quick fun fact: that fire alarm box that locks your hand isn't as stupid as it looks. the piece that locks around your hand detaches from the box, meaning you can run away, you just have a cuff on your hand that identifies you until someone from law enforcement can release you. it's actually a pretty cool way to make sure that if people set off a fire alarm on purpose when there is no fire, they get punished.

Fun fact about the Reliant Robin: In the UK, people with a motorcycle license can drive a 3-wheeler. @Bacteriophagebs
@Bacteriophagebs 2 жыл бұрын
@VeeVee Uver They were still using actual live ammo in movies at the time, too. They'd have sharpshooters shoot near the actors in a way that would (hopefully) ricochet away from them, or rig machineguns on mounts that wouldn't let them shoot in the places where the actors would be. Despite all this and a few close calls, no one was ever actually killed. With the invention of squibs (little explosives that simulate bullet impacts) the live ammo practice died out. Eventually. It was still cheaper to use live ammo, after all, and most actors were willing to put up with it because, again, zero fucks to give.

I studied design for a few years and the first thing they taught us is most decisions are made in less than an instant, especially purchasing decisions, this is why packaging and branding is so important, buying is almost an instinctive action, near identical packaging has in my life usually lead to me accidentally buying salad dressing instead of mayonnaise or the wrong type of cookie, but damn having your cold drinks and bleach nearly be indistinguishable is an utter failure of one of the first and most important aspects of design

A little while back I saw an explanation for the fire alarm that locks onto your wrist. The part that locks on detaches from the box when the alarm is pulled. You're still able to leave the building, you just have a piece of metal around your arm that you need the fire fighters to remove. It's not a great design, but it's at least not as bad as the picture makes it look.

6:06 It gets even worse. From what I've heard, the people who made that slide weren't even engineers, they had no experience in making waterslides, and when they tested it out using mannequins, some came back with huge dents in their heads and some completely decapitated. They managed to make the slide slightly safer and used employees to test out the slide, most employees came back with teeth missing. Despite this, they opened the slide anyway. Suprisingly the ride worked, other than the fact people would loose teeth, eventually, the lost teeth of the people who rode the slide got caught in the sides and ended up cutting people who rode the slide. All this may be a myth, but it's what I've heard.

Another piece of dangerous design: a friend of mine has a genesis car and one of the safety precautions is that if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt while driving, the car will completely stop. So once, his niece was driving it to switch parking spots, she didn’t put it on. While on the turn, it stopped and wouldn’t move if she stepping on the pedal, so she was in a panic. Then she put the seatbelt on and it became fine again. (Imagine stopping on the shoulder of the highway, forgetting to put your seatbelt back on, and going back on it)

5:47 At a lot of adolescent impatient mental facilities that I have personally been in, this is horrifying common, it's worse if you have a roommate (not all hospitals do) because they're not allowed to put full doors, most only have curtains to divide the bedroom to the bathroom, or occasionally a half door with a rubber seal and no lock. What is so horrifying is that the showerheads have almost always drenched the toilet and the sink, including your clothes since you can't leave your clothes outside of the bathroom, since there's always cameras. So you have to very carefully use the blanket you sleep with to shield your towel and clothing and try to dangle it off the sink and create a little tent to keep them in Thank you for reading my comment to whoever did! On the topic of the rectal and oral thermometers being labeled, those seem to be a multi-location use thermometer, in which case you need to reprogram it every time you want to use it in a different spot because of differences in body temperature. They probably just bought two and programmed one for oral and one for rectal, to avoid having to reprogram the damn thing every time they need to take a temperature differently. Especially seeing as those are the kind that have removable plastic one time use covers, so they not only get sanitized and cleaned but they don't have much if any contact to begin with.

That last one is a yikes from me. Having ridden horses for a good portion of my life and had my fair share of falls, I cringe at the thought of not wearing head protection (mostly because the trees around here are out for blood). I would have been in a world of trouble if I had something like that the one time I fell off jumping and landed on the base of my skull (with adequate protection). I caused a panic. Got back on and did a couple more jumps before I decided I was feeling ill and got taken to hospital. Full on concussion and new hat needed. And that was in a 'safe' environment. If I saw that disclaimer on something I'd be reporting it to however many authories as I could lol.

I agree with most people that it's a stupid design, but not that it's dangerous. I prefer a column shifter (which was removed because it's "ugly"), more reasons I don't care for newer cars. These stupid knob shifters aren't super dangerous though, it's electronically controlled, it will not go into the gear you selected until the vehicle comes to a complete stop or at least a very slow speed. I believe an alert will also display and sound on the gauge cluster display telling you what you just did so that you can correct it. Terrible user experience and stupid? Yes. Some crazy super dangerous design? Not at all.

I've driven with one (a ford focus). Took me like a second to figure out that the big dial with automatic shift markings in the area where the stick usually is and not even near where the radio volume nub, isn't a volume nub. Besides, why wouldn't you use the radio volume buttons on the steering wheel? I think it's mostly so that if you forget to change back to parking, it automatically shifts to it. Not especially good or bad. Really a "who cares" design.
