Railfanning Downtown Brampton & showcasing the Abandoned OBRY Line on April 30 2022

On Saturday April 30 2022 I made a trip to Downtown Brampton hoping to see a few Halton Sub Trains & also to film/showcase the Abandoned OBRY Line which I’m pretty sure will be coming up pretty soon in that area regarding how eager the city seems to be with getting started on the redevelopment project over them 5 acres of land stretching from Railroad st to Queen st.
I’d say I got rather lucky today as the Saturday sure did yield a decent amount of freight activity on the Halton Sub between 10:30am-3:30pm and actually at the point when you see EB CN 148 & VIA 84 use the crossovers to switch from Track 2 onto Track 1 just before the diamond… that’s because another EB manifest outlawed on Track 1 maybe half a km from the diamond probably due to running out of time. One other WB manifest also snuck by me while I was filming by the old Dixie Cup Spur, hence I wasn’t able to get it on film. So yes the freights seemed to quickly get lined one after the other today
Anyhow just thought a handful of you would enjoy this spring of 2022 film showcasing the Abandoned OBRY line which many are almost forsure… will be gone from this spot at least by the summers-end.
Also talked just a little about somewhat recent history of Downtown Brampton where I showcased the area in which the old CN Dixie Cup Railway Spur once ran for many decades as well as the old Downtown Brampton Little Train Shoppe which resides in the old Downtown Building at the corner of Mill & Railroad st up until they sadly had to close in 2009 after the building was sold to the developer who is working on the new condos there now. *if you remember The Little Train Shoppe much or have any stories I’d love to hear in the comments below? And also regarding the old CN Dixie Cup Spur, if anyone ever took any pics of the area at the time the Spur was torn up (late 2012 I think) or shortly after (2013) I sure would love to see if you’d be kind enough to share? Think I’d even be willing to pay to obtain a print if you want to go that route? And same deal of course if you ever managed any pics of CN actually on the Spur servicing GP before service was discontinued?

The city of Brampton council said that they’ll save the Brampton portion of the rail line, they said there won’t be any new development approaching anytime soon. I think metrolinx will be using it or possibly the LRT will be using it.

The Region of Peel annouced in July 2022 that the corrider would be converted into a trail. I highly doubt that it will ever be used for passenger or freight rail ever again.

Update on this. The diamond has since been cut out. The Halton sub is now straight tracked through.

Hmmmm not sure who you’ve talked to but I went to have a look today & Downtown Brampton’s OWLS (One Way Low Speed) Diamond seems to still be pretty much 100% intact as of December 4 2022, as well as the rest of the dormant OBRY trackage, sure as hell plan to film a vid of the scene on the 1yr anniversary since the OBRY retreat which will be Dec 17

Very interesting video; a lot of Brampton history. Lived there in 1988-1991; did some railfanning on all 3 lines, OBRY when Cando was running it. Never shopped at that store, did it exist in 1990 ? Progress changes everything, but those condos are an eyesore ! Anybody still use Dixiecups ? I 'd still like to get an OBRY N-scale preferably no. 1000.

Thank you for your comment Steve! I believe The Little Train Shoppe originally opened around the late 1990s, originally operating out of the SouthEast corner of the old Dominion Skate Building. Around the mid 2000s, they moved to the NE side of the building with a view directly facing directly at the Mill st crossing & Downtown station. Was more or less forced to close after the place was sold to the developer for the Condo’s (note the Condo advertisement actually on the building in the 2009 street view I showed with the store closing signs) but that project ended up stalling out for a number of years and finally got underway late 2018 I think. I definitely agree with your eyesore statement. Interesting that you seen all 3 lines I showed in their better days, had interchanging freight between CN & CP at Brampton been discontinued by 1988? Can you remember? Got another video coming soon that I just filmed on Aug 27 showing the abandoned OBRY & how fast nature took over and in that vid I’ll briefly show the old CN/CP interchange also. I’m sure a handful people still use Dixiecups on occasion, my family still has a handful stored away in a basement pantry and occasionally use them when lots of guests come over. I’d honestly always somewhat had a OBRY 1000 or even BCRY model on my wishlist also, already know how to custom paint myself, just gotta learn how to make the decals lol Thanks for commenting and sharing your story, Graydon
