bridges (that's what I call them). When Firebrand starts to drop, he first accelerates until he reaches the terminal velocity. But every time you press the jump button again, he comes to a halt and hovers. The solution is to just alternate between dropping and hovering quickly and voilà. That should work in both Gargoyle's quest parts.

Thanks! It was an easy series to miss. It's too bad that Gargoyle's Quest II and Demon's Crest are so expensive now. Glad you learned from the video; that's the idea! And yeah, that costume wouldn't have been complete without the can of Pepsi.

I only just now viewed my first review video of yours on a game I barely started for my SNES. I like how you covered all three of these games and what impressed me more was the footage of the gameplay with your "spot-on" narration which outclassed nearly all other video game reviewers online IMO. I am a new subscriber and I look forward to viewing more of your content. Hats off to you!!!!

You can extend the distance of hovering by stopping the hover to fall forward a bit, hovering again, stopping to fall forward a bit etc. The fall adds just enough distance but doing to several times gets you across.

I remember Gargoyles Quest very well. I could complete it in 4 hours by the time I'd become a ninja, mainly down to how slow firebrand moves. There was an old code I used to use on it that I guessed, it would load you up right after getting the buster upgrade, can't remember which letter it was but it was literally 8888-8888 or something. I'm not sure how I figured that out, I think I was just pissing about with it once upon a time.

Solid video man! The only one I'm missing is the first game for the GameBoy. I'm kinda stupid and passed it up a while ago when somebody was selling it in box for $20...CANADIAN. Should have snagged it, lol. I absolutely love Demon's Crest and agree with you that the music and atmosphere in that game is through the ROOF! I hate that part in Garg's Quest 2 as well...that pit that you have to jump perfectly over. If I remember right, I think if you occasionally go out of flying, fall a little bit, and then re-engage flying, it gets you a tad more distance and helps you over it...but I could be mistaken! - Adam

The most underrated trilogy games of Capcom. People prefer to suffer with Ghosts 'N Goblin over the simplicity of these games. No try to build a high score nor time limit, it is just a game who encourage you to explore everything from it. At least, you can tank many hit compared of Arthur who lost his armor from one hit and die after. But the exact reason of why the people didn't play it and didn't hear about, well... Firebrand from Ghosts 'N Goblin is a pain in the butt to deal with and everyone hate him. But to be honest, I agree on that point. But it is nice to play one of the minions as the protagonist for once. No need to rescue a princess, or be acclaimed to be the great hero. Fireband saves the demon realm and that's it. He don't need anything in return and he don't care about to get power (watch the true ending from Demon's Crest). In other word, Firebrand is really a good character. Edit : My favorite game from the trilogy is Demon's Crest.

You mention falling blindly in GQII and there's an ability in GQII on the Gameboy to get around that. The move is called Astral Projection and was added because the level lay outs are the same but the viewing area of the gameboy is smaller. So firebrand will sit in a yoga pose and shoot out his soul and you can fly around and scout ahead for 5 seconds. I have footage of it from my Gargoyle's Quest video its in my Mondo Cool TV play list. You can see the Gameboy footage at 5:25 it shows some of the two extra levels and the two extra abilities added to that version. If you have an Everdrive GB you can play a patched version. It's pretty dope. But I can play gameboy games at my job so maybe that's why I liked the GB version so much.

Great video, in regards to why on the cover he is green on the cover was probably due to the [game boy] screen lol. I always wished for a mod or hack of the gb version to be colorised like zelda dx and donkey Kong 94 but it seems like the NES game is the closest I'm gonna get to it. I had the gb version back in 91 and was able to beat it in a day after months of practising

Nice review, dude! These are pretty great games despite a few flaws. Since you mentioned loving Demon's Crest's box art, have you actually seen the one for the JPN Demon's Blazon? If you thought our version looks pretty evil, check this out: i.imgur.com/4T1RbVl.png Damn. I mean, I like the semi-realistic western fantasy cover we got too (it was made by Boris Vallejo's wife and that really shows, lol), though Firebrand looks a bit off-model, a typical problem with outsourced artwork for the western market back then. *But this one's just such an awesome composition!* Love the lightning-filled void, love the gory circle of demon corpses with Firebrand seemingly adding another one to the pile, and the inclusion of the transformations is a clever touch. Also, is that Somulo in the back? Shit's badass, it's like some early '90s death metal cover.

Thanks! Yeah, i saw the Japanese cover when doing research for this video. It's badass. We got gypped out of a lot of good artwork.
@markkoetsier6475
@markkoetsier6475 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, doubly so with the SNES because of its horizontally-oriented boxes. The whole shape is incompatible with much of the Japanese artwork, and the stupid letterboxing makes it even worse. There's just less space. Come to think about it, I guess the Famicom and NES had the whole shape thing going on too, just reversed, but in the '80s any manga style artwork (so like... 75%) _instantly_ got westernized anyway, so it usually wasn't the main reason.

One thing that confused me about demons crest when I was younger is the cover art on it firebrand is a dark sinister red with gold anklets and bracelets but in the game plain old firebrand is orange with blue anklets and bracelets now of course the legendary gargoyle is red with gold anklets and bracelets but it has horns and the wings (membrane?) Have a gold color along with spiked tips and the legendary gargoyle has more spikes protruding from the elbows and knees which the cover art firebrand lacks (the gold wings spikes and horns) so as I kid I would sit there and compare them for longer then I would actually play the game

Fucking great video man! Never touched the Gameboy title. I want to try it just to see what the series started out with. I did get Gargoyle's Quest 2 on NES when it came out because I was a late adopter to the system. And I played Demon's Crest years later. Nice copy you have! Those are valuable :) Demon's Crest's pros: Beautiful. One of the most beautiful SNES games. Fun gameplay. Kickass music. Cons: Slow down. Difficulty. Those two cons really kill it for me. I like the game. I've played it a ton. But damn is it difficult! And the slowdown takes me out of the immersion experience every time. I still to this day haven't been able to beat the final boss for the best ending. It's just too much heh. I also never liked trying to get the timing right for the swoop in the overworld map. Changing gargoyle types always made me smile and I loved the extra flying time on this game. Gargoyle's Quest 2: My favorite of the series. Probably cause I played it first. I played this game before Ghosts 'n Goblins, so I was pretty shocked when I saw Firebrand dancing around in another game. I think this game did a better job of watching Firebrand grow from a weakling to a powered up master. Lot of NES games did that so well. The gameplay was fun, except those bridge levels you had to pass. This is one of the few NES games I've ever beaten. I'm glad to see others playing this series. Great video buddy.
@NefariousWes
@NefariousWes 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, dude! If you like GQ II, you'll like the first one. I used to like the Game Boy game better than the NES one, but after playing them again for this review, the NES game is a lot like the GB one, only improved. The slowdown never really bothered me in Demon's Crest. In fact, I hadn't even noticed it at all playing it again for this review. And that last "true" boss is so freakin' hard! It really pisses me off! Thankfully, I bought Demon's Crest damn near 20 years ago for $15, so thank god for that. I actually have a ton of games that I kept from years ago that are now worth insane amounts of money. GQ II I bought during summer of last year, and it has more than doubled in value since. And I almost didn't get it cuz I didn't want to pay $40 for it. Glad I did, cuz it is in exceptional condition! I saw it for sale at a local retro store about a week ago for $100! No thank you. Anyway, thanks for watching! It's good to hear from you!

The only thing I disagree with for these games and demons crest specifically is completion time. I actually beat this game as a kid with my grandmother and it took us like a month of on and off playing. Things were so much different back then. The extra time doing things naturally is what created my nostalgia with the artwork and music. I can't stress enough how much I recommend playing these games without any sort of guide. Playing demons crest with a guide will allow you to beat it in just a day. They were never meant to be played that way.

@ 9:35 you're doing it wrong. I see people complain about this too but they just don't know how to play the game. You need to jump high and turn on the hover mode, turn off hover mode, then turn it back again. By doing this you're able to jump further. It's actually really easy and is a bit of a casual filter.

I still don't understand what you mean by "tinny." It's NES music. Unless you're talking about Sunsoft's music, most of it sounds pretty tinny with a greater focus on treble and less on bass. I notice that the earlier capcom games put a greater focus on resonating notes, instead of the more melodic note bends found in later Capcom stuff. Resonating notes are fine, but after they are sustained for a certain amount of time, they begin to grate my ears. I much prefer the more melodic tracks of games like Mega Man 3, 4, 6, and stuff like Mighty Final Fight.

Dongled Too much treble. I just prefer the older tone to Capcom's music. Mega Man 2 and Duck Tales are perfect examples. The music on Mighty Final Fight is a perfect example of the tone I don't care for. Sounds like it's coming from a tin can.
@NefariousWes

For me, regardless of how well the compositions are, that higher pitched tone just doesn't do it for me. I just don't like it.
@Dongled
@Dongled 7 жыл бұрын
See, that's odd to me because the tones in the earlier Capcom games sound SO much flatter to me, as does the bass. and the drums sound SO much better, with greater use of toms and other percussion. When you listen to like, Bionic Commando or Ghosts and Goblins, everything sounds very uninspired, at least, in my opinion. Not saying the compositions themselves are bad, but I always preferred the more frantic, melodic Capcom works.

I feel the opposite. I can't stand the percussion of Capcom games since Mega Man 3.

demons crest is by far the best of the bunch,that game is on par with the mega man x titles and does away with the rather dumb and unnecessary overworld rpg elements nonsense of the first two...it also does away with dumb life mechanics by giving you infinite continues...meaning if you cant beat it you've got no one else to blame but yourself because youre given all the time in the world to learn and adapt to everything....can you imagine how much better of a series the castlevania franchise would've been with that kind of feature....the games levels are pretty easy but that's irrelevant cuz all the challenge comes from the bosses which is where the challenge is supposed to come from in action platformer games....and this game certainly has some of the more challenging bosses of the snes era...hell the true final boss and secret boss are some of the hardest bosses in action platforming history period id say

9:55 , first let me tell u that I looove gargoyles quest II, I had to stop the video in this part even if in the rest of it u explain it, I just couldnt, and yes, u are doing it wrong, jumps that require long distances u have to jump high, let o a little bit, then hold again, bc when ur falling u still gain distance, so u let go little by little, I love this mechanic, that does not make it easier but its the correct way, if I may add my dream would be to have from software doing a collaboration with capcom and do another one, omg that would be insaaane, but how things are now mostly with microsoft pushing the industry on not even letting anyone show the quality they have for us bc they will use it to buy all studios and publishers... We stick to the old games and imagine

I see this complaint a lot about gameboy games. Firebrand does not move too slow. Try playing the game on an original DMG 001 Gameboy. Not a Gameboy Color, GBA, Super Gameboy, Gameboy Player or emulator. The screen on an original gameboy is a piece of shit if Firebrand moved faster it would be unplayable on the hardware it was designed for.

Greatly disagree here. First, I think Gargoyle's Quest is the second best Game Boy game after Zelda. They nailed almost everything. The soundtrack is so good, so epic, there's just nothing like it. Also they just invented a new sub-genre with those flying/wallgrabbing mechanics and they did a fantastic job at building level design and the whole game around that right away. Good stuff. But yeah, sadly it's really short. GG2 was kinda more of the same, but not quite there. Jumps felt much floatier. Bosses were smaller and less ingenious, they felt more like something that could have been in any game. All of GG1 boss battles made great use of the new mechanics, GG2 just was kind of a letdown in comparison. GG2 soundtrack is ok but a far cry from the epicness of the original. And then, Demon's Crest. A good game in its own right, but I'm sorry, clearly the worst entry in the series imo. Taking away some of the unique mechanics by giving you infinite flight right from the start is only one issue. But then look at level design. The first stage is almost entirely horizontal, it could have been a Ghouls'n'Ghosts stage just as well. This applies to many of its stages, this game just keeps forgetting what it is about. The first boss battle. It takes place on flat ground, completely ignoring the series' unique mechanics that GG1 used in every single boss fight. That's not a one-time slip, as almost all of DC's boss fights take place on flat ground with no oppurtinity to claw to any wall anywhere. What's more, it does that BS thing of "same boss with different colour palette" all the fucking time. What's worse, the boss music is just crap, sorry. And to make it even worse, they designed the game in a way that you have to go to the menu and switch between different gargoyles all the fucking time. In some boss fights I spent half the time in the menu to switch back and forth. This is simply crap design. Again, DC is a good game, but quite a letdown after the Game Boy original. Gargoyle's Quest: 10/10 Gargoyle's Quest 2: 8/10 Demon's Crest: 7/10

Honestly, I feel the entire trilogy is pretty "meh". I'm not a big fan of vertical scrolling stages, so that's probably a big factor in why I feel the way that I do. I haven't played any of these games since this review, so I would need a refresher. I'm in no hurry to do so.

@@NefariousWes yeah that's fine, let' just agree to disagree there. In my opinion, GG1 was one of the big moments of gaming while the sequels just failed to live up to it. Especially Demon's Crest.
