Didn't know Carlos had left the custom shop. He did a great baritone build for CME. As for other custom builders, have to go with Suhr. Their production guitars are already high end, the custom builds awesome. John is also a former Fender guy, the amount of talent that has come out of Fender is incredible.

Oh you guys will like what I've got cooking.... I don't wanna give away too much but I will say developing the right metallurgical formula for custom parts took me a while to get right, about a year ago I harvested a couple 200 year old trees that will be made into necks, and just because I'm building brand new guitars doesn't mean I don't wanna buy pickups made in the 50s and 60s to put inside them.... I'm currently working on developing a system for neck shaping based on an individuals hand i.e. I take a mold of your fretting hand and then make the neck shape custom made to fit your hand. Trust me when I say that's all just the tip of the iceberg, get ready for guitars on a level the likes of which humanity has never seen!

I’m Canadian so I vote Godin Guitars, not sure if they’d be considered Boutique but they make great instruments and can’t beat the price points for what you get IMO, at least here in Canada.

Those are some beautiful guitars!!! I couldn’t agree more about that. They look and play great! I’m not sure if they’d be considered a boutique or not, but compared to the big guys they probably are. Can’t go wrong with a Godin though!

I'm not Canadian, but I am experienced in locating the best quality and most accessible guitars. I've always played any selected guitar 🎸, before reaching conclusions. I bought a Godin 5th Avenue semi-hollow body ,6 years ago. Highly-regarded players have heard it, played it, and assessed it. The Godin has won the approval and astonished praise of 95%+ of the listeners, builders, and players. Many high profile players, however, have been restricted from using Godin, due to brand-name legal fine print. This restriction is changing, and I'm seeing a significant upswing in praise and purchasing among great players. Build quality, QC, fit& finish, electronics, playability, wood selection & aging, and tone are unsurpassed. Bang for buck is astounding. Godin is now a premium high-end builder and people are recognizing that fact.

Banker is making crazy good stuff! Mule resophonic. Danocasters are great. I have a novo Solus one pickup which I love. I think a boutique builder can give you something of fender masterbuilt quality for half the price. There is that broken in neck feel that comes from a real luthier spending the time to make it as comfy as a pair of old jeans. Even a 4G fender custom shop guitar does not have that feel that say a masterbuilt neck does (at least in my experience) but then you get a true boutique guitar and they’ve spent that extra time to make sure the frets are smooth and the neck is nice and it feels right. Danocasters are like that. Bankers are like that. Echo park is like that. To me that is a big part of what you get from boutique builders is that really great feeling neck

My local Luthier assembled a Fender Esquire for me that would measure up with the quality any Fender Custom Shop guitar of the same model. He charged me $300 for labor and I provided ALL the Parts. He hand fitted the neck to the neck pocket and all the parts align up properly and it plays like a dream. Partscaster or not it was well worth the money and much cheaper than buying Custom Shop or Boutique.

I just had my first custom built done. I went with a pretty traditional Strat style beefed up. It beats both my Fenders and my Gibson Les Paul hands down. I would just like to say I completely and totally agree with Baxter’s take on Star Wars, absolutely 100% correct. I also didn’t know Carlos left Fender. My favorite FCS builders are Dale and Vincent. I love their relics because, while the relic haters say that should be done naturally, a lot of what they do would very very rarely happen naturally to a new guitar (especially with plasticized nitro and non-smoking bars 😉) and would take 60 years to if it did, and it is just so satisfying to look at and really creates a story. One my favorite boutique brand is Rock N Roll Relics, they make some awesome stuff.

IF I could afford it, I’d buy an acoustic by Kevin Ryan in Westminster Ca, an archtop by Dale Unger of American Archtop Guitars in E Stroudsberg, Pa, and an electric by Matt Artinger from somewhere in the north east. Not sure if he’s in Pa, NJ or elsewhere. I’ve had the honor and pleasure of not only playing a guitar by each of them, but meeting each of them back around 2005/06. Each of them are brilliant, talented beyond belief and wonderful people. Also I’d buy an archtop from Chris Mirabella in Long Island. While I’ve never met him we have a mutual friend and I know he does amazing work.

Sorry.... NOT a Relic fan! I DO really like a well built fretboard with exquisite fretwork and beautifully rolled edges...... but NO way on a beat up finish. Why pay more to make it look 50 years old? I sort of understand the thoughts behind eliminating that "first ding" trauma, but buying a brand new guitar that looks 50 years old just isn't right. Boutique means: Something you think is really great and esoteric and nobody knows about, handmade by a name nobody knows about that made shitty amps in the early sixties now is cool, bench tech builds amps that has switches that makes differences that are virtually inaudible, guitar that people think it is just another LP or Strat copy or a piece of gear that you hope another STAR WARS Jedi will appreciate.
