As far as sharpening 440A or any stainless steel blade for that matter a high quality stainless steel kitchen sharpening rod is golden! Above is a link for a "Hoffman" made in Germany stainless steel sharpening rod. The Hoffman brand is the best honing rod made in my opinion and is top quality German hardened steel. If you have the D2 Tool Steel MK3 Combat/Dive Knife that steel is too hard to sharpen on a (stainless steel honing rod) as the steels composition matrix has a higher Rockwell hardness so it won't work on a stainless steel sharpening rod. Refer to my U.S. Navy MK3 MOD 0 Made in Germany video review and demo link above for tips to sharpen D2 tool steel. So when you first get a knife it should have come from the factory with correct secondary razor sharp cutting edge. If it did not then its currently fucked...to get your knife sharpened to razor sharp like I did mine above use a 2" or 4" high speed belt sharpening sander/grinder utilizing 180 grit grit size for a few passes at 12-15 degree angle each side and then go to 400 grit one pass each side at 12-15 degrees. Then use your "Hoffman" kitchen stainless steel sharpening rod just like I did above video to maintain a combat ready razor sharp knife.
