What is the Notch Filter in Audacity and how can it help you obtain a cleaner track? This video explains that and as a bonus, describes the Plot Spectrum feature that enables you to pin point irritating hums and whistles.

Thanks for the video! Using your technique, I located three fairly major peaks. When I played the three hz tones together online, it recreated the nasty background noise almost exactly!

Wow! This tutorial and your channel deserves a lot more subscribers than what you have! I sometimes wonder why on Earth all unwanted videos get so many likes while something this informative and productive gets unnoticed. Nevertheless, this is going to be one of my favourites in 'What did I learn today!' Thanks so much for your tutorial and cheers from Bangalore, India :)

This is so much better than paying $250 dollars a month for notch therapy

$250 a month? wow that's cheap. My therapist charges $400. But then my notches are severe

I always prefer notch filter over broadband noise reduction or spectral editing, because of the precision at high Q. With minimum phase I can't hear any artifacts. Noise reduction would make the sound hollow or plastic like mp3. I like to use an equalizer plugin that allows me to continuously preview the processed audio as I sweep and finetune the frequencies. I input all identified peaks in one go, because I can only hear their combined effect, and cannot be sure that a notch is precise if other louder peaks are still present. I use an old TC Electronics parametric EQ most often. FFT based Noise reduction in theory allows to keep a signal untouched if it is over the threshold of the whistle. But in practice, if the notch is narrow enough, the created gap is not audible, and often not even visible in later analysis. The effect of NR however is audible, as the shape of the background noise gets changed dynamically as the processing attacks and releases (mp3 like effect). Notch filter is especially preferable at low and mid frequencies.

Use the built in Analyze > Spectrum as shown in this video and also the link shown in description which may be a bit clearer. Hover your mouse pointer over the highest spike and it will tell y ou the frequency at the bottom.

If you can isolate the Tick frequency and run a notch filter on that, then do the same on the Tock. ??? That's what I would try. Use the Analyze>Spectrum to get the frequencies.

I tend to have a high pitched whistle on my recordings? how do I identify this in the frequency analysis?

hello , what should we take as the default value for 'Size' during frequency analysis ?
@cajun5454
@cajun5454 5 жыл бұрын
A good question. I usually try to take the largest I can get to have enought to examine. Sometimes I take two or three samples to look at and will usually get the right frequency that is causing the problem and needs to be reduced.

thanks for the reply, my only purpose of analyzing a song was to find the max frequency in the song (to find out the fake 320 kbps tracks from my collection ).Tracks with frequency going upto 20 Khz and beyond i considet to be genuine 320 kbs tracks, now that i have told this , what would you suggest the default value for 'Size' only for finding the maximum frequency ?

I found this to not only be a poor explanation, but it took forever for this guy to get to his point, which was pretty much useless. Shift it up a few gears, Phil.
