I was fiddling around and discovered a pretty cool combo of Always On Radial Menu with a Long Press activation.

Great idea. I had toyed with the idea of using the stick for a radial menu, but never got around to it. Have to give it a try now. What I would really like is release to neutral position activating the last selected item. Something similar to the touch release activation on a trackpad.

Nice I'll have to try this.

I've been having trouble with l4d2 when it comes to the voice commands, I've tried binding the key for the radial menu to a button and used the mouse but it never picked the one I wanted only the default x voice command. It's a shame sense this game works great with controller. Do you think you could look into this?

One place i found the Radial Menu=Always On feature useful was in something like Europa Universalis IV or Crusader Kings 2. Those games feature many different visual info maps so if i wanted to quickly look through a few info maps i'd just slide my thumb around. Really wish the Chord Activator worked with touch menus, though. In a case like this i'd pair the radial options with something more comfortable as a selector, like the trigger, and select the options that way instead.

A Steam dev has mentioned that allowing radial menus to be activated by another button is on the to do list. Who knows when though.

Any idea what might be the best way to get an onscreen prompt to stay and show when in a certain action set? Im playing Neir Automata right now which has been one of the more difficult games to find a good way to implement this controller with and I have an action set for both Joystick-like-Mouse and standard Joystick (for those twin stick shooter moments it likes to switch between) but I tend to forget when I've switched to the twin-stick action set and wonder why my controls are all wonky. I was thinking of some how using one of the overlay features to show an icon of some sort that would stay on screen when switching to that particular action set but I cant think of any reasonable way of doing this. any ideas?

Hmm... not easily. Only thing I could think of would be to have a touch menu up or rely on the usual action set changes. For Nier I just went with joystick-like-mouse with an outer edge spin. The outer edge spin worked pretty well for the 2D parts.

I went with the trigger full pull myself. Normal controls usually, right trigger activates gyro as does holding down the left grip (which I have bound to pod special, to aim those long range laser beams). A full pull turns off the gyro and changes the right pad to joystick move. Having the outer edge spin on might be more elegant, though, as its really hard to just lightly hold down the trigger when everything is going to shit and I'm spamming dodge to not get oneshot by a stray bullet.

I'm interested to know what settings you would have your left trackpad on for FPS, assuming you still use it for movement? I've experimented a little in FPS but found it difficult.

some times I'll just use joystick move if the game supports using both xinput and mouse/keyboard but normally I'lil just use direction pad set to WASD and set the haptics to high.
@RambleCan
@RambleCan 6 жыл бұрын
Like Tonk I also usually put Haptics on High. If it's WASD I tend to stick with Crossgate (more deliberate diagonals). Joystick move and WASD I give it a bit on an inner deadzone so moving feels more deliberate. I also tend to open up the outer deadzone a bit beyond the default for joystick move. Basically, I just MADE myself use it for a few days and then it started to click and I found what felt good.

Cheers, those are really great tips. I'll try them out. I watched your crossgate vid recentlyand from your examples on the other setting you seemed to have similar movement problems that I've encountered.

It seems much easier to set up Menu activation style > touch release. What advantages does this setup have?
@RambleCan
@RambleCan 6 жыл бұрын
Touch release on the analog stick feels incredibly clunky and unintuitive to me. You have to angle over your selection and make sure to let go while still angling over that selection. This way you can just hold on it momentarily. Obviously, if you dig touch release, stick with that.

This was not what I was attempting to do with the radial menu. Regardless, this helped me to understand how the radial menu activation worked which is what I was struggling with in the first place. I don't use a steam controller but I use the DS4 through steam and this is just one more thing that makes me absolutely love the customization that the controller configuration tool provides.

Awesome. The vast majority of what I talk about in Steam Controller tutorials should apply to other controllers too.

How would you config Games like Fallout 3 and FarCry 3 if you would have to use Mouse and Keyboard bindings? In both Games you are often in your PipBoy or the Crafting Menue. I yust love the right pad mouse input combined with Gyro sooooooooo mutch!!! Im basicly testing all my old games with this incredible peace of Hardware!!! Ive sen your bindings in Fallout 3 but its Mouselike Joystick... I mean you learned all this new things over time, so how would you do it NOW after all this advanced technics that you introduced to us? Maybe you could give this games with this stupid mouse or controler thing a second chance.
@RambleCan
@RambleCan 6 жыл бұрын
With Fallout I kept mouselike joystick because those games don't allow controller and mouse input at the same time and in a game where I sneak a lot, analog movement is VERY important to me. FarCry 4 would allow mouse and gamepad inputs at the same time so it wasn't an issue. You can use a separate Set or Layer for menus though to make it easier to craft.
