That engine has been apart before. Looks like a Dorman timing cover, which isn't bad. The plastic timing cover on these engines is supposed to be replaced every time it's disturbed. Another thing, these engines are externally balanced. The harmonic balancer is a neutral balance with a weight pressed into one of the holes in it. You need to tap that weight out of your old balancer and tap it into your new one. Be sure to tap it into the same hole on the new balancer. I put a little JB weld on mine so it won't come out someday. Its possible that the aftermarket balancers come with a new weight already installed. I have 2 brand new GM balancers, neither one has the weight installed and they didn't come with a new one.

My 1988 S-10 had a 4.3 with TBI. Ran great and lasted almost 200k miles. I sold the truck to a friend who used it for a landscaping business. The TBI was easy to work on compared to the other intakes, but not the most powerful. The best bet for those who want power is a carburetor adapter. Holley made one and it isnt' expensive.

The goop is probably from running Pennzoil. Pennzoil includes wax/paraffin wax or at least it used to. It builds up over time from the engine getting hot then cooling again & getting hot & cooling again and again and again. I found the same goop & more in my double hump 350. It helps for a more smooth mechanical operation but builds up in the corners and where oil sits. That’s what I know to be true from my experiences anyway.
@shadowopsairman1583Ай бұрын
Grand parents had a corsica, the engine took a crap, the dealer teied claiming they never changed the oil, the oil used was changed on schedule but what it was is penzoil, I will never use that or quakerstate, heck I don't like mobil1 either.

These guys can't remove a 7mm stud and they expect me to lend credence to their advice and opinion on Chevy engines? The one dude that sounds like Marge Simpson's sisters is particularly intellectual...
@dkathrens772 жыл бұрын
Hey it reminded me of some mechanic shops I hung around in back in grade school. A typical mix of salty language and demonstrated ability. A great lesson in sifting the good stuff from the mix. Yeah I had to wonder at that stud removal. I don't think they were interested in rebuilding it. That or they were going to replace all the parts we saw removed. But I did see the bumper sticker plainly visible on the back of the truck topper. I decided to focus on the motor, not the motor mouth. Missed the Pelosi comment completely.

Yeah I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic when he said, “Harbor Freight was the best.” All they (Harbor Freight via China) sell is quality reject crap. Kinda like the way TJ Max, Ross & Sam’s Club are able to sell what they have super cheap. If you look at the product close enough you’ll see there is something wrong with it.

Here is a teachable moment...at 8:57 , removing a threaded stud with vice grips, If you flip the vise grips over they will ALWAYS bite better. You pull toward the moveable jaw, the opposite of what you did. Same story for pump and Channel lock pliers, all adjustable wrenches and of course, pipe wrenches. If you doubt me, you haven't tried it. Saves a lot of aggravation. Does anyone know of aluminum heads and intake for these engines?
@mattiakers202 жыл бұрын
You realize this is the same rule for all the handtools. Its angled to help with leverage. All wrenches, combination, adjustable, if you pick up a tool and its curved its directional. He also didnt tighten nearly hard enough. Lol vicegrips 101 clamp as hard as it lets you. Also never buy harbor frieght vice grips the teeth sheer right off
@x-man50562 жыл бұрын
@@mattiakers20 Yes I do, I listed most of them. You see it a lot so I guess it's esoteric knowledge. Even "Vise Grip Garage" Has it wrong in his little opening. It does make a big difference. The guy used the very tip also which is not EVER going to bite as good on a hardened stud.

@@mattiakers20 Experience is the best teacher but not the most detailed. I have more than 50 years experience wrenching on everything I've owned including restoring a C1 Vette. But I went to an actual basic mechanics training in the Navy that taught me many of these detailed things so I have to say in this case, training was primary source of this particular one info for me, not experience.

So some idiot while changing the intake gasket left one of the rags he used to cover the holes from debris in the hole and put the intake back on. So finally found this out because we can see the rag in the cylinder when we took out the spark plug in cylinder one. And by idiot I am talking about myself. Please tell me you have a good idea at how to get that rag out.
