Yesss I’m so glad to see someone talking about this! I don’t think wishlisting is inherently bad advice, clearly it works for people but it really increases my browsing and I hyperfixate so much on the items.
@linzfae22103 ай бұрын
I agree. I already have OCD and undiagnosed ADD and a wish list is almost like a “To Do” list for me, I hyper-fixate on marking off the things. I think it can be a good tool for some but after trying it out for pretty much a year, it definitely doesn’t work for me.

Right?! Not knocking advice if it works for people but for me right now, it's not a great idea 😅

I think you are correct. I do like having a mental wish list and usually when time goes by I don’t really want the items anymore. But some things prevail over long time and then I consider them good ideas for my wardrobe. I would love a pair a Mary Jane leather flats and I know the ones I want and then it can be a dream in my horizon knowing that what I have is already enough ❤

I agree with all your points in this video. In my experience, having a wishlist only fuels my shopping obsession because i spend so much time thinking about what I want. But, what I really want is to stop wanting. The closest thing I have to a wishlist right now is my amazon shopping cart, where I have some nail items I want to buy only once I finish what I have (gelx tips).
@Alexas.nobuyyearАй бұрын
Yes! I've also kept amazon carts previously but the more I find out about the problems of billionaires and Amazon as a company, the LESS I want to buy anything at all off of Amazon...so I'm trying to quit! 😅

Ive had the exact same thoughts about the Wish list. You are basically enshrining your desires into a shortlist; making them even more desirable. The creme de la creme of your materialistic hankerings. I bought everything off my wish list so it didn't work for me!

This is a different perspective on wishlists and valid points. I have one myself but I'm not tempted to check it off. Deleting Instagram and unsubscribing from marketing emails has helped me a lot. Another thing is browsing everything and everywhere has made me see a pattern with companies. They're all selling the same things (at least in my eyes). It gets boring. I accepted that it's okay to want things but self-control/discipline is applied. For every year I allow myself one high value ticket item but I save for it.
@Alexas.nobuyyear3 ай бұрын
If it works for you, that's great! I'm also curious as to what kind of items you end up buying, it's always so interesting to hear what others like. That's also so cool about seeing the patterns with companies and how things start to look the same - I'd love to reach this point too. I definitely have problems sometimes with "fetishizing brands" where it's almost like the brands I like get a free pass and I'll be much more likely to buy again, hoping to kind of get a reset on that this year.

The only wishlist I have is in Amazon and it’s where I take things out of my cart to think about or to monitor price drops. I think a wishlist, for me, is a bad idea beyond that. I don’t want to obsess over things to want.. which I’m sure I would do. Most times the things get deleted and never bought. 🥰

I love this video! It’s great seeing you adapt and restructure your no buy for you and your goals. I also have a problem with my wishlist feeling like a to-do list (for skincare and body care, specifically) but since I have sensory issues, specific conditions, and specific preferences, items remove themselves overtime. This is something I thought of last week and meant to comment it and I completely forgot. If you wanted to keep a wishlist type video without engaging in the shopping behaviors, it might be interesting to keep a list of all the items that sparks interest in your brain instead of just the complete want items. You had stated previously that you see posts and are intrigued for a moment and then you think about it and move on, but if you were to compile a list of things (non-specific) that sparked something and then reflected on it, it might kinda shock you into how much your brain tries to sell you, if that makes sense? Since a big aspect of your no buy is you wanting to avoid being influenced, a visual list of every influenced moment might be handy for that? This was a nice video and I’m really loving the direction your videos are going in!
@Alexas.nobuyyear3 ай бұрын
Thank you! And it's great to honor your specific preferences or sensory issues - I've been known to buy something in years past, even if I know my preferences don't align, just because I was so influenced or curious to try something new. I am so happy to move past this phase of my life. And that is a great idea - I think I am indeed realizing how much my brain is trying to sell me organically through this year of "not buying"! I am also happy to report that I am having much fewer moments of influence as a result of my implemented habits, staying off of social media more, and focusing on other things. But I am curious to act on this idea possibly in the future by doing a "test" of sorts, perhaps where I either go to a store or scroll on socials on purpose to see if anything does manage to grab me even after changing many of my mindsets. More on that in the future and thank you for commenting!

These are interesting points. I definitely can see how they can be counterproductive for some and cause increased shopping instead. They actually keep me from shopping. I have one thing on my list that I haven’t talked myself out of because it’s a need. I started one for next spring/summer because I have major needs. I’m trying to stick with 5 items per season (5 for spring/summer and 5 for fall/winter) for a total of 10 for the year if I need them.I actually need spring/summer clothes, but am waiting until next year to buy so I can truly work through what is need and want, and prevent myself from impulse or panic buying as that is what gets me in trouble.
@Alexas.nobuyyear6 күн бұрын
Glad to hear it works for you, I can also see how maybe it is super helpful if you do have needs to fulfill or are deciding to buy a certain number of things, it can be a kind of comparison board...but since I don't actually need anything and am trying to buy zero things for now, I'm trying to learn that I can wait until I do have a need to "shop" at all, which includes the "wishlisting" 😅

@@Alexas.nobuyyear what I love about addressing this topic is acknowledging that you don’t have to go with the flow or follow the rules is it causes a person to shop mindlessly.

Interesting perspective on wish lists. I only make one if my husband asks for gift ideas. That list is always things like fancy teas that I won't splurge on myself and a few books. Things like that. My desire to buy non-essential things, clothes excepted which I'm working on, is very low now. It is not necessarily the spending money that I don't like, but the time I feel I waste when I am shopping around. BTW, cutest little interruption there at the end.
@Alexas.nobuyyear3 ай бұрын
YES that is another logical and practical application of a wishlist that I didn't mention in this video! Thank you so much for pointing that out, wishlists are perfect for gift ideas - I think I forgot about that one because my focus has been on changing my habits of buying things for myself rather than things others might buy for gift-giving occasions. I relate to that so much as well about feeling more that the time is an issue regarding shopping/browsing habits! I'm finally starting to tackle my own wardrobe more in detail (as I'll hopefully have more time over the summer) and will definitely share any insights I might have regarding the desire for clothes - and likewise if you have any breakthroughs in that category please share 🙏

Agreed! I started a no buy this month to stop impulsive shopping, and I bought something in day 7. It's so easy for me to justify any purchase, which is frustrating, but I haven't given up. I appreciate your check ins, I'll do the same here in the comments ❤

Yes please keep us posted, we're in this together! Don't give up! As you might have seen, I failed my No-Buy year about 4 months in and now, almost halfway through month 5, I feel I am finally turning a corner and my "failure" was part of being able to move forward. More on that later!

maybe a good idea is to wish list a type of product you need, like new running shoes and if you come across a new good pair of running shoes you can buy them

I still have a couple of wishlists that I haven't erased yet, on the hopes my favorite items get on sale. What I have been doing consistenly is reviewing them though. When I see the item isn't on sale, I remove it from the wishlist. That's the main reason I made those lists in the first place, right? I commented on another video that I only have one skincare product for each need and I don't buy backups anymore. The thing I've realised this past week is: as the bottle of cleansing gel is getting empty, I'm feeling the need to start searching a replacement and that takes me to browse other products. Also, the excitment is so big (feeling of accomplishment, compulsive shopping behaviour, etc) that I feel I'm investing too much time and energy on finding a replacement. I'm still navigating through those feelings T_T
@Alexas.nobuyyear3 ай бұрын
That makes sense, if the wishlist is helping you shop sales responsibly then the benefit might outweigh the possible pitfalls! I definitely feel you on the replacements kind of kick-starting browsing behavior. Luckily I'm at a place right now where I don't need any imminent replacements, so perhaps by the time I'm browsing for those again I will have "turned the corner" on some of my old impulses... I believe in you though! If you don't want to be buying anything other than your replacement, maybe the wishlist IS a helpful tool to get whatever you "want" in the moment off of your mind until the mood to buy more than just the replacement passes!
