Just a side-note, you might find that the long lists of wants do subside over time. In 2019 when I started no-buying I had huge wishlists in all my journals. Now I can only think of 3 or 4 things I want, which I have on a birthday list, and none of them feels particularly urgent. But it did take a long while to get to this point 😂 and I particularly remember getting really fixated on certain items at times, which often led to slip-ups in the early days (and definitely that feeling where the wishlist is like a to-do list and you won't be 'complete' somehow until you have those things)

It’s so easy to move up the reasonable price point to $500 or above and stay there. Maybe worth unpacking what 'elevated' brand names evoke in one to make them desirable. Did previous high-end purchases deliver all that one had hoped when fantasizing about them and adding them to cart, versus when they’ve been in our closet for a few months? Personally, I have sensitive skin and have to cut tags out from tops and sweaters. It’s very clarifying then to compare quality among tagless low-end and high-end, thrifted and new pieces. It taught me to learn about and look for quality (fabric, cut, condition) irrespective of brand and newness. Honestly, I’ve seen the same range of fabric, cut and condition at thrift stores as at high-end department stores. Truly, it’s helpful to learn to love a useful, beautiful object for its qualities and disassociate from the supposed brand value entirely. Saves money and the weird worry of chasing after the latest SoHo Club of sweaters or dresses. As you say, hopefully unplugging from short-form social media will help (though you’ll still be getting influenced by HLP who seems prone to brand fetishizing herself). I hope this doesn’t sound mean. I’m hoping to help others find the relief of not believing brand pitches anymore.

Don't worry about sounding mean, your comment doesn't come across that way at all - rather, thank you for your thoughtful and valuable remarks! Allow me to think out loud in response to your feedback: I also have had experiences where the "expensive" version wasn't right for me, and a thrifted version (sometimes at less than 10% of the cost of a more "designer" item) turned out to have much more value in my life. Clearly "elevated" brands are not inherently better but there's something else at play here. I also agree that HLP does have a fair handful of brands that she seems to hold in high regard and I also admit to having been influenced by her to purchase from the very same brands, whether or not they are actually right for me. A glaring example is Printfresh pajamas, which she loves, and I purchased several sets over previous years only to discover that I do not love that cotton poplin material for sleepwear or even for its aesthetics. Sigh. I think also it's easier to fall for the "influencing" when I also share some of the proclaimed goals of the influencer, in this case, more conscious spending...and it becomes tricky when someone is literally making money from brand partnerships or affiliate links, or even just receiving promotional products for free. In her specific case (shes def not the only one this applies to!) even though she preaches intentional spending and not shopping irresponsibly, part of her literal work these days involves pushing products towards her audience by showing it in one way or another, disclaimers or not, and people like me have proven to be susceptible - even though I cognitively don't want to fall for that anymore! - And I'm finally taking tangible steps to immunizing myself against this "see it, want it, buy it" cycle. I guess the first step has been trying to take "buy it" off the table, and I'm now also addressing the "see it" and "want it" parts of this loop... Thank you again for your comment!!!

I’ve moved to neutral footwear for universality. I have a few pair of lovely heels … I wore out my Bandolinos that looked like your purple heels you decluttered with the back strap. I still miss them-they were so comfortable.🥰 But the reality is if I don’t have an outfit and event to use it, I don’t buy it-I admire from afar and chant “I don’t have to buy everything I think is pretty”.

If your headphones are still functional, you could perhaps replace the cushion part? The cushions are usually sticked on the headphones with a kind of double-sided tape. I used to have these Beats Solo headphones, changed the cushion pair twice and they lasted about 5 years. Bought the model specific replacement set off of amazon, it came directly with the tape.

Yes you are right! I Googled and was surprised to see that even though my headphones are from 2015, there are still replacement pads available. I'm actually not sure I even need to replace the pads yet - it was more of an excuse to "want" new headphones, but now that I've talked myself out of that, I feel like I can just wait and see on the replacement pads too!

I actually wash athletic shoes and shine dress shoes. I wouldn't say I like buying new all the time. I wish I could do it with my vehicle where as long as it still takes me from point A to point b I would not care if it gets rusty. But vehicles do not last long either.

Re: Vivaia - I wouldn’t recommend the Vivaia block heels, I found that the tip of the shoe gets very worn out and the fibre gets practically frayed/loose especially with pointy styles. To increase the longevity of my shoes I chose only leather now as I can repair with a leather pen any scuffs at home. Also I ask the cobbler/shoe repair guy to add an extra layer of soles, since all the scuffing is because the shoe tip isn’t protected by a welted base/ or bc the sole is way too thin and close to the ground. With Vivaia, there is no way to repair them if the fibre gets worn. Yes you can wash them in the washing machine, but they also stick to dirt and mud so much!…

Good to know!! I have a pair of Vivaia flats, sounds like I should try and wear them more and observe what happens to maybe talk myself out of getting any more pairs. Makes sense about the base/soles of the shoes too, looks like the nicer ankle boots that I have already do in fact have a welted base, and were originally made like that. So helpful to know what details to look for! I have a sneaky suspicion that the "best" move for me might be to re-home the few hot pink pieces of clothing in my wardrobe, and therefore I won't even have a desire for hot pink shoes either...

I mean I'm 2 months in the past and you're already so far along into being more aware of what your wish list means to you! I'm impressed and can't wait to see what's coming up. I think after this year, you'll be able to work out a 'concert blacks come under a "uniform allowance"' kind of deal that you're comfortable with, because you're already working within a constraint. 😄 Having already been through my own "I spent how much on what and have how many things?" phase with my wardrobe: For me... I still have a wish list, but it's not individual items, it's a keyword or phrase. So currently I have "bucket bag" and "ankle boot". I don't actively look for these things, but if I happen to come across a lead (like your bag!) I'll go take a look. If I purchase something, the category goes off the list, because I've got it. I've found that using categories makes me stop and go "do I have this thing already? (or can I make it)" and more often than not, I do or can, so I have to truly understand why I *want* more. It also makes me less likely to be worried that I'm going to 'miss out' on a particular item; I'm not naming something specific and I don't have to get *that thing* but rather one of a kind of thing. This approach certainly won't work for everyone, but I think it's important to find something that works on a personal level long term. And of course I'm not against the occasional "yeah but I really really really want it" purchase. My current pain point is knitting. I always want more yarn.

I really like your approach of the keywords, and then also the idea of the occasional "really want it" purchase. I think that after this year's "training wheels of no buy" get taken off I'll be left wanting less overall, which will make these kinds of ideas more easily implemented!

I’m watching this so I can also talk myself out of a few things too. Funnily enough, I also wanted to buy some sunglasses and a Casio (baby g watch) but I don’t need another one of either of those things! I have sunglasses and I have a watch already lol so let’s hope I don’t go back to wanting those. Also, I just got back from traveling and realized how heavy my bag is on my shoulder so I’ve been looking into getting a backpack. Well, I fell into the black hole of all the travel backpacks out there. All that research actually has made me not want to buy a backpack anymore 😂 there’s just so many options and I can’t decide..I fell into the trap of shopping for the perfect one. I have a few that I want to look at in person and hopefully I’ll find one that works well. It’s not a need since I only travel a couple times a year for work but I’m thinking I need it to be more comfortable when traveling. I’m glad you’re wearing the badlands sweater, it looks cozy. Not that you asked but my favorite sunscreen is from Isdin. I’ve tried several expensive sunscreens but their mineral one is the best I’ve found and it’s a big bottle!

Actually, after making this video it's getting easier for me to tell myself "you already have one so the answer is just no" and it's seeming more and more silly to keep wanting these things that I literally don't need because I already have one. So maybe this reflection is working for me! Love that your research made you stop wanting a backpack haha sometimes it's easier to just get buy with whatever you have and be done with it! I'm always happy to have recommendations so thanks for the SPF suggestion!

Omg, I totally get the travel backpack hole 😂 the struggle is real! I also wanted something that I could use as a work bag to the office and I just didn’t fancy getting a Longchamps Pliage, because carrying on your shoulder is just not ergonomic at all and it’s so bad for your posture. My top tip and breakthrough was thanks to a Reddit comment that suggested I look into the Mina Baie Emmy diaper bag- I tell you it’s perfection for my needs, and I would not have thought to even look at such a product. :))

Absolutely! The funny thing is, I've now continued to use my old Sony headphones without even replacing the pads, because this really was just a fleeting desire to buy something "sleek and new". Just about to start the video… i have kept myself an wishlist. I have my hobby that i am «free» to buy what i want, BUT in that hobby i also have preferances and an absolute no. Lets say the thing is wrong color, wrong texture or an art i dont do, then hard pass. What i do with that wishlist is i write the thing i like that i want down, and let it sit. Sometimes i see it again as an ad, or i look it up and change my mind, and scratch it off my list. Other times i see the thing and STILL LIKE IT. Then i allow myself to buy it, or wait a bit more. But i have limited my list to one spectrum. Lets say you are into interior, then your list might be for interior. Other than that i just come to relize i have everything i want. Right now i dont love my clothing, but i want to change the, all when the ones i have now are worn out, at that time i want to start over with a new minimalistic capsule wardrobe. That means i have a plan for an are/ and more areas in my life. This plan help me not spontaniously buy things, because when i see something i like, i tell myself ; will this be something id like in my future capsule minimal wardrobe? Often thats no. IF yes, them i screenshot it, and if i have forgotten it by the next time i tidy my phone, then i delete it. If i still like it, i just have it there until my time of repurchase has come. Another thing that also really help me not buy things is that i want to move, because this is not my dream home/settled place. So i try to declutter for the move, and i dont want to purshase lots of things now because my taste and preferances may change. I am much more aware of my goal, which is i want a more thought out home in the future. Without many things from the past. My main rule is that if i NEED a new thing of my essential, like work shoes not to get hurt in the feet, i have to buy new work shoes. But if i walk past a shoe store and see new sandals and think they look so niceeee, i remember what shoes i always tend to use and they are nothing alike, meaning i will not use the new ones alot. It might be nice for better occations? Mby, but i have no special occations up right now, and i dont want them to just dusting down. Ok this got long, but my point is awareness is the most helpfull things. If i see an influencer wear something it doesent mean i automathically want to buy it, because the style might not be. I might make a mental note of a detail i like, but unless i find the perfect item for me, i wont buy. No matter what it is! Getting over fomo is also helpful. I had to do that when y2k came back. I love the style, but i do not have the body nor confidence for that 😂 but i learned to appreciate it on other people. And my style is sort of inspired by y2k with colors instead!

I love the awareness that you have and all of your systems for deciding when to buy something! I'm getting closer this year too, through removing the option to buy for now and give myself the time and space to become more aware. Maybe in the future years my system will look more like yours ☺️

I like your approach to talking yourself out of things and the flow chart idea. On sort of a related note, I'm wondering if you've seen Joshua Becker's 4-part series on changing spending habits....one came up in my feed yesterday and I thought he had some interesting perspectives. I'm not doing a "no buy" but I do get swayed by clothing, so that's an area I want to change to further align with minimalism values. I'd like to curate a capsule for each season and let go of excess. So, I was sad to hear that your own capsule experiment was not working out. Have you completely abandoned the idea of a capsule? Or do you have some ideas on a way to do it that may make it more successful in the future? Would be interested in hearing.

Yes I'm subscribed to Joshua Becker too, and might have to revisit that series! Regarding the capsule wardrobe, there are things that it was helpful for and some other definite benefits but I also found myself grabbing pieces outside the capsule after the first few weeks. I'm still processing whether it "worked for me" or not, and whether I'll try again using what I've learned or try another different approach for the summer season...stay tuned 🤔

The colour was accurate, so no problems there. The yarn was the problem. It actually wasn’t cleaned properly and it had lots of plant debris that was caught inside the worsted yarn. I’ll post a picture tomorrow on this thread so you can see. I literally still need to try to take them out with the tweezers from inside the yarn, otherwise it literally leaves scratches on my skin and they prickle even with a cotton Tshirt underneath… also, the yarn still “sheds “ tiny 1cm wool fibers everywhere and I see them on the sink. Honestly, the reason I didn’t return that jumper was bc the return had to be paid for and there were also extra taxes etc. I’ve also added a comment on Hannah Louise’s video review on her babaa jumper, so that at least other people don’t have the same experience as mine. I do like babaa , and the other two items I got from there were perfect but this earth wool one was a total flop.
