Just a fine little video I thought a handful of train buffs would enjoy both now and in the future. Just me showing the condition of the abandoned Orangeville Brampton Railway Short Line trackage throughout Downtown Brampton as well as talking a little bit about some past Brampton history such as the very old CN/CP interchange track north of the Halton Sub Diamond. Pretty amazing how fast nature took over in some spots. Hope you all enjoy
***NOTE- about my comments a little talking about the possibility for some of the railway right of way to potentially be ‘redeemed’ for a commuter service within the urban city limits: www.mississauga.com/news-stor... -according to the news article from late July sadly doesn’t seem like it’ll be happening. Seems like a rail trail will be the fate for the abandoned line within the urban city limits also. Doesn’t really surprise me as I’m sure they’d be a handful of obstacles to the plan and it actually would take many years I think to eventually be profitable for the commuter companies but all I know was that it was just a tiny thought brought to the table nevertheless earlier this year when the town councils were deciding what was eventually going to become of the abandoned line.

Very nice camera work. And what a beautiful day to film. I think I'd like to hike or bike on or alongside the line one day while the tracks are still there and before they formally convert it to a trail.

Thanks for the video. I’ve be checking out the old line when I can and I agree, nature moves quick! I remember the interchange back in the 80’s

I think a light rail commuter rail serving during rush-hours would've been a better idea like you've stated earlier.

Go transit could have taken this rail line and turned it into a short commuter train between Orangeville and Streetsville and ran Budd Diesel Units on so they would not have to worry about the Horseshoe Curve near Inglewood. Metrolink and the Government of Ontario or GO as we know it have no idea of how to plan or use railways.

I'm planning to go to Orangeville this Monday because I checked a satellite view and it looked like the ties were all gone but it was kinda poor quality and it showed hoppers in rochiling and the yard.

Quick question do you think it would still be safe for a train to get through all that vegetation on the railway?
@NscalefromOntario
@NscalefromOntario Жыл бұрын
Probably, they’d have to get some MOW equipment first to clear away the vegetation to make the track passable & a test run with just the light engine would need to be done next at a very slow speed with crewmen very carefully protecting the point to watch for any potential signs of trouble but after that likley some new speed restrictions but I’m sure the trackage still can be used. -That’s what BCRY did in March of 2016 when they reactivated a mile of the Meaford Sub west of the Utopia Diamond for tanker car storage (after initially going dark after the last Collingwood run in July 2011). Got some MOW equipment first to clear the brush and inspect the track, after that a quick test run of 1001 light engine over that mile of track to ensure it was still safe www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=23698 & then it filled up with a couple hundred tanker cars. Utopia residents were not happy campers about it 😂 www.simcoe.com/news-story/6506531-residents-petition-against-empty-railcar-storage-in-utopia/

Thanks for the video! I remember this area from my childhood. I remember walking along the tracks (yes, I was naughty!) and in particular the interchange curve next to the diamond when it was still exposed. Curious, where are you getting the historical maps seen at 23:10 in the video?
@NscalefromOntario

Thank you for your comment and truth be told I’m not perfect either🙃. Wandered the ‘so called’ OBRY shortcut (as SO MANY downtown residents actually take the route as a shortcut mainly between the CN Diamond to about English st and sometimes even farther than that) & explored the rusty old interchange plenty of times. When I was a teenager in about the mid-2010s. Now that I’m older and more mature I understand it really wasn’t the best thing to do which is why now I’m willing to try and influence safety for the future generations to come. For the interchange curve when it was still exposed, can you recall when exactly your childhood memories were from? 1990s, 2000s? To assess the historical maps I found this Brampton archive map site knows as maps1.brampton.ca and in the top right hand corner, third icon from the end should be a + icon and when you click on it you should then be able to view all the old satalight aerial imagery of Brampton going back to 1994. Man I was so happy when I discovered this site myself, here’s the Google search link: maps1.brampton.ca/mybrampton/

@@NscalefromOntario Thank you for that link! I have found collections of historical satellite imagery for Toronto and Mississauga but not Brampton. That one only goes back to 2000 but it's still quite cool. I lived in Brampton in the 90s. Moved out to Mississauga in 2000. The exploring I did would've been at the end of that, so 98-00. The interchange was already disused at the time and the tracks were rusty, but still in what looked like usable condition, like they could be restored easily. At some point they removed the connecting switch from the mainline but I don't remember exactly when that was, if it was before or after 2000 I'm not sure. Edit: Looking at the maps, the switch was still apparently there in 2007. So maybe my memory's playing tricks on me or I'm thinking of some other piece of rail, but I do remember a curve like that where it almost reaches the straight main track but ends just a few steps from it because the switch connecting them was removed. Sorry I can't be of more help. This was a long time ago and I didn't think to document any of it.

@@softy8088 actually should have started this earlier but in the link I shared, there is only one 1990s view & it is Spring of 1994 if you search it in the search bar. After that a spring of year 2000 view followed by spring of 2002. Years 2004 & beyond there is a Spring & Fall satalight view for almost every year leading up to the present time. Not sure where exactly you found the historic satalight imagery of Toronto & Mississauga but on the Toronto.ca website under Aerial Photographs www.toronto.ca/city-government/accountability-operations-customer-service/access-city-information-or-records/city-of-toronto-archives/whats-online/maps/aerial-photographs/ : this site actually has Brampton views in years 1961, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973 & 1975 I believe. Not nearly as straight forward to finding the exact locations and takes just a little but of playing around with but you’ll get it soon enough. Sure hope to eventually find myself a couple Brampton views from the 1980s. Some day… For the interchange, switch on the CN side connecting to the CN Halton Sub remained in tact well into the 2000s & was removed during a signal upgrades & track work project at the Brampton Diamond in June of 2007. If you search 2007 in the search bar, you will be able to note the switch still in tact in spring of 2007 but in the fall 2007 view it was gone. On the CP/OBRY side, as shown in the map that switch was taken out sometime between spring and fall of 2010:

@@NscalefromOntario Thanks again. Unfortunatley I can't find the 1994 view, the list only goes as far back as Spring 2000, and I don't see a "search bar" on that page. I see icons for "Property Report", "Brampton Basemap Widget" (which is what I'm using to find the historical views) and a few others ending in "share" but no search. The Toronto page is the same one I have. (I was going to show you the map of Mississauga here but youtube deletes any comments I make with links in them.) As for the switch at the Brampton diamond, I may simply be conflating it with a different memory. I definitely remember the stretch of track next to Brampton GO/VIA station, and exploring it for several blocks north and south of the diamond. I definitely remember the curve joining up to the mainline. But I have only a foggy recollection of the switch having been removed but the rest of the tracks still being there. That didn't happen until 2007 so maybe I saw it when was visiting for old times' sake? I don't know. 15 years does a number on one's memory. Props to you for documenting all this history.

@@softy8088 I see, ever explore the Dixie Cup Railway Spur also or even see any action on it? Not sure if you seen this video I filmed earlier this spring but I did show it off a little & whew it was kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbeqlaidydLXZmQ.html And about the maps, hmmmm that’s a little odd, happen to have a email I can reach you at? If so I can send you the exact search page from the site if you want (with regards to the site I believe I can’t exactly copy and paste links exact searches, it only gives me a forward option for sharing)?

@NscalefromOntario
@NscalefromOntario Жыл бұрын
Believe I read somewhere that just to turn them off would be a bit of a project so until the Diamond removal project for the rail trail conversion really gets going… think they’ll be left as-is. After all, BCRY signals (basically OBRY’s sister almost) for the Utopia Diamond governing the abandoned Collingwood half of the line remained well active I believe up into this year until Utopia Diamond was pulled in early august, hence the fact that last train to Collingwood was 2011: www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=18608 Diamond did still see a bit of use tho on the former Meaford between 2016-2018 when BCRY was storing tanker cars up to 5ft line

Hi buddy, uhh yes I can somewhat remember your requests and such around 2019 I think but it’s ok, please don’t feel bad you were much younger back then and your hormones were quite a bit different than they are now. I understood where you were even at that time. It’s totally ok I know because I was that age myself one time also and honestly there were a couple KZfaqrs i really loved/admired and always commented some somewhat silly stuff (I’d consider now) on their channels when I was about 10 or 11 I’d say so please don’t feel bad, childhood mind/hormones are all just a part of growing up👍🏻
