The drummer was basically the lead singer.

1970-1972 were great years for the music because it was a transition/evolvement period from the 60's music. Also, as a teen during those years it was one amazing party.

Rare Earth is the 1st band I ever saw live. I had never heard of them. Loved them ever since. Great band!

As I remember, this band was signed to Motown and you can hear why. I love their fusion of rock and R&B and I agree they do sound a bit like Sly and the Family Stone. I had actually forgotten about them so I’m very pleased that you did a reaction to this song. I was about 16 or 17 when this came out so it brings back a lot of memories.. They also had one song called Get Ready, and one called I Just Want To Celebrate. Thank you guys. The beat goes on. 🕊❤️🎼

I saw Rare Earth live at my first concert in 1970 in Madison Square Garden!!! After they blew the audience away Gladys Knight and the Pips performed. The headliners were Sly and the Family Stone!!! 18,000 people never sat down once during the entire show. Sly was an experience that I cannot put into words. This was my entry into the world of live rock music scene. We never realized how lucky we were back then. All this for $6!!!!

I think Rare Earth was either the first, or only, White act signed by Motown. They put on a great live show. The keyboard player would ride on the organ while on stage.

Peter Rivera, the drummer & lead singer, is so good. He still sings and has been, IMHO, one of the great voices in rock n' roll.

I could say a lot about this group.. the most important thing for me is when the end of the 70s led me to listen to more funk groups and artists.. then in Greece we listened to British hard rock.. almost exclusively..

Me and my buddy's piled in a van and drove and hour to see these guys at a crappy bar in my college days in the late 80s. They kicked ass and took names! Such nice and humble human beings. The Rock and Roll HOF has their head up their ass if they do not recognize these guys!

Saw them live in 1988 in Ft Worth at Billy Bob's along with Vanilla Fudge. Very cool show.

This was 1971 & the Vietnam War was still raging. Our country had enough of it. Young people had something legitimate to protest & rage against. Rare Earth was one of the voices speaking out.

When you play Rare Earth you're supposed to put the stereo speakers on the front porch and crank that sucker up. Love your comparison of Rare Earth with War and Sly. I've always thought the same thing. I usually play a mix of those three groups along with some Temptations tunes.

Please react to The Dawn by Osibisa. They were an African/West Indian band with their own sound. You will dig them.

Berry Gordy developed the Rare Earth label to give Blue Eyed Soul rock/pop radio airplay. Groups like Rare Earth would get Album and Top 40 airplay and bring a wider audience ... more sales for Motown. The Rustix , R.Dean Taylor, Stoney and Meatloaf, even early Neil Young all recorded sides for Gordy. Clive Davis over at CBS/Epic already was having great airplay with Sly and the Family Stone, Chambers Brothers, etc. Gordy had songwriter Norman Whitfield to compose "Psychedelic Soul" for The Temptations in late 1968 onward. The next step was to bring in white artists on a subsidiary label and appeal to a wider demographic. Stax Recs often had different labels for their pop roster as well.

Being in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is great, but MANY great bands that could/should be aren't, so not being in it doesn't mean anything. This is a current issue because Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner was really the one who was deciding who would get in or not, and he's since said really gross things. He's since been kicked out of his leadership role in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He said women artists & Black artists weren't 'articulate' enough to be included in his book of interviews of musical icons, which ended up including only White men. Disgusting guy who was the RnR Hall of Fame gatekeeper.
