So I finally completed this for the first time. I wanted to say a couple things about this video which inspired me to do this task and I greatly appreciate Koon Trucking and you guys for making this. As others have said, leaving the feeler gauge in while tightening down the jam nut is a huge help and it gave me piece of mind knowing it's good. I bought a set of feeler gauges from my local Napa for 25$ and I removed all of the other ones off the holder except for the . 50 and . 70 mm and that was a giagantic help also because things get a little slippery and having them attached to the big holder was a major help. The T handle torque wrench couldn't possibly be 6 ft lbs as others have said. I used a very small ratchet and a 5mm hex socket and it gave me way more control when initially tightening the jam nut. I tightened the valves by feel only. No one mentioned that the valve cover bolts have an order of tightening and that the torque is 15 ft lbs on those. I replaced my valve cover gasket but it probably wasn't necessary. I rotated the turning tool towards the drivers side which in turn makes the engine rotation clockwise when viewed from the front of the tractor. I guess some people were complaining about Wild Bill, hi, Wild Bill BTW!, turning the engine backwards and I don't know enough to know if it matters. On my first attempt I had managed to get out of order so I slept on it and started from the beginning the next day. I adjusted according to the firing order and not only does it idle smoother and sound great, the engine brake will send you through the windshield on 6 cyl lol. Thank you guys for making this video because it gives me more confidence to continue lifelong learning about my equipment and how to maintain it! I appreciate all of you. Edward

Thank you guys very much!! I just did my Epa 10 yesterday and it took me about 2 hours since I was really taking my time. I'm confident I could knock it out in an hour next time.. I had called my usual shop for an estimate a couple weeks ago and they told me 8 hours labor since they weren't familiar with the Paccar overhead procedure. I got the turning tool for $27 off Amazon and the feeler gauge set for $54. You gentleman are an invaluable resource for Paccar owners.. Thanks!!!!

You should ALWAYS tighten the exhaust adjuster down and push out any residual oil from the jake operation before adjusting the exhaust valve or you will get a false measurement, have had this happen alot at the dealership when previous diy'ers or even technicians do overheads and its noisy

Ahem, I believe another fella in another overhead video on this channel coined the phrase, too young, too old, just right in relation to firing order........! Great video, those paccar overheads are gravy if you have the turning tool and an extra set of hands to turn the engine over for you. Good job wally, except for the digital torque wrench, guess I'm just old school and prefer the click!

i was a tech at mhc kenworth and all of the mx engines i pulled for the camshaft to be replaced. i need a torque wrench that was able to do angles. as a example on the fuel unit pumps on the engine shown, the bolts torque to 22 ftlb + 60 degrees. i can set it up to do it in one step on the torque wrench. it is a huge time saver.
@dieseldoctor9294
@dieseldoctor9294 5 жыл бұрын
@@wallyhare8616 I'm a tech as well, cummins, detroit and cat primarily but have experience with paccar as well. I prefer a click style because that's what I invested in early in my career when the digital was just coming out, not cost effective for me to swap all my torque wrenches over to digital at this time, so I just do angles the old school way. Plus if I run up on a torque angle I haven't done before, I grab my buddies digital.

Should tell Bill not to turn the engine backwards next time. Easier to follow the firing order 153624 instead 142635. Also very sloppy holding backup with that T handle torque wrench. Feeler hauge should be removed last after jam nut torque. Shouldn't have to jerk them out either. "Slight resistance" Good try though keep it up just need better attention to detail.

It does matter. The engine should be rotated clockwise viewed from the front. The camshaft is turned by the gear train which always has some play so the valve lash will be different when rotated the other direction. In paccars MX13 manual they specify turning the engine clockwise for setting valve lash because of this...

Where can I get a torque wrench like the tiny Allen one?
@KoonTrucking
@KoonTrucking 5 жыл бұрын
Just talk to your tool dealers and ask them about getting one. That one is 6 in lbs it really needs to be 2 in lbs for overheads.

What t handle tool is that? I've done quite a few overheard with just a regular Allen tool and this way seems so much faster!!

It is way faster. Someone else asked that question and I gave the manufacturer and the model number in the comments of this video. I don’t remember off hand and don’t have it with me.

I’m sorry i can’t remember it off the top of my head but I can’t. A 2 in. Lbs would be better than the 6 we used. It’s pretty tight still on the feeler gauges. I am going to order a 2 in lbs one from either matco or Snap On

Have him wear gloves. He's young. It'll save his liver from the oil and chemicals we all weren't aware of back in the early/mid 90''s. With so much awareness these days it's good to be better safe than sorry.

And was also wondering being its deleted the Exhaust back pressure Actuator could I delete it or unhook it and open the flap? Believe it's leaking there makes a Strange whistle sound off and on Turbo was changed sound is still there.
