Hello, Master of the gen 3 hemi. I have a quick question. Today when I started my 2011 Chrysler 300c (173k miles) I noticed what sounded like a pretty loud lifter tick for the first 3 seconds, but then it went away. Is this anything I should be worried about? Should I soon replace my lifters using one of your tutorials, or do you think it could be something else? Thanks for your time.

I want to point out, that you can actually put the old pre-eagle MAP sensor into the eagle intake, and won't need to change the connector. I tried this earlier. Both sensors are slightly different but the tube that goes into the manifold is the same.

The pre-Eagle 5.7L they used in that comparison was handicapped by the carbureted intake manifold in my opinion. Unlike older small blocks, the Gen 3 Hemi ports and chambers (as well as GM LS and Ford Modulars) were designed in flow analysis programs to only use port fuel injection and a dry manifold. Introducing fuel to the air at the port is critical to getting a good mixture and seeing the best potential for these engines. Using a carburetor and a generic dual plane manifold is a lot simpler, but you're leaving a lot on the table. The Eagle heads are definitely a massive improvement over the early 5.7L and on par with the 6.1L heads, but I think the manifold exaggerated the difference significantly. They should have used a 2005-2008 car manifold for a better comparison.

I've got a couple of questions but first some background. I was a Chrysler advisor for approx 10 years and finally escaped from industry about 18 months ago. Also, I'm not a typical advisor who knows nothing about cars. I've done all the work on this and many other cars I've owned. I have an 06 300 CSRT which is on it 4th set of lifters. However, last year when the 3rd set failed (always #5 intake lifter) it took out the cam and also spun a cam bearing. So, I pulled the the engine and used it as an excuse to do a 426. Sent the bottom end to our machine shop and had them perform all the machining and assem the bottom end. Put it all together and it ran like a top. Then around 3k miles on it I started noticing what sounded like a slight rod knock. UNBELIEVABE!!!! So I parked it considered committing hara-kiri seppuku! Anyway, now that its "cooling off" here (houston) I'm finally mentally ready to pull it and see WTF is going on. So my questions are 1) do you know if the Eagle cyl heads flow better over the stock casting SRT heads? 2) do you know of a way to safely pull & reinstall the crank (assuming I just have a bad bearing and no other damage) without pulling the heads? 3) can you give me the torque specs on assembling the bottom end as I've never done this and no longer have access to dealerconnect.com Thanks for any info!!!

One more thing that i think may be handy. I thought the earlier like 03 to 08 model heads had a chance (likely when overheated a crap ton) of dropping the seats. Havn't heard anything about that and the new eagle heads. So more flow intake and exhaust, better compression ratio and a more stout head. Got me thinking about my poor old 06 Daytona Charger. Its not bad, but its no power monster.

Do you have any insight on this engine swap: 2019 ram 5.7 etorque into a 2012 ram 5.7? Of course the etorque will be removed. I believe the crank sensor, knock sensor, flex plate, timing cover and oil cooler are some of the differences. I just completed a full rebuild of my original motor thanks to your videos. But unfortunately I still have a small oil leak into my coolant. Heads went to shop and came back good. Trucks runs great no overheating after 300 miles and ltft are all in spec. No coolant in oil. I suspect a small leak in the block.

Great video and I think this eagle swap is going to get you a lot of visitors. (I'd put eagle head swap or something into the title). I do think the 09+ pistons are different though. Not sure if the compression height or even dome volume is different, but the tops look different, and I believe the pre-09 use a 1.5mm top ring, but I think the 09+ runs a 1.2mm top ring. If I was throwing the eagle heads on and not doing an entire refresh, then I would just run the stock pistons though, no matter what kind you got. I filed my first set of rings for my LS build (I'm using 0.030" because it's going to see a lot of boost). One tip I recommend is to file the set and then leave them in the cylinder you filed them for. Because each cylinder is going to be slightly different. Also, go slow when filing, and only file one side of the ring as the factory end will always be more square than the edge you do. For my LS set of rings, the top moly ring was very hard metal, so it took a lot of grinding to size it. But the second iron ring was much softer, so be prepared to take off gap much faster with a softer second ring. You should also rotate the ring filer in such a way that the grinding wheel pushes "down" when you file, so it doesn't try to lift the ring as you go. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Just did a quick check on RockAuto and it showed the pistons as different, with the eagle having a shorter compression height. If you live in a state that requires emissions testing then this isn't a great option. You can actually drill the cylinder head to make the EGR functional, but this means you'd have to use your original intake manifold, which means purchasing the adapter plates from MMX.

So if the int/exh ports are larger on the eagle heads and give better air flow but you can use the stock manifolds or aftermarket headers from the earlier 03-08s, shouldn't there be some port matching or else restriction can occur? Also, are head bolts TTY bolts? Why reuse them if they are previous bolts and stretched?
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 18 күн бұрын
You're correct, the exhaust manifolds would benefit from being matched. The intake manifolds are not interchangeable so those ports will match the correct manifold. The head bolts are not torque to yield therefore they ARE reusable. This comes directly from the Chrysler service information. One reason there is confusion on this topic is because the bolts are torque to angle, which is just an alternate method of torquing them down. Think of it this way. If you were torquing a bolt to 55ft lbs, it's that any different than telling someone to torque the bolt to 30ft lbs, and then an additional 30 degrees? Both would result in the final torque number being 55, it doesn't mean that the one you finished torquing down by angle is now stretched and can't be used. I hope that clarifies it. 👍

Hey, check the CCs of the heads relative to the pistons on the 2 different engine designs. The eagle ENGINE is 10.5:1, but the engines use different pistons. If you take the eagle heads and swap them to a pre-eagle engine, the compression ratio is 11:1 or higher, which could really be a problem if you're going to boost your engine. I can't find reliable data for piston dish/deck clearance volume for both engines to calculate comp ratio.

Love your info but you did miss a little info. Eagle and 6.1 not quite the same head. Basically they are similar but not identical Also: Have you double checked the math on the compression ratio? Popular theory is, without a thick head gasket you’ll be up around 12:1. I’ve not done one myself but a lot of info out there about this. Just curious….

If egr is really drilled and not cast, is it 90° bend drilled? I need the egr. But I think that some ram trucks had eagle heads with egr too.
@ReignitedAuto

The EGR hole is drilled from the front of the head, and from the exhaust flange side, where the two holes intersect is where the 90 degrees happens. I've heard of some eagle head vehicles with EGR, but still haven't seen any yet. I'd love to see some pictures if you find one.

Wonderful, thanks a lot for chiming in so fast. Actually I haven't seen one either, just read they are out there. Well, I am going to drill it. Looks like eagle heads are better compared to 6.1 heads, at least from what I have read. Problem is, I haven't found a single dyno comparing them. Some say closed chamber (eagle) design is better for power output, some say open chamber are better for emissions...But there are numbers missing. I am torn between the two yet am inclined toward eagle ones as they should have higher port velocity. At the same though I want to stroke the engine and have no idea how that complements the build.@@ReignitedAuto

@compprufus something to be careful about: if you're using the eagle heads and drilling the pet for the EGR, where are you going to run the tube that goes into the intake? There is no provision for that on the newer intake manifolds as far as I'm aware, and you cannot use your original intake with the eagle head swap unless you're using adapter plates.
@compprufus
@compprufus 6 ай бұрын
I am aware of that. I was thinking first about 6.1 manifold since it's aluminum and I as a hobbyist am more proficient with alu welding than plastic welding :D but then heard of 6.4 intake being better match. I was thinking of epoxying in a barb (though I admit, I have no idea how are the gases let inside pre eagle intake manifold (my car is constantly being serviced)) and connect the hose onto that barb. As much shaggy solution that looks like, open up a Motortend, you'll find an article about somebody fixing port runners with epoxy to raise the port velocity. Then there is the other solution and that is to mill myself an adapter plate between heads and 5.7 intake but that doesn't seem like much fun. @@ReignitedAuto

@compprufus there's no question it can be done. For myself is much rather just eliminate the EGR and get a tuner to shut it off for good, but I live in a state without emissions testing so it's easy for me to say that.

So you don’t need to use double head gaskets? From compression being raised? That’s what I’ve seen on forums 🤔🤔🤔

Are the lifters for A 03-08 hemi The same as the lifters in the 09 and newer? Aka are there any differents in The pre eagle lifters versus the eagle lifters. Especially in regards to the MDS lifters.

Theu are basically the same until 2016 when they updated the lifter roller bearings to a thicker style. The updated versions are the only ones available now and they'll fit any Hemi engine back to 2003. 👍

the eagle heads are 20cc less than the pre eagles.. the eagle heads are oval shaped and not a true hemispherical head design.. according to chrysler, the intake runners were improved on the eagle engines. the eagle heads are said to flow 14 percent better than the pre eagles, BUT, as I said, the eagle heads have 20 cc less volume.. so can u explain how the eagle heads are better than the pre eagle heads? in my mind, they about equal out, due to the chamber volume vs the flow?
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 8 ай бұрын
The less volume is in the combustion chamber, not in the flow capacity. Less volume in the combustion chamber=higher compression
@randy1ization
@randy1ization 8 ай бұрын
not trying to argue, just to understand.. ok if you have higher compression, but a smaller explosion when the fuel is ignited , due to a smaller combustion chambers holding less fuel mixture, , how can it create more horsepower, also the higher the combustion pressures, the more difficult to ignite the gas mixture.
@randy1ization
@randy1ization 8 ай бұрын
what it looks like to me, is in a way, they robbed peter, to pay paul.. they went to the oval shaped combustion chamber, to be able to cut more material out of the head to get more flow. raising the compression ratio, and the flow would seem to create a better gas mileage situation to me, rather than more power.. Ive seen s 1/4 miles tests between stock chrysler 300s with the pre eagle, and eagle engines, and the eagles are about 1 second quicker.. the vid said the eagle engine is around 30 pounds heavier.. the pre eagles had MDS, but no VVT.. The eagles have VVT but no MDS... to me it seems that the VVT is likely what is giving the eagle engines the slightly better performance, and not the changes to the cylinder heads and intake... your thoughts? .
@randy1ization
@randy1ization 8 ай бұрын
also the fact that the oval shaped combustion chambers are not really hemispherical in design, brings alot of questions.. its common knowledge that the true hemi head design has been unmatched in performance since the 1950s, and as far as I know, dodge still is not allowed to compete in nascar, due to its design,, in the 70s dodge was banned, because nobody could keep up with them..
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 8 ай бұрын
@randy1ization the eagle engines do have MDS as well. I think the eagle engines are an upgrade in every way. The VVT definitely takes advantage of the increased flow from the cylinder heads, but it's a combination of a lot of small changes that make the eagle engines better. For outright reliability I like the pre eagle engines, but any metric of power and the eagle runs away with it.
