Was Pyat Pree a scheming villain trying to trap Daenerys forever in the house of the undying of a misunderstood tragic character who has had it about as bad as anyone in these books?
Today I want to take a little look at A Song of Ice and Fire from the viewpoint of Pyat Pree and take the side that he did nothing wrong and Dany burned his whole life down before he ever turned against her. This is a big change from Game of Thrones and I feel like the text makes a lot more sense if you read it as Pyat Pree and the undying ones were not trying to trap Daenerys in the house of the undying.

Exactly what I came here to say. Pree is an analogue of Bloodraven. He's a sorcerer who is sapping powers from eternal magical prisoners, those magical prisoners are reaching out to messiah figures in order to be freed. Could it be that the other "dreamers" hooked into the Weirwood net are are using the same method as the Undying Ones here? Are they are casting their shadows (the Others) to provoke someone capable of magically destryoing them? Hmmmm indeed.

Exactly why would he bring her to the tower? What sort of goal was that? He wouldn't gain anything from it. Maybe he was just showing off his cool stuff, but I doubt it. Seems more like he was lied to by the Undying into bringing her there. The instructions could have been given to him by the Undying to tell her. While he didn't do anything wrong, he did get played.

@@Bleilock1 There is literal evidence to support Martin planned to kill of Victarian, this isn't conjecture, there are records of correspondence between Martin and his editor where he says he plans to kill off Victarion. He's obviously changed his mind for now, but my point was that at the time of writing Clash of Kings, Martin most likely did not have much to anything planned for Victarion and as such would not being spending an entire chapter foreshadowing his coming venture, books later.

Interpreting the undying - uh - dying as essentially suicide by cop is interesting. I like it! But I think the movements of the undying are simply them writhing in pain from being set on fire. Still very cool interpretation. I still think that the undying gave Daenerys a prophecy, a huge opportunity, and then basically tried to Harvey Weinstein her on the way out

Pyat Pree is an analogue of Bloodraven. Both sorcerers that are draining powers from undead magical prisoners. And yes, now I'm also convinced that the Others are looking for the same thing in Azor Ahai. Someone to free them by ending, likely burning, it all. hey Michael, I noticed that in this video you're proposing that shade of the evening cannot actually turn you into a blue shadow undying one, and you say that there is no direct evidence for this, although I think everyone assumes it because it is intuitive. but then on the other hand, you are asserting that Pyatt and the other warlocks are drawing their power from the blue shadows? and I don't see that suggested or even implied anywhere, and you're building your whole theory off that as an assumption. so I would question it based on that, and based on the fundamental nature of what's going on when she wakes up and they are sucking and biting her. they are the ones trying to draw something from Danny, and in the vision it says they needed her life, her fire. you also asked why they would be showing her visions of the future if they don't intend to let her escape, and the answer is easy there in my opinion: they are using their very real gift of prophecy as a lure, to tempt her into immersing herself into the visions so the undying ones can do what they did - pounce on her and begin draining her. so it makes perfect sense divisions would be true, because they have an actual gift of prophecy, they're just using that as bait. as usual, I enjoyed your video very much, and I appreciate you pulling at the seams of our assumptions about the story. I just wanted to give my two cents as far as what I would say to challenge what you've laid out here. Cheers man

Guest right is quite explicitly tied to being given food. There are rituals associated with both entering (bread and salt) and leaving (guest gifts) the protection of guest right - at least in Westeros. It's not just a case of killing someone in their own home being taboo.

You get it all wrong, guest right is from perspective of host toward his guest, if your guest an a-hole who kills you or hurt you in some way (break sth, attack you etc.) its your problem, cos you should not invite ungreatful a-holes to your household so Danny did not break guest right since she was a guest not a host

Great video! I think this theory about Pyatt Pree’s role and his temple can help us illuminate Mirri Maz Duur’s role between Dany and the Eggs. Recall that Mirri Maz Duur ululated in ecstasy as she began to burn. It can also help illuminate perhaps why Bran is being sought for his powers. It can also perhaps illuminate more about the role of the temple in which Arya is developing her power.

I also think that the sequence of visions you describe where the blue shadows that Dany is freeing turn into the slaves that she is freeing is GRRM signaling to the reader to compare Dany’s role with regard to the shadows to her role with regard to the other slaves she will free.

I always appreciate a more nuanced interpretation of the story. I have certain reservations about it, but not enough to directly counter it. The thing that always bothers me about how most people see the Undying and their house is that they appear to have a reasonable ability to know the shape of future events. Mel tells us the first thing she looks for is danger to herself and I can't imagine the Undying are any different. They must have known exactly what would happen. Where I have my reservations is the interpretation the Undying were actually hurt. On a basic level that last experience directly refects Dany's experience in Ghiscar. The very end reminds me of the chaos in the pit where Drogon appears, burns people, and then flies her away. While I would still consider the possibility she did, I remain unconvinced Dany and Drogon burned any more than an illusion the Undying expected her to burn. And in that sense I argree with your premise that Pyat Pree is also doing nothing more than what the Undying expect him to do. He's as much a victim of their plans whether the Undying sacrificed themselves or not. I expect the Undying to be spirits in the black trees casting illusions within the house and the appearance of their demise just calculated manipulation. The actions of what Dany sees are too similar to the actions of the wights. As proxies for Masters/Ghiscari or even the Qarthene they work to well. Presenting as wise and beautiful, but really being corrupt and ugly beneath the surface. If there was an element to the vision that suggested something closer to what you suggest, I think it would be the destruction of the blue heart. An object of power seeming to maintain those around the table. There is something in your theory that intrigues me though. This idea of an enslavement of magic combined with the suggestion of the world men are making. There's something about the nature of Weirwoods, Shadewoods, and Goldenhearts that I can't quite nail down. A middle ground between your theories and Eldric Stoneskins that I think explains most it.

Yeah I 1000% blame the show for this one. The fake pree that tries to mislead her and the way he tries to kill her after the fact probably clouded my mind somewhat, but when you've consumed both books and show it's hard for it to not get a little muddy when it comes to perception of some characters, and they did him so so dirty in the show that all of that combined really convinced me he was out to trap her. But breaking it down like this, you're totally right. He had no reason to give her the correct instructions on how to navigate the HotU if he meant to keep her there forever. Given what we've read from the Forsaken chapter of winds, things only got worse for him from there. Whoops
