In this Product Review Video, I take you through Scale 75's new Artist Acrylic heavy body line. They are interesting paints that could be a good gateway from the world of traditional miniature paints into heavy body acrylics. Hope you enjoy!

Great review. I've been enjoying these paints quite a bit, and I've also noticed that they dry considerably more slowly than most paints so they're very easy to wet blend even with thinner layers.

I had backed up 36 tubes of this stuff. I’m still learning but I love the way this stuff glazes and basecoats. Though pairing it up with larmen medium turned it glossy. Yeah, I’ve still got a lot to learn. But using a combination of wood basecoat, brunt skin, red orche and mixing in buff to build up a highlight, I had so much fun in building up a satisfactory, very dark skin tone

I’ve been thinking of getting these as a compliment to the pro-acryl I just got. I like the idea of using these to replace traditional oil paints especially the flat finish and not having to invest in different thinners. As of late the pricing seems pretty standard and these would add a lot of diversity to my arsenal.

Lovely review as always, Vince. I've started using scale 75 more and more, though, being an acryliphile like yourself this is not exclusively. I've got the core set and the grey set of the artist set out of curiosity and I really like them so far. Particular praise goes out to the violet grey (sart-15) which is one of my favourite colours I've discovered recently. If anyone here paints Space Wolves Space marines for 40k it would most likely make for the perfect base colour for their armour.

Bought the entire range and you pretty much echoed my thoughts on them. I wasn't disappointed in any way, they're very nice. On price; it should be noted that they are large tubes and with their consistency will probably go a long way. Plus I think the tubes probably won't spoil after a few years like standard dropper bottle paints sometimes do.

@bennybarcellos6098 4 жыл бұрын
Large tubes? I thought they were 20ml tubes. I mean, most heavy body acylics START at 60ml and go up to, no shit, 2000 ml, maybe even more. That's basically a bucket of paint. Case in point, Vallejo heavy body acrylics - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/av-studio-acrylic. You can buy a liter of titanium white from Vallejo for less than $25, or a 60ml for $3.50. The 2 liter buckets are on sale right now for just $27! That's the equivalent of 27 cents for a 20ml tube.

rather weirdly, Golden has their acrylic gouache line as well, but I've only seen them among Japanese market, which Acrylic Gouache paints are popular for. I wouldn't call them heavy-body though, they're rather soft and easy to blend without leaving brush marks and that's what they're popular for.

@@Shiruvan True, though Vince does say the Scale75 colours are less thick than others (there is a lot of variation - Liquitex's heavy body are about as runny as Matisse's "flow", which is that company's middle grade of viscosity). Acrylic gouaches are having a renaissance though - Liquitex's new line is interesting. Frustratingly, we get very few in Australia apart from Jo Sonya.

I honestly have a hard time figuring out why I should buy Scale75's hba over anyone else's, and I do like Scale75 (and I don't like heavy body acrylic). Is it better than that Vallejo heavy body (cheaper, semi-matte, also from a respected mini-paint producer)? Is it better than Schmincke or Golden? I didn't get that impression from the video, and it is likely to cost more per ml than even premium HBAs. I almost bought in to the kickstarter because of the brand but I don't even know what I would do with them if they had arrived in the mail. I already "paint unthinned on the model" with my beloved thick-ass Model Color and ScaleColor. Speaking of, I was shopping for Schmincke white heavy body after watching Vince's white painting video and I came across their airbrush inks. I bought a set of primary colors and I'm excited to see how they compare to FW. Any experience with them these at all?
@naphaneal
@naphaneal 4 жыл бұрын
I might be a bit biased, because I love their inks, but Schmincke Inks are a dream when I airbrush. You can use them out of the bottle, no need for thinner. They dry usually matte to satin, depending on the colour. Btw: the swatches in the colourchart show their actual finish and level of transparency. that gives you a rough idea, how they look like. You can mix them with any brand, e.g. I use Aero transparent white to tint GW Talasar blue and it becomes Aethermatic blue. Schmincke inks are usually single pigmented, but it's listed on the bottle. I have no experience with FW inks, as Daler&Rowney is not widely available where I live, but compared with Royal Talens Inks, they are a bit less opaque. You may need one two more coats, but that's IMHO not a big deal. Their metallics are outstanding, but you need a 0.3mm nozzle at least, they don't go through smaller sizes, because they contain actual metal fragments. Clogging would be an constant issue. Speaking of: I rarely had dry tip or a clogged nozzle with Schmincke or Royal Talens inks. Very much so with Vallejo or GW paints. If you bought the basic set, you're set. You can mix any colour using only a couple of drops. They're highly pigmented and therefore very efficent.
@bennybarcellos6098
@bennybarcellos6098 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome, now you got me excited and also grateful that i picked 3 day air from Jackson's instead of free shipping. The basic sweet was a good deal and I could mix all the colors so I got it, and I also got two or three of their extra opaque line. I thought about getting a metallic to try, but they were expensive, I couldn't tell if they'd be any good and I have a ton of metallics already so I'm pretty sure I didn't get one. I also couldn't decide which one to get.

How good are this paints to use in the regular method as base paints?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 жыл бұрын
They are tough as base paints, they are thicker and don't really work for great coverage without some effort (it can be done, you just have to get them into a more traditional layer paint formulation). Vince, I have an unrelated question, can you wash acrylic water based paints over Vallejo alcohol based Liquid Metallics? Will the metallic activate or rust (over time) when introduced to water based mediums?
@naphaneal
@naphaneal 4 жыл бұрын
yes, you can and no, there will be no rust. especially, if you seal each layer with (matt) varnish.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Naphaneal is correct. Most metallic paints don't actually use ferrous pigments, so it's less of a concern, but either way, no, you will be just fine (now, on a separate note, never wash your metallics, it's only ruining the metallic sheen - using inks over metallics or something to create light and shadow, that's a great thing to do, but an all over wash is a fast road to destroying your metallic paint.)

I've heard you discuss aspects of your finishing process, such as increasing saturation to make colors really pop, really going deep into smoothing all your blends, and how "finishing" can end up taking 50% if not more of your total time on a piece, but I'm a bit mystified as to what exactly goes into that finishing process for you. Not trying to give you a big, pain-in-the-butt assignment or anything, but that is definitely a part of the process I would love to see if you ever get around to it. Anyways, thank you so much for all the incredible tutorials you have put up over the years! It's all been a godsend for me over the last couple months and will continue to be my go-to channel for painting going forward.

Awesome, happy to hear it's been so helpful. 1) I don't. I appreciate the offer very much and I may go that direction some day if I ever do this professionally, but for now, it's a hobby and I do it for the love of the game as it were. :) 2) I have don't a video in the form of power point, but never actually recorded it, it would be really, really long. I would have to speed it up something fierce and narrate, but I certainly want to do something like that some day. I will figure out a way.

Ive been doing some searching and i totally forgot about the Abteilung AK 502 acrylic tube paints. They have them at Michigan Toy Soldier. For some reason when i leave you a link to them the comment disappears. Any thoughts or opinion on them? They all seem but forgotten. There are no reviews or videos about them.

Was looking into these sets recently and, as always, I turned to your channel for some info. Now that we have a price for these colors, with sets of 6 (I'm guessing sets is how they are dealing with flattening out the costs of colors that are more expensive by pairing them with some that are less expensive) running at around $36 or about $6 per tube, do you feel that these are overpriced compared to HBAs? My quick research seems to suggest that $6 x 3 = $18 for a 60ml liquitex tube puts these mostly in line with HBAs, which seem to vary from $10 to $25 depending on color. Does that sound like a fair assessment to you? The matte finish is quite appealing, and could imagine springing for some instead of buying HBAs from the local art store if you still rate them well now that you're aware of their final costs. Thank you!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
My assessment is the matte is very nice, they are a little softer than a traditional HBA. My read is if you don't already have a good collection of HBAs, then these are a perfectly fine substitute.

I have a question : Is "heavy body" paint what paint business marketing jargon is trying to communicate when they say their paint is "creamy"?
@johnc.4871
@johnc.4871 4 жыл бұрын
From my observation, heavy body is paint that allows texture on the canvas, and probably extends work time some. You thin it down as required for your needs. usually they dont shift in color as it dries, resists fading, better binder, and can last a very long time with no degradation.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Lots of people call paint creamy, this is more just a particular type of paint. Heavy Body acrylic has to do with the mix and consistency.

Hi, please forgive my English, I am not a native speaker. Sorry but I have a question, I am in a level between beginner and intermediate level, been use gw and av paint quite a lot on my miniature and Gundam because they won't leave any pen mark or trail, so really smooth coating, I was wondering if this will do the same? and will it suitable for my level cuz the name of the paint sounds really need some professional skill on painting. Thank you :)

They are much tougher to avoid streaks and take more time to understand,they are a very different experience. My advice would be if you were looking to get a new type of paint, i would recommend something like Pro Acryl as your next step, it's strong, but smooth like butter.

They cost about 3.4 Euro's each, for me the normal paint colours are far more familiar than the weird hobby paint names, given how thick and pigmented these paints are, wouldn't go far further than standard miniature paints? Other than the wider range of colours of standard miniature paint sets what would be the benefit over using this set which contains 48 colours?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
It would be advantageous if you like the HBA style paints and don't mind mixing from there. This range certainly has a larger set of colors than most HBA (and is probably cheaper, but that's mainly because of pigment quality I suspect).

Vince I have a video request. This is probably a dumb question but it's been driving me insane especially since im gearing up for Armies on Parade. How do you keep dust/hairs off models and how to get them off efficiently??
@naphaneal
@naphaneal 4 жыл бұрын
blow them with canned air or airbrush (air only). but honestly: that's rather pointless, IMHO. dust, hair, or any form of particulates will land on the minis. disturbes the paintjob and overall appearence, yes. sucks, when they are on the mini. but basically, unavoidable. if you have the money, you could build yourself a clean room. IMHO, that's the only way. and even then, you'd need to seal the mini inside a glassbox. I'd not go this far for a mini, or AoP. and, in my experience, judges know about this and don't substract points for dusty minis.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
It's a real challenge for me as I have 3 long haired dogs in my office all day. That being said, as Naphanel said, canned air is good, also, just a big, soft make-up brush that you don't actually use for paint is an easy way to dust your minis quickly before you apply paint or in between sessions. Hope that helps. :)
