An anterior pelvic tilt is when your pelvis is rotated forward, which forces your spine to curve.
Bharatanatyam dancers often experience pain in the lower back due to wrong alignment of spine and pelvis while dancing.

The idea of neutral spine is quite new and interesting to me. Almost all of my previous gurus have told us to lean forward when we stand in samapada for aesthetic purposes.

As long as leaning forward is not causing harm to your health and body, it is fine. Unfortunately our bodies are different and there is no "one solution fits all". I have personally come across many students and dancers who suffer from anterior pelvic tilt for the very reason. I would any day put health ahead of aesthetics and advice my students to have their spine neutral if it alleviates/prevents lower back/hip pain :)

Thank you for spreading the awareness. There is no clarity regarding this, and know awareness regarding its side effects for especially women-pregnancy etc. I avoided maintaining postures while learning bharatanatyam completed senior grade, as I didn't wanted to be deformed permanently and many young children innocently practice. (I was a headache I guess for my guru😬😆, somehow managed, she was kind).

I think no one could explain better than this❤️.. postures are very important us to hold!! Usually many of us dance while holding a posture also... I think the balancing vinyasa and core workout which u had taught me in ur workshop will give me better postures🤔 plz do tell me akka...so that I can concentrate 👍thank u akka❤️.

Nice Tips and Exercises. I have been doing most of this regularly, but I had missed the part of pushing the bellybutton downards so that back touches the ground. It does normally, but I was not consciously forcing it. It sometimes does not touch when we life one leg vertical and one leg downwards, or some time when we bring both leg down near the floor an inch and lift it again. I shall take notice of this and adjust accordingly. I believe faulty posture while standing can result in back pain too. Thanks for all the explanations

Can you share “must do” exercises for a dancer on the day’s we don’t practice dance. If you can include all the important ones like “knee” , “abdomen” “ aramandi “ , it will be helpful as a regular alternate day routine

What's an alternate day routine? Regardless of whether I workout or not, I practice dance and vice versa.. I don't think you should exercise only on the days you don't practice dance.. Infact you must practice dance everyday and workout everyday.. of course with a rest day to give your body ample time to recover.

Hi akka, I recently restarted kuchipudi and been practising almost everyday. I feel a tiny bump below my kneecap and slight pain but that's not troubling me as of now. Is this common? And what exercise should I do to make it normal?
