Paranoid Personality Explained - When EVERYTHING is Suspect

The general definition of paranoid is being excessively suspicious or mistrustful. So you can have a moment of paranoia where are you preoccupied with suspicions about someone or something. But the difference here is that your suspicions are isolated to a certain situation and it’s not how you feel about everything.
Paranoid personality is more that being paranoid. It’s defined as a constant distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent. This begins in early adulthood and is present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:
There’s a pneumonic for this to make it easier to remember. The pneumonic is SUSPECT
S stands for Suspicious of others
U - unforgiving
S - Suspects partner is unfaithful
P - perceives attacks
E - enemy or friend?
C - no Confiding in others
T - Threats always perceived
Under stress people with paranoid personality disorder can have brief psychotic episodes that last minutes to hours. It's like a pop of irrational thinking where their basic mistrust and suspiciousness goes to a different level that’s not realistic. But that level of delusional thinking doesn’t last. It goes away and that’s what distinguishes this from an illness that leads to persistent psychotic symptoms like delusional disorder, schizophrenia or even psychotic depression.
Paranoid personality can come along with other disorders, so it doesn’t have to stand alone. And as with all of the other personality disorders, people can have features of multiple personalities together such that they have a mixed personality disorder.

I always thought my sister was weird bc she was so paranoid. Then she told me how much she was picked in as a child by her teachers and other students. It’s sad and I understand the problem now. Never bully or taunt others. The damage lasts. I will never understand why a teacher would pick on such a cute, loving little girl.

So this is what I've been dealing with majority of my life. I was bullied as a child by family, neighborhood kids and so called friends. A childhood friend own cousin was literally bouncing a ball off my head while I leaned against the wall repeatedly. I couldn't understand why she was doing it. But things progressed into my adult years with authority figures and personal relationships. I could go on, but everything started in childhood and my teen years of ppl making fun and taunting me about everything to where I would intentionally not go to school now I avoid work and social gatherings of any kind. I want to be with ppl, but I feel disconnected and believe they're mocking me when I'm around. Thank you for this video

If you feel people are looking at you then look back at then... people don't like to be "found out" while doing their thing. I believe you must put your past behind and try to take control of the situation. Yeah people are assholes and society is weird but you need to enjoy being outside/out without feeling threatened. Look at then back until they look away, you will feel much better.

She was constantly,lashing out at family members for thinking bad things! As she got older, and she became a widow, she got involved more with her church and I swear to God it cured her! A lot of her suspicions and anxiety and feelings of inadequacy involved him unfortunately. Which was weird because he tried he be supportive of her in everything. Such a bad situation.

I became exhausted with my sister’s highly sensitive personality. We were best friends … until we weren’t. Her decision, though. I grew weary of the marathon phone calls after family events where she would dissect every comment and gesture she interpreted as a slight against her. She struggled keeping friendships and husbands. She had so many secrets. The day I finally confronted her, she lashed out at me like never before. Brought up every past wrong I had done against her. I saw her behave this way with others which is probably why it took me 45 years to finally have the courage to say something. I was afraid of her. It’s been 10 years since we last spoke. The family is split. She hates some of us so much that she refused to attend our mother’s funeral. My life has a lot less drama now. I only wish she could see this in herself and get treatment. She exhibits every characteristic outlined here.

I grew up in the lower east side of Manhattan, I dealt with what I realize now a lot of trauma. Drugs, violence, abusive bf to my mother and lastly someone trying to take my life. I escaped at 24, to live with my grandmother. Now at 34 years old, a husband and a father, I see now how this trauma has affected me and has followed me long after these instances. It pains me to acknowledge that I’ve become this suspicious character in my neighborhood and all the people that tried to hurt me are still hurting me. I am strong, I am faithful, and this will not consume me. I’m a loving father, a loving husband, and a hard worker. I will overcome this. As someone with this disorder, I will also mention there's often self-loathing that follows expressed paranoia outbursts (at least, in my experience). In addition, I agree that there can definitely be a correlation between the paranoid & crime, but I'd like to think there is hope in learning to control outbursts and being trained to follow healthy thought patterns. It's not always a bomb waiting to 'splode. Idk, while I am grateful for this video, the ending was a bit doom and gloom for me. Thankfully, my parents have been very supportive and have helped me manifest fewer overt symptoms, but the symptoms are always there. Normalizing public discourse about paranoia (instead of seeing it as something to fear/a ticking time bomb for crime/ "low self-esteem") would have definitely helped me when I started manifesting 9 years ago.

I relate to much of this personality. It probably stems from my childhood (doesn’t it always?), when I didn’t know whether my father would come home from work happy or incredibly angry. I learned to try to stay under the radar in a house of six kids. In adulthood, I’ve had multiple men cheat on me. When I had proof and confronted them, they’d always deny and then finally admit it but blame me lol. Were all those relationships a lie? It makes you question everything after a serious betrayal occurs. All of those experiences I had only created a storm of persistent distrust, to the point of where I don’t trust anyone or anything. I feel like I can only rely on myself because others always let me down. It’s affects all relationships, from family to friends to work. I’ve been single for almost 7 years now and not sure if I will ever be able to trust anyone again.

This is spookily topical for me at the moment. I just broke ties with a close relative who is showing every single sign you mentioned. I just don't know what to do. I have my own mental health issues and she was hurting me too much. I want to be able to support her but there is no way she would ever accept an evaluation, she would see this as evidence of a plot against her. I think this is a more widespread problem than clinicians would ever see. It's a diagnosis that would directly feed into the person's beliefs that everyone is against them. How do people come to accept they hava problem?
@DrTraceyMarks
@DrTraceyMarks 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right about clinicians not seeing this very much for the very reason you stated. It’s very hard for them to have insight that what they believe is off and the reason for their problems. It’s easier for them to see other people and other circumstances as the reason for their problems. So many times you just have to break ties with them.

I have diagnosed PPD and the biggest issue I had with accepting it, is the word "paranoia" when I heard the psychiatrist say this I instantly felt like he was victimising me, however when I took the time to look at it, it was right. my distrust (in my mind atleast) I don't ever start a situation with other people, but my evaluation of life is that everyone is going to hurt you at some point, cos people always do, i built a big fort and made myself very independent of others to avoid this for myself and for the sake of maintaining relationships as I find it extremely hard to accept being wronged. I am always living in the future planning what could happen how to avoid it, in this situation this person could do this or that, I can be at home alone and I am planning how to best avoid being in these nasty situations which end up with me being abused even when I have no idea who they identity of this person maybe. It's chronic and hurts my head. What I find extremely problematic too, is that a lot of the time these defences are up and a lot of the time, they serve their purpose...it would be nice to be wrong once in a while, it would make me feel a lot more sane.

I have this problem the things that are being said were actually things that has happened I was put down my whole life. So yes I would see someone calling me beautiful as buttering me up because it has happened. I feel this way because all of those things has happened way too many times for me to believe a person is genuinely nice to me. A person would be nice to use me for sexual favors or for money...things like that mess with your psyche so much where u don't know whose smiling in your face to use you or just playing u for boredom &when being verbally hurt by friends to family, coworkers and dr's is all u know. If you constantly receive negativity from people how do you know when a person is just being a genuine good person. The past makes u remember so you won't have to go through the pain again. My 89 year old dad has this and is a Korean conflict war veteran with undiagnosed ptsd. He's made my family disappear by alienating and gaslighting. I am the youngest and only girl out of 4 older brothers. As heartbreaking this is, I still live with him and one of my brothers. He'll never be helped. Alcoholism runs in the family, and I have a permanent disability with mdd. I'm his caregiver and have no life because of him and my circumstances. I'm waiting for him to die in his sleep. I did one beautiful respectful thing for my 50th birthday this July, went on a solo vacay. I'm still hearing about it from him, not the positive aspect either but the money part. He controls what I spend so I have to lie to stay alive. I don't know how my mom put up with him. God bless her soul. Thank you for these videos. This one made me tear up because I recognize how his behavior has branched into me, and I don't like it. Please continue these videos as a psychiatrist is unaffordable, so you're my go to for advice. I also want to say, don't give up either. Even if I'm in my room alone for hours, I color, listen to music and play solitaire ony tablet. No one told me that at 50 years old that life could turn around in a positive manner but it sure takes patience, time and self respect.

I think there are lots of things about other people we don’t know. I’ve been on the receiving end of this, just to make the joke back to my ex about a new text being from her new boyfriend texting her; and it was. Sometimes people think that you do these things because they would do those things themselves. Depending on the lenses in which a psychologist, psychiatrist or doctor looks at me I’m either part crazy, “disabled”, avoidant; I am somewhat aware of how my ADHD and whatever else makes me and I try to counteract this by my actions as much as my medication. I like to think I understand some things in life. Maybe one day he will, and it will be because of you leaving - maybe he won’t. Maybe he always did and by you leaving, he could never show you. I self sabotage out of spite at times, and I have deliberately stayed single for 2 years now. It’s been pretty good to work my issues out. Quite recently I probably “walked away from forever” out of being annoyed. It’s a strange feeling. Us people, we’re just people. What does any of it really mean? Note before: you haven’t specified if you broke up or what happened. I hope you find your peace.

Hey there , I have some advices as you mentioned you need help . I have gone through this so let me share how I overcame this feeling . First of all , stop thinking about people who have wronged you . It slowly becomes a habit to think in that way and you'll doubt people who actually have good intentions for you . Second , always question your negative thoughts . Find if whatever your mind says is actually true or not . If not , stop worrying about it and if yes , talk to that person about it for whom you're getting negative thoughts . Isolating yourself can make it worse , you gotta talk and make plenty of friends so you can learn more about people . What you have learned about people is only the negative side and the positive is yet there to see . Overcome grudges , forgive and move on . Make yourself happy 💜 • Take time to relax and try to forget about what’s stressing you out • Spend time with friends • Find something to smile and laugh about • Get plenty of exercise • Meditate to clear your mind .

This was my dad, hands down. We walked around on eggshells every minute growing up. Everyone was out to get him, was his mantra. He trusted no one, including his wife and daughters. It was heaven to grow up and leave home at 19. When my mother finally divorced him, he was violent and she had to take out a restraining order. We were all afraid of him. I cut him out of my life for the last 25 years of his life. He had never changed, never mellowed. He treated me the same at 30 as he did when I was 10. I finally realized as an adult that I no longer had to put up with his sh*t. Also, therapy for him would have been an impossibility…there was nothing wrong with him, the problem was everyone else.

Dr. Tracy... I think my mom has this. She would secretly record her own mother speaking sometimes and constantly talk about the mistrust of her sisters, family members and even me. Constantly. She constantly would accuse ( search for evidence) of my stepdad cheating ( in her defense she usually did find something) as well as was paranoid to trust in doctors, therapists were a NO, and any officials. After separating myself from her for years, I found myself with a partner who was extremely emotionally abusive. The toxic relationship stressed me out so much I was in a new state with no family, depended on him for my living situation and all emotional needs.. I found myself so hurt afraid and alone. Unfortunately, I am still here. But after hiring a life coach/ mindset coach, working with a couples therapist & meditating & journaling daily for the past year- I feel a lot better. However my distrust for people, coworkers, and family members is still here. Could it be I am just mirroring the distrust of others I’ve almost been programmed to have by my mother growing up? Could I have ptsd from trusting my ex, or do I have this 😔😞 this hurts so bad

Dear Dr Tracy, I'd firstly like to personally thank you for the work you do. I appreciate the time and energy you put into making this available to your audience. I have benefited from it tremendously and owe you a great deal of gratitude for it. It's it's not too much trouble or at all possible, I would like your input on two questions I have: 1. How would you suggest managing or overcoming paranoia or worry in the supernatural context? So for instance, the idea of curses, hexes, bad luck or some supernatural force working against you. Something as minor as 'there's a broken mirror in my room which is part of a large fixture thats difficult to replace so I wonder if it's bringing me bad luck'. Or conversely something major like, 'there is 'a powerful spiritualist' living in a place you visited that you bumped heads with so maybe he did something to you'. This can also include bad experiences with 'psychics' whom have told you something disturbing that you often fixate on, palm readers, prophets, horoscopes ect. 2. How to you suggest managing or overcoming paranoia or worry to do with health and the external world. So for instance, I started to really love oatmeal in the mornings but then I came across an article about the harmful effects of herbicides used in the cultivation process so I gave it up and somewhat avoid it. Or more recently, I ordered a memory foam mattress that I was excited about because I believed it would help with soreness and arches but shortly after, I heard that the material might have harmful properties so I'm considering returning it before it's even arrived. This can also be other things like phone radiation, environmental toxins, fluoride in toothpaste, plastic drinking bottles ect. I thank you for you time and help thus far and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. God bless & kindest regards Asha

Hello Tracy! Great video. extremely insightful. How should one approach a partner with this disorder if they want to make it work?

You just described my soon to be ex down to the last detail. I left him after 16 years of marriage after he had a brief psychotic break in my opinion. I told all of our family to please help us, I knew he was suffering from this disorder. He never got the help, I left and would never return. Totally destroyed our family.

Great video. I think I experienced such behaviour from a person online and a few times in the past from people I knew. Good to know what such disorder is.

🙁 at least you can recognize this though. Many people with this disorder don’t see themselves as having a problem.

@@DrTraceyMarks It only took me 26 years to realize it - my family qre in their fifties and forties still get mad when people point it out. I am taking psilocybin right now and that's what allowed me to break out of the paranoia. I hope I can recruit my parents to try it as well. Dr. Marks, I discovered psilocybin and quit my meds because of your vid. Thank you!
