Did you know that your back muscles may weaken during pregnancy? The spine goes through many changes in order to support a growing baby. The prenatal spine has more exaggerated curves to help stabilize an expanding uterus. It takes time for the spine to reorganize itself back to its pre-pregnancy form. This leaves the postnatal spine vulnerable and unstable. In addition, caring for an infant requires lots of feeding, changing and carrying which causes the shoulders to fall forward.
Strengthening the whole back gives the postpartum person support as the spine returns to it's pre-pregnancy shape. Building up these muscles will assist the postnatal parent in the everyday activities of caring for an infant as well. I created a short postnatal yoga video focused on strengthening the back. Join me for this nourishing practice💗.
A folded blanket or towel is an optional prop for this sequence. It is important to wait at least six weeks postpartum to resume your yoga practice. Please consult with your care provider to ensure physical activity is suitable for you at this time.
