Hi from the UK. IMHO Band Maid are one of the most exciting live bands in the world today. The members are so talented and play so well together. Miku formed the band. She used to work in a Maid Cafe and wanted to mix the cute Maid outfits with a rock sound. Kanami the lead guitarist (who also plays the piano you hear at the start) writes most of their music now along with Miku who writes the lyrics. Akane and Misa are such a tight rhythm section. No one plays drum fills quite like Akane and Misa's bass playing is up there with the best. Lastly Saiki is a real presence on stage and has such an expressive voice. They're currently touring extensively outside Japan. Just did a string of European dates and are playing the US later this year (but I think all the dates are sold out). They are building a huge following outside Japan. Daydreaming is one of their more mellow tracks, most of their music is rock based but full of really catchy melodies, hooks, pre-choruses, breakdowns and instrumental licks. Definitely worth watching more live stuff from these ladies. Try Play, Puzzle, Moratorium, Don't You Tell Me... I could go on but these few tracks should give you a good idea of what they can do.😁

When Saiki sang the intro unaccompanied before the instruments came in, at the recent London concert. It was goosebumps time. Just find a way to see them live.

They write, arrange and perform their own material. Kanami plays the opening intro on piano. They are simply the best hard rock band on the planet today. I am lucky enough to get to see them in LA on September 30th. I can't wait. About the costume. It was Miku's work uniform at Maid Cafés. She formed the idea of a "gap" between what an audience saw and what they heard. Miku is a marketing genius. And it doesn't hurt they are all supremely talented. They have the "it" factor in spades.

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with the full history, but in a nutshell, Miku was working in a maid cafe, singing happy songs to milkshakes, while liking rock music, and thought it would be great to have a band that looked like cute maid cafe maids, but played hard rock. She termed it "the gap", meaning the difference between expectation and actuality. Originally some of the girls were hesitant about the outfits (they all used to be very similar) but they've tailored them to more match their personalities over time. MISA, the bassist, calls her outfit "assassin maid". As for songs, as has been mentioned, most of their stuff is heavier than this (but still rock, rather than metal), so to ease you in I'd suggest "Alone", "Choose Me", or "Secret My Lips". The latter also has a "sister track" called "Secret Maiko Lips" which was an April Fool's prank. The band announced they were going to change their image to dress and sound like geisha girls, and rerecorded the song in full maiko (apprentice geisha) costume, partly using traditional Japanese instruments. It's a quite beautiful video, but always see Secret My Lips first though, making it a double reaction.

I freaking LOVE THIS BAND. I found out about them last year. Already was lucky to see them live twice. Tiny venues but DAMN is it always AMAZING. This year way better than the last. Also So far both times VIP tickets absolutely worth it the double price. Last year we got group pictures with the band, This year very short meet & greet BUT also got a poster signed on the spot by the Band... I'm still gitty about the experience of that alone

Nice reaction. I've been a guitar player, for most of my life, I did acoustic folk and always hated the drums ... But as you noticed, Akane, the drummer here, takes things to the next level of tastefull!! She's one of two drummers that always blows me away as to how tastefull they play... There other being Tomoya from 'One Ok Rock' (another Japanese band you should check out of you haven't already.) The drummer, lead guitar, and bass players are all multi-instrumentalists, and haver music degrees. That was one of their rock ballads, most of their music is harder Rock, and of the 70 or so band-maid songs I am aware of, there is not a bad one among them. These women are the real thing.

You are so right, Miku's plaintive wail is the perfect counterpoint to Saiki's vocals on this song. Everything you said was right on the money. These ladies are immensely talented and dedicated in all that they do. They are my favorite band, and have been for the last couple years to the point that I now listen to little else. "Awkward" live is a good choice for your next reaction or "Moratorium" if you want to hear how heavy they can get.

In the sleeve notes of the CD "Conqueror" there are full English lyric translations at the back.

This is by far one of their mellowest pieces. You'll have to check out Onset if you want a diametrically opposed sound. Check out everything they do. It's all good. I'm an old guy and got so hooked on them I bought their entire catalog. You need to see Misa play solo, her nickname is "The Assassin". Miku writes most of the lyrics and actually is the one who formed the band. Everyone will tell you to react to Dice as it's very popular but I like some others more. The music has a lot of change-ups and everybody gets a chance to shine. Have fun. You've been infected with the Band-Maid bug.

Awkward might be a good song to listen to next. Kanami's (the lead guitarist) sound is like a mix of Santana and The Edge, but she's like Elliott Easton in that she plays short guitar solos that leave people wanting more. You need to either do 'Play!' LIVE, or the 4:18 version of 'Don't You Tell Me' LIVE next. Unless you want to see a Music Video, in which case, do 'Thrill' next or 'Secret Maiko Lips'. And maybe get some headphones. I can't hear the video very well, but I don't think you're getting all the bass you need for MISA and Akane.

The official origin story is a little too pat. The story goes Miku Kobato worked at a maid cafe and thought the contrast between the maid look and the hard rock sound would be interesting. So she found Kanami the guitarist on-line, who in turn knew a drummer (Akane) who knew a bassist (MISA) and they formed a band and later decided they wanted to add another vocalist and found Saiki by auditions. Their concerts are "servings" and the audiences are masters and princesses. In reality, Miku was in an idol group and the maid cafe was staffed by idols from the Platinum Passport brand of the Avex Group. The band may have been her idea but the agency had an idol group Passpo☆ whose gimmick was they were an airline "crew" and audiences were passengers on a flight. So mangement would have been comfortable with the concept. Nevertheless, the group that was formed is extremely talented. You are spot on for mentioning two vocals complimenting each other. When they originally started, Miku Kobato was the vocalist for this group but she soon realized her voice was too light for kind of music she wanted to perform. So she recruited Saiki and picked up a guitar for double duty.

Wait until you get to the non ballad stuff. The girls ROCK harder and better than any guy band in this area. The drummer is the most amazing drummer I’ve seen since I was a kid learning drums. Like a cross between the sheer abandon of Keith Moon, the power of Bonham and the precision of Peart. She is the drummer that finally inspired me to actually put real effort into the double pedals.

I love your reactions! I particularly like how you picked up on the contrast between Saiki and Miku's voices. That is why the harmonies sound so good. More rarely Kanami and Misa will also contribute to backing vocals as well. These are quite possibly the most well rounded and BEST Rock act in the world today. Please do more Band-Maid! :) Small suggestion. It would be really great if you had a direct way to record the audio. Just hearing the music through your mics makes the music very poor quality. Nonetheless great job and keep em coming ;)
