The ASWB Clinical Exam/Master Exam is a test that was made to determine whether or not an individual's level of knowledge of social work in a clinical setting is sufficient. You will have four hours to complete 170 multiple choice questions, including 20 pre-test questions, that test your knowledge in Human Behavior, Diversity Issues, Diagnosis and Assessment, Psychotherapy, Communication, Therapeutic Relationships, Professional Ethics, Clinical Supervision, Practice Evaluation, Service Delivery, and Clinical Practice and Management. To register, you must have at least a Master's degree from a social work program, and two years of clinical social work experience.

Hello Phil! I passed my LCSW exam on Friday after the second try with the help of your videos!!! Listening to your reframing and encouragement for positive thinking and slowing down helped me keep my anxiety in check and take my time on the test. I wrote out many of the questions and broke it down the way you taught instead of doing it in my head, and got 119 correct when I only needed 103! You've helped me achieve my dream, and I will definitely continue to pass along your videos to my coworkers also studying for their exams! Thank you so much!

Hey, Phil, I love your breaking down the question videos. I would encourage you to do more videos; they help me stay sharp as I wait to finalize a date for my exam. Thank you, Phil, your work is much appreciated.

Hello, just wanted to say I passed my exam this week. I used your method in breaking down the questions. It really helped. the majority of my questions were application questions. It was a lot of social worker in a mental health clinic. Also I passed it on the first try. I was nervous when I sat down but I calmed myself. I honestly had a smooth exam.

Hey Phillip, I have been watching all of your videos because I really feel like they are truly the only thing that is going to actually help me in studying for my MSW exam, coming April 25th, 2023. I say that because I have so much knowledge when it comes to our practice but I often second-guess my answers, which means I have the right answer first and change it to the wrong one later. You are really helping me with confidence in studying for this exam and really showing me where I need to improve and where I know I don't have to. Thank you and I plan on telling you I have passed this money-making exam.

Thank you Phil for these videos! I find them very helpful. I found the first question to be tough, if anyone has feedback it would be greatly appreciated! Answer B was eliminated for not wanting to jump right into the “work” and there being no guarantee the individual would execute the plan, however highlighted in yellow it states the main priority was to improve relationship building skills. Answer B was the only answer that explicitly focused on relationship building strategies - and after 2 months of working together - wouldn’t that be an appropriate time to work on those things? The final answer was A, connect to a peer support. Which makes sense, what a great way to build skills. But in question #2 you said you would not refer the couple to group (which i agree 100%) because the couple did not ask for that. Wouldn’t the same logic apply to #1 then? The individual was not necessarily asking to be connected to a peer, but instead, to improve relationship building skills and overcome the fears perpetuated by his past trauma. Again, any feedback is appreciated. Maybe I’m making too many comparisons to the different answers to different questions!

How can I apply the one mentioned in the Dawn Apgar book, with these questions? I am feeling a bit lost. Safety Engaging Assessing Planning Intervention Evaluation Termination
@brookeferguson9339
@brookeferguson9339 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I was using the Dawn Apgar one for a month of studying and felt like it was more of just a general guide and wasn't as applicable as this one. I felt like the Dawn Apgar one was just a way to remember the steps of the problem-solving process in general but not necessarily as useful for narrowing down answers in a question. I switched over to the SFAREAFI one and felt like it was more appropriate for actual exam taking. Now when I start actually working, the Dawn Apgar one seems to be more applicable to real life, just not as good for exam taking. Of course, that is only my opinion and to each his own but I figured I'd share my experience. Also, the way I remember Phillip's Acronym is (S)an (F)ranciso (AREA) (F)eels (I)nviting. I made this up myself because I hadn't seen anyone else make one up yet haha best of luck to everyone reading this! I see a pass in our future!!

For question 4, I understand why you're saying not to "add to the question" or assume there is abuse, but I took a practice exam where every time DCF was even a possible answer option, that was it. No "explore", "assess", "gather further info"... DCF report was the instant go-to due to safety. Advice on this? When to tell the difference? Thanks! Love your videos.

I think for this question there is not a clear sign of abuse, nor do we know exactly what dad means by his statement, so we can’t assume and we must clarify what dad means by “taking things in his own hands”.....In the trainings materials i have if abuse/danger is not clear you have to clarify/assess further

Erika Young I see why there would be confusion. I do think the actual exam may be different from your practice questions. I took the ASWB practice exam and most of the questions where abuse was ambiguous the rationale was first clarify then report. But if there are clear signs report immediately

so for number 5 I get why is the correct answer but at the tail end of the question it says continue to allow people to attend, as if he/she could prevent people from attending because of the bias but because in the question it doesn't say he/she is acting on it that's it.

Thanks for all of these videos! super helpful. One question: In using the acronym, are we always supposed to answer with the answer that comes first in the process-- e.g. SAFETY before FEELINGS? Thanks again!

It’s crazy how they are making the last question-answer questionable in Texas since the bias TX Govenor has passed a ridiculous new law for SW to reject helping persons of the LBGTQ community. I can’t figure how they thought to but into SW territory and policies... but I’m sure TX law shouldn’t effect the testing answers for the exam... but terrible policy passed indeed

Did you write these yourself? The phrasing of some of these questions seems off, such as "what would be the most likely thing the social worker will do" is asking what someone might do in a situation, not what is most ethically correct or in line with the tenants of social work. Furthermore "ignoring bias" is not something anyone can do, that's why it's inherent bias. The ASWB would never word a question like that, as social workers need to take note of their bias and actively make sure their actions are not tainted by implicit bias.

I do construct my own questions. The questions on the actual exam will be FIRST/NEXT/BEST/MOST and should questions, therefore the verbiage aligns with how the exam is structured. As for why the question is stating to ignore the bias and allow for the community members to continue attending the facility is because the social worker in the scenario is NOT directly interacting with the members. The social worker in the scenario owns the facility and therefore, their bias would not have any impact on the members admittance to the facility. However, that does not mean they would not process it if it were to become a barrier. I hope that helps 💙

@@PhilintheGaps Are you suggesting that the owner or policy member cannot impart bias into policy/workflow, and that a social worker needs to work directly with clients for them to be affected by bias? That fails to recognize institutional and systemic bias, which are policies in place created by those with inherent bias. One cannot and should NEVER ignore bias, and a questions answer on the test would never suggest ignoring bias as a correct answer, especially for an individual charged with managing/owning a community center. I don't mean to be harsh, but I think you are doing a disservice to people looking for questions/study material and social workers alike by creating and answering your own questions, when there are PLENTY of actual ASWB questions available to you to use. Unfortunately, Q 5 is merely the tip of the iceburg. Q 1 - This answer lacks reasoning within the prompt. The question says the social worker is in a private practice, yet the answer suggests there is a "peer support group at the agency", which is never mentioned in the prompt. Peer support groups are typically based around managing (often shared forms of) trauma. At no point does the prompt or the answer reflect the nature of the peer support group as assisting in relationship building - as such, there is no reason for us to believe the peer support group will help the clients relationship skills. Furthermore, the answer is incorrect because sending the client to another group, especially one that lacks a full description, would never be an answer because it adds a degree of separation between social worker and client. If the prompt suggested there was a peer support group that worked specifically with relationship building skills, it might be correct. However, because the question lacks this information, the answer lacks rationalization. Therefore, roleplay would be the only correct answer here, because it adequately addresses the concerns of the client and enables self-determination while also not adding degrees of separation by putting them in an ill-defined peer support group which might not address the issues the client wishes to work on. Q 2 - At no point are past relationships mentioned in the question, so your answer cannot be correct. You say yourself in Q 4 that it is important to use clues from the prompt to reach your answer - however, the answer of "inquiring about past relationships" has no pertinence to the question/prompt, nor to the relationship dynamic issues the couple is facing. The answer also assumes there are previous relationships not mentioned in the prompt, which is poor social work practice. Prior relationship anxiety or being hurt in by previous partners is not mentioned at all in your question, and thereby cannot be a correct answer. The answer MUST be at least alluded to in the question. I hope you consider not writing your own questions for future lessons, or at least consult someone else on proper question creation/other social workers before putting things like this out, because these questions are not up to standard.

@@davidjacobi1846 I can understand your concerns and I am always open to feedback. However, by law people are not actually able to distribute and/or reproduce ACTUAL ASWB exams, so I apologize if anyone convinced you otherwise. Additionally, it does not sound like my videos and style are the right ones for you, but I wish you luck on studying and preparing for your exam. @@PhilintheGaps Super fair point - I meant ASWB approved practice questions you can find in various practice books like in the Apgar book. Full disclosure - I have already passed the LMSW exam and only found out about your videos from a reddit post from someone who has FAILED the exam TWICE after using your videos as a study source and was asking for tips on how to pass. I hope you keep my feedback in mind when constructing new questions.
