Most folks realize that healing a piercing is far more work then getting a piercing. But what exactly does that work look like? What can we expect when we heal a piercing, and what's normal? Todays video aims to explain all that, and helpfully make you better prepared for the healing process of getting pierced!

I had friends with garbage jewelry in their cartilage piercings... Miraculously fully heal in 6 months, meanwhile I'm over here with titanium jewelry and using saline and being gentle... Usually 12-24 months to heal anything 😅

As always I so appreciate your content! I have a philtrum piercing that's coming up on 10 months and while I'd say it's 99.8% healed there's still a bit of secretion happening. Not a lot at all, and I've had zero problems with it beyond that, but it does feel discouraging at times. Hopefully it will reach the 100% healed stage soon!

Having a swelling roller coaster and hypertrophic scarring. Not concerning, according to my piercer, but I'd be freaking out without her. There's so much information that just doesn't show up on Google or in forums

i always get so excited for your uploads!! :) would you consider doing a video on piercing with hoops and all the factors that go into that? it seems overly demonized because so many low-quality give it a bad name. :-) also, i took your advice you gave me in a comment to use the pointy cosmetic q-tips to clean my piercings and OH MY GOD have i seen a huge improvement! thank you as always!

Honestly all of my piercings besides my tongue and philtrum were done with a hoop (so that's my lip, nose, and conch) and they all healed perfectly! While I'm not a piercer I do agree hoops can be unfairly demonized. A professional piercer named Jef Saunders wrote a really good opinion piece about the topic, I think the title of the blog post is Rings are Not the Devil? He did my lip all the way back in 2007 with a hoop and it healed flawlessly.

This might be weird but I just want to get it out hahah. Every time I get a cartilage piercing it’s like my body doesn’t realise there is a piercing there until 8-12 days later. I will literally have almost no swelling and zero secretions and then one day it will just become painful and poof up and start oozing. The pain will then go on for about three days and then it’s like the healing “starts” for real. Have you ever heard of this before or is it maybe a normal reaction?
@Lynn_Loheide
@Lynn_Loheide Жыл бұрын
This is honestly really normal! A lot of folks experience this almost delayed immune system response to their piercings as they heal. Very normal and nothing to be worried about as long as they are healing well.

14:23 i wish i knew this when i first started getting piercings!! i got my second lobe piercings before i was educated and all i cared about was changing them out as soon as possible with cute jewelry. as soon as i hit the 2 month mark (because that was the “healing time” i kept hearing everywhere, even if my own weren’t healed at that point) i changed them out immediately, often, and with very low quality jewelry. my ears got really fucked up because of that, and got irritated and infected for a whole YEAR after i got them! (even after i put in titanium labrets and left them in the rest of the time). even now, two years later, i baby them worried they still aren’t healed (they definitely are😅)

The thing thats made me go huh weird about my bodys healing is that the left side seems more reactive more crust light bleeding for longer when my nostrils where done my eyes watered more with the left. I just expect that at this point so of course I had my snug done on the left ragweed season his not being kind to it.

Lovely video as always Lynn! I'm sure many first-time piercees will get lots out of this :) I was wondering if you could maybe talk more about the differences in piercing bumps? I love learning about everything piercing, and I've noticed that the bumps I got on my daith (from it moving around a ton) look very different from the time I got a moisture bump on my conch (from a big cluster in the unhealed piercing trapping moisture underneath) and I was curious if you can tell from the look of certain bumps what the likely cause is

For me, if I pierced properly for my ears, if I pierce properly for my ears, and I go straight to hoop right away, which is the proper for my ears, because my skin and my my ears, that is what my ears are like, so they, they heal really well with hoops they heal really well with curved barbell, but they do not deal with at all studs any sort of straight jewelry. My ear will not heal, so if if if I go right to that hoop or right to that curved barbell Meir, a good, 95% of the time will heal within the timeframe so these are example if I pierced with a hoop, my helix will heal within six months to a year. If I don’t and I get a stud put in that’s a bit of a different story. My helix takes literally no joke. I got my helix done with a stud, a straight barbell stud in my ear and I had my oil pocket and everything happened to two months into having the piercing so of course I had to take the stuff out, put a hoop in it, and it got to a point where my ear was trying to swallow the jewellery and everything so I had to get it out immediately and change it right away which I did but that piercing finally just healed. Got it done in February last year it is April this year and it finally healed this month of April finally finally healed it took literally because they put a star in my ear, which is something that my ear does not accept because I had an oil pocket formed by the stud like a cyst. Basically, it literally took 12 months. +3 more so it took 15 months to get my helix to heal it took 15 months because the piercer for my body, and for my skin put a stud in my helix, which was the worst thing she could’ve done because it caused a literal pocket of like a cyst pustule pocket because of the stud, and it was only in there for two months the stud that was it and I cleaned that piercing religiously morning and night twice a day everything keeping my my pillow, keeps everything clean everything I was even sleeping on a travel pillow and it still took 15 months to heal it out, because there was a stud in it

I just recently got pierced for the first time since I was 19 (I am 32 now), and I found the same thing happening to my piercing that happened back then. For some reason back then it was "cool" to just have one stretched lobe on one ear instead on both so I have had my "main-lobe" stretched, and later one lobe and upper lobe beside it that was your normal 1,6 mm. I had a really hard time healing all of these except for the one I started stretching at one point. It was way to early because I was impatient, and I had a good amount of swelling for some time before I reached the 4mm stretch. My piercer would have killed me if he knew lol. But then it still healed quicker than my other two that I healed regularly. So... Over a decade later, my stretched lobe which was up to 10mm shrank back to about 4 over the years. Had an x-ray last year and had to take everything out, lost my clickers and my stretched piercing was the only thing that didn't close up. So I decided to stretch it back up to 10mm, and get a lobe on the other ear to finally have symmetrical stretched piercings. This piercing although I regularly cleaned it, gave me a hard time with swelling. It got OK-is after the 4-6 weeks mark my piercer predicted it to heal up enough for a jewelery change, but it was still red and tender, especially on the plate-side of the barbel. The bead-side was almost healed up. So... I remembered what I did when I was 19. I took out my barbel for the first time and shoved in my spiral- taper and was surprised that the 2mm piercing I got already stretched to about 3mm. All the while I cleaned my barbel in 99% Alcohol and my ear with the sailing solution. I left the taper in for one day and one night. My piercing really was not that happy it started getting red and oozing a good bit. BUT once I changed it back to the Barbel and got one night of good sleep the swelling and tenderness has gone away now and is so much better than before. What I suspect is that my piercings heal so much better with airflow, which the backside and the inside of the canal wherent getting. By stretching it a bit temporarily all the incapsuled secretion was forced out a bit, and the canal was widened enough that some air and saline solution could do their magic. I also put in the barbel backwards this time so the back of my piercing would get a bit more air. To be clear I am not encouraging anyone to do this because that could have backfired greatly! It's just what somehow worked for my weird body.

Last year I just had to recently take out a barbell straight barbell due to again and oil pocket forming and luckily I knew what was happening and I knew if I didn’t get that poop put in and that barbell taken out I could’ve lost my helix piercing now I still have it. It is fully healed now, but yes, I had to take the studs out same with my conch piercings. I had to take the studs out now they’re healing now they’re happy now they’re healthy. They’re healing well but they didn’t look too good a little while ago due to studs in the moment, the piercer took out the stud from my ears. I literally gushed out just oil like pure, gross disgusting nasty. Stuff right out of my ear literally and it wasn’t new stuff. It was stuff that has been sitting there for a year and it’s not because I didn’t for lack of cleaning my ear piercings or anything like that. It was because of the stud it’s something to do with the studs it’s like the studs cause this constriction like it might piercings can’t breathe, and then it causes an oil pocket, and then the oil pocket grows and grows and grows, and then the jewellery basically gets almost sucked into my ear and creates a crater and oh God it is so bad it does it every time I wear studs no matter the the the metal and it doesn’t matter and that’s why I can’t wear studs at all not for healing not for after healing Either.

Hi Lynn, great video! Sometimes it’s not enough to just know the steps of taking care of your piercings. My wife is having a few set backs with her first piercing and I keep reassuring her that outside of infection, everything is normal 😅 I have a question about sleeping: I’m someone who aspires for piercings like cheek piercings and cheek dermals and forehead surface work but how do you sleep with all that? Sincerely, a chronic stomach sleeper.

I am always consistent with my aftercare always especially cause I have overly sensitive years. It’s really easy to piss them off literally like the like I could have them clean in the morning and then a dog hair gets in one of my piercings and this is it right off I can do that within me just throughout the day and then I go and I clean my ears for the 92 or whatever and then there’s my piercing irritated as fuck because they’re so I’ve learned to be very consistent with my aftercare and not give up when it comes to clean my piercings I’ve just I’ve learned to be consistent and always clean

Hey Lynn, I got my angel bites done like 2 months ago and thought they were totally healed. Then I got a viral infection fever and fever blister right next to the left one flared up and is so crusty and is oozing lymph and scabbing over to the side. When I sea salt soak and clean the piercing it seems to open up the scab next to it. So I’ve been trying to not sea salt soak and just wash in the shower. I’m so sick of it cuz it makes the piercing look so gross. Have any tips for me? I love your videos

I don’t get irritation bumps now I only get these when I wear studs and this is why I can’t wear them is why I can’t wear studs no matter the metal I can’t wear them, but I guess was called oil pockets that also can become oil bumps as soon as I switch it to hoops now with my helix I had that I had an oil pocket caused by the stud then once I took the stuff out and I put the hoop in my ear Decided to heal, and then the oil pocket pushed itself out. Eventually it went away, and I don’t want to have it, but this is why I don’t wear studs because studs are constricting for me, and they cause basically got a pocket inside my ear and the suffocate the piercing studs suffocate my piercings studs are just really bad honestly for me. I don’t know why but studs are no good no matter the metal they’re no good.

Granted yes, I still have my helix but it is very sensitive so the cold compress it off real good it’s now sensitive for the rest of my life because of a stud being there so I do have to keep an ion it clean it make sure it’s clean. I don’t ever forget to clean it because if I do when I get like a dog hair crusty, whatever from it, it might one of my other piercings that’s healing. It will piss it off, so it’s a really pissy bitchy piercing.

@alishalegrand6139
@alishalegrand6139 4 ай бұрын
Yes you’re trying to tell your body. This is a good splinter. This is the OK splinter. This is the we wanna keep it splinter now my problem with my years and I’ve had this all my life is when I get pierced with studs my ear seems to not understand that so my ear takes studs as hell no fuck no I am not gonna take that. I am not going to heal with that. I am going to eat it right out of your ear. I’m gonna migrate it right now I’m gonna push it out. I’m gonna do everything I can to get it out of there and that’s what studs do and it doesn’t matter with the metal or the material that’s used it’s not lack of aftercare or Anything like that basically, it’s just something with my body something with studs doesn’t my body doesn’t compute studs as safe. Basically they see studs as health risk and so for me to get my body to heal a piercing in to accept it I have to pierce with hoops and curve barbells and I can never Pierce with studs. I tried to do it multiple times and every time I’ve done it it’s literally gotten to the point where I’ve had to take out the side and put the hoop in multiple times loaves, helixes, car any cartilage any piercing I believe even my nose was the same way it’s just tell my body reacts to studs we thought it was a metal allergy but it’s not because it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter it’s gold it doesn’t matter. If it’s surgical steel it doesn’t matter if it’s titanium it doesn’t matter basically what the study is it won’t matter because my ear don’t care my body don’t care every stud is a foreign object and every stud is a threat to my system and my health and that’s what my body sees so for me I unfortunately have to pierce with hoops and curves barbells, and that’s the only way I get myself to heal just recently I had to take out my conch piercings, because my ears literally. Trying to push them out and basically rejected them and then they wouldn’t heal and they are a year old and they’re just healing now and that’s because the piercer saved it in time and put hoops in my ears but for some reason when I have studs in my skin in my slushy lobe cartilage anywhere even in my nose my body rejects them right away and attacks them. Basically my my system attacks studs as if it’s the most worst thing you could ever put in the body and it’s just a taxi so bad to the point it, it literally causes like a. Pasfield nasty ass pocket even though I don’t play with my piercings I don’t touch my piercings. I clean them twice a day. I keep them very clean doesn’t matter because my ear doesn’t see it that way studs are a piece of jewellery that my body will never except ever not for healing process not even for after healing it’s just a part of my life. It’s a weird ear problem that my grandma has my mom has everybody in my family has that as a girl basically and it’s weird we don’t know what it is or why it occurs we don’t understand it, but it doesn’t except studs my ears won’t do it

Curved barbells are OK. Hoops are OK, and my ear except those but as for studs, my ears will not know where my ears will not accept them at all no matter the metal my ears will not accept it. Don’t even get me started with nickel because it’s even worse but not surgical steel not gold not titanium nothing so all studs are An absolute Knogo

By peers properly from my ears if I go hoop directly from the start in my helix oh yeah, that fucker will heal in six months. Oh yeah, it’ll be done in six months but if you fuck up and you put studs where they don’t belong, you can forget it that piercing is gonna take almost 2 fucking years that person‘s gonna take like 15 months or longer and you can forget it because even after teal, it’s been again sensitive sensitive for another year to two years and that’s if you fuck up and pierce my ears with studs directly, that’s where the piercer. goes wrong with my ears if you put studs in my ears straight barbells oh yeah, you could forget it that fucking Pearson‘s taking 15 months or longer to heal and then you got another possibly yay so long months to a year or two of sensitivity and I get that for about a year to two years where I have sensitivity and that’s where my ear piercing likes to be a spaz and it likes to be sensitive with all different fucking things so it takes a real long ass time to get it calm down but if you go directly hoop right away In my helix or in my lobes are in my conch oh yeah, that fucker will normal but they didn’t do that with my conscience so that’s why it’s a year old not healed and he living now healing now because I have hoops in it but weren’t at all showing any signs of healing it when they were already a year old so now it’s corrected. I have hoops in my conch now, so it’s all good now, but if you do not put hoops directly in my ears, you can forget it that fucker is gonna take so long to heal. It’s a fight and that’s when you’re like that all the time and it takes for fucking ever.
