Hi everyone! My name is Vasil and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45 Sailboat. In this episode, my neighbor is kind enough to show me how to raise my main sail for the very first time. I have not had the chance to look at the condition of my sail up to this point in my journey. I can't overstate the importance of having someone who knows what they are doing help me with something I know nothing about. This is a big step on the restoration of this boat. I find myself constantly dreaming about actually sailing this boat. Learning how to raise the sail for the very first time was a very gratifying experience.

You are going to be so happy after you replace your running rigging. The standing rigging will be a chore, but that will definitely be a good idea. My first sail was jam packed with a lot of nerves. I am now at my 25th sail and it gets a lot easier. I can't wait to see your first sail! Congrats on the raising of the mainsail. Looks like you have hank on head sail. You will be running back and forth from your cockpit to the bow to lower the jib and replace with another sail, ort just to lower it and pack it up while the mainsail may be up. I would get a jackline on the boat and get safety harness setup to be able to move on the boat while tethered. If you fall of under sail, game over if your are single handing.

Wow! You sure have been out sailing, I’m very happy for you! Good idea on the safety harness, I really need that for this boat. One of the neighboring boats was lost at sea not too long ago. So safety is hitting very close to home at the moment. I’m trying to plan out the rigging replacement with a local boat yard, super pumped to get that done and go sailing!!!

Something you can do is get your sail specs for the sail, luff forward edge, leech the aft edge and foot the bottom edge. Contact a local sail loft where they restore old sails or buy a used sail in good condition. A roller furling sail would be the best option for your boat, unless you always have crew. Standing rigging is number one, it is the first thing to replace or restore, check with a rigger. Running rigging is next to check and replace if needed. Also, you will need to service your winches. If you can get a temporary slip, these chores will be easier to accomplish.

Bob, I’m not sure how much life is left in my poor old sail. Probably not much after years of abuse in the sun. More than likely I will go the route you are suggesting and opt for some good used sails. The rigging is an the top of my major to-do list, and will be replaced as soon as I can get this boat to a yard.

I recently went through the same process. I am in the same boat as you, no experience and didn't know how to do it. I had a friend help me. I didn't even know what to look for. I didn't know what I didn't know. Before you go sailing, I suggest that you have an experience sailboat inspector do an in depth survey of the boat with you. You don't want to find your problems the hard way. I spent 4 years in the US Coast Guard and can't tell you how many novice sailors that we either towed home or pulled them off their boat as it was sinking. Also take some sailing classes to get the basics. I am excited for you. I still have ALLOT of work to do on my boat before I try to take it out.

William, I am on the waiting list for a permanent spot. Transient fees as $225 per month. Once I get full time status it goes down to $128 per month! I love it here.

Good call on this, everyone is telling me to get a rig inspection… probably for a very good reason! Lol. I’m looking into sourcing dynema at the moment like you suggested. Then, it’s just a matter of redoing all the rigging.
