Helping pre-wire a buddy's basement as my current project. After having done my own homes a few different times (two pre built homes, one basement finishing project), you give the most practical and useable advice I've ever come across. Instead of me explaining to him all the things I've learned through each project, you summarize everything in your video series. If a picture is worth a thousand words, your videos are worth a novel. EXCELLENT pro tips!!!

Great videos! I have prewired other houses but picked up some good ideas. Like the loose conduit detail, we did the full gray schedule 40 conduit glued and sealed to boxes.. but this approach is probably all that is needed and will save a ton of time.

This clears up a bunch of questions I had. I would love to see a video about your order of operations, general guidelines to follow( mapping pathways, common placements for boxes and what not to do!) And terminology. Verbiage seems to vary from region to region. I Really liked your explanation of why you were thinking 3 steps ahead for every pathway. Thank you for the great walkthrough!

just noticing that some of the installed wall plates protrude past where the gyprock is fixed to the studs, in Australia the gyprocker would bend these back out of the way to glue gyprock, which obviously makes it hard to locate the screws thru the mounting plates at final installation, so guys you really need to address this at prewire stage making sure that the edge is a flush finish with the edge of the stud, same as the power outlet boxes. wiring regulations are obviously different between countries with separations from electricity cabling / plumbing pipes, another option is to install short lengths of correctly coloured conduit (yes colour is important for identification to trades) over or around electric cables/pipes. there is always more then 1 way to install cables correctly, what can look good is not necessarily correct ! But all in all you have done a decent job.
@avdreamer82507 ай бұрын
Yes, regulations are different in other countries. My installs are only in the USA, so checking local regulations are always important and highly recommended. I try to remember to comment on this, but I don't remember to do this every time. I just assume that people will do this for their own installations. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the tips. Good info, would be great if you could list where to get the orange conduit. Great tip on multiple Cat6 cables per room. You never know when one will get pinched/kinked, etc. and fail.

I am curious why 3 cat6 cables per room? I am wiring up my house this week and debating if more than 1 is needed. Also debating on coax, I prewired my last house with coax and ended up never using any of it over 10 years.

Very helpful and detailed video. What is the typical height for TV outlets if you do not know what size of TV you are planning to install? Thank you and keep on the good work.
@avdreamer8250 Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late replay, had to step away for a few weeks. I usually put the outlet above where the TV mount will be installed. Most TVs are angle down a bit. Having the outlet above the mount gives you a little more space for the plug. Depending on the TV, a recessed outlet is a good idea. Thanks

Good video! . I would like to know how much should I charge for run a low voltage pre wire project like you guys doing. I know about low voltage but I don’t know how should I price out. Thx
@avdreamer82502 жыл бұрын
That's a loaded question. What you charge is up to you and the what the market will bear. Typically $50 to $150 and hour has been the standard. It mite be a bit higher now with high gas and other higher expenses.

Great video and good info. Is it best to run all coax lines outside to where the demarc box will be, as opposed to running just one outside and splitting the rest inside? A cable installer told me this was the preferred method to avoid the signal loss that comes from splitting.
@avdreamer82503 жыл бұрын
Hi Donnie, That's a loaded question. It's not a question about what line runs to what location. It's about multiple factors. What's the signal coming into the house? Internet, OTA or cable TV. What type of coax is being ran, RG59(old school), RG6, dual shield, Quad shielded etc. But the most important thing is, how is it being split. Non powered or powered splitters. Splitters with pre-amp or no pre-amp. To make things simple, over the past 20+ years of doing installs. I always run all coax cables to one location in the house, then use powered distribution blocks with non-powered splitters with short jumpers going to powered amplifiers with pre-amps for long runs. There is a lot of signal loss with coax, but this can be minimized with quality coax(quad shielded RG6 is best for OTA TV, cable, satellite and internet) and the right mix of high quality signal amplification. This has served me well over the years. Thanks for your question. Please subscribe if you haven't already. Thanks
@donnielassiter42763 жыл бұрын
@@avdreamer8250 Guess I should have specified... I have a cable provider (Spectrum) who will be doing the install at the demarc. I'm the homeowner doing some pre-wiring myself. It will be quad shield RG6. I'm pretty sure Spectrum would use powered splitters outside the house.

I typically run 3 cat6 and 1 or 2 RG6 cables to each location. This ensures plenty of future expansion options. Remember, you only get one shot at prewiring your home. Better to be a little overkill than run into problems later. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the video. To late for part two for me because they just finished hanging the sheet rock today. Thats Ok, your Part one was a big help for wiring up my home theater last week. Do you have issues with the sheet rock guys by leaving the wires hanging out of the box? I was worried about that so I zipped tied them into a tight blundle and left it carefully looped up in side the stud wall and hung the whole bundle with a piece of bailing wire so I could pull it our later. Maybe I did not have to do that? Good Idea on taking pictures. I walked around the rooms taking a video before sheet rock. I already found at least one box that was covered by the sheet rock guys and was able to locate it off the video.
