Thank you so much for watching another video in the Real Doctor Reacts series. I saw Dr Mike react to this Good Doctor episode on his channel and thought it would be interesting for me to give a surgeon perspective on this doctor tv show. Recently, I enjoyed doing a Greys Anatomy review video.
This was the first time I had ever seen the Good Doctor so I started off with the very first episode of The Good Doctor Season 1. I was excited as the episode was full of surgery and it was very interesting to see them portray a tumor operation. I do a play by play breakdown of the tumor operation and how tv doctors like Dr. Shaun Murphy handle things in the operating room. This is a perfect video for any premed students out there wondering if a surgeon day in the life is accurately portrayed in the Good Doctor.

I've been watching through a lot of your videos and really enjoying them but seriously, as others have mentioned, please look into the issues with Autism Speaks and what many actual autistic people have to say about them. It makes a big difference in the world when doctors choose not to get information from hateful sources. Aside from that hiccup thank you for the fantastically informative videos that I'm greatly enjoying.

I can't remember his name, but there's a documentary somewhere here on youtube about a guy that can remember basically every single day he has lived. He could tell you the weather 5 years back and what he did that day. Pretty sure he wasn't autistic. Not really the same as Shaun, because this guy could still forget things like where he put his keys, or the tv remote etc. Interesting nontheless.

Quick tip, you need normalize your audio. The intro music you play at the beginning of this video is extremely loud compared to your voice levels. So when I started the video i raised the volume (100% volume on youtube and my speakers) so I could hear you speak. When the intro music started, it blew my speakers out, and if you're on a headset/earbuds you can really blow out people's ears. So you should lower the levels of the music, or raise the volume of your mic (or voice track). Most video editing software has a "normalize" function you can do that will automatically adjust all the volumes on all tracks to be about the same. And we in the audience won't need to constantly adjust volume as we watch it.

THANK YOU! So glad someone pointed this out! So many KZfaq videos are guilty of this. I am a habitual headphones person, so it really hurts when this happens. It is so common that I pretty much keep my finger on the volume button when I start a video - until I know it is safe.... the bad part is - if the volume fluctuates at the beginning, chances are it's going to do it multiple times and throughout the whole video. Sadly - that means that I often skip watching the video, especially one like this that is close to a half an hour in length. I don't want to keep risking my ears getting blown up, and to keep adjusting the volume, it's just a total distraction from the content as well.

I was in the hospital (a large teaching hospital in a major NE city) and I had pneumonia and was admitted. But my lung sounds were “rales” and they had every single intern in the room listening. Even had more stopping throughout the day to ask if they could listen. Just continuously through the day people would continue stopping by. I obliged and they were happy and excited but I knew it wasn’t anything malicious, just trying to hear something they don’t get to usually.

I have a very autistic adult son who in most ways functions at a toddler level. He is a computer savant with a photographic memory. He can look at a web site in English and then translate it to Arabic or Japanese or whatever and remember what the English words are. He can't really answer questions (he won't tell you what it says) but watching him navigate is amazing. I can totally see him being able to visualize things like 0:50 It also means if he sees me type a password once he knows it so parental controls are moot. It makes things interesting sometimes. I've gotten good at reinstalling Windows because he deleted the wrong files!

It's quite concerning that there is no response to all the people pointing out the problem with "autism speaks". Unless I missed it, I went through all the comments and saw zero acknowledgment any of them. Feels like if you were to recommend a source that was outed as being deliberate malicious misinformation or cited a publication that most every other professional in a field says is problematic then just leaving it in the video with no disclaimer. I'm really hoping this is just an oversight that is yet to be remedied with an addition to the description or pinned comment.

Hey Doc, I'm a brain tumor patient with a recurrent Pineal Ependymoma that's been successfully resected twice, irradiated twice, and treated with adjunct chemotherapy. I understand that, although my ependymoma is in my posterior fossa region of my brain, they can also occasionally occur in the spine. Have you ever dealt with the management of a recurrent spinal ependymoma, or any spinal tumor in general, and, if so, what effects are usually expected in the management of a patient with one of those aforementioned tumors?

I wish I could ask all doctors never to say “it’s routine”. As you state, it may be routine for the doctor but it not likely to be for the patient. I think doctors think they are reassuring the patient with their experience, but I find that line to be jarring. Personally, all I want to know is that my loved one is the most important thing on the doctor’s agenda at that moment That’s it. :) Thanks for the video! Informative and interesting. Keep it up :)

Dr. Dan, what's the right way to go about trying to find a really good spine surgeon in my area? I think I really need one, I've tried everything else imaginable for my back pain and it's just not getting better, and I wish I could come to you (I can tell you care about your patients and are a good doctor, which is rare in my experience, sadly, very) but I'm assuming you're probably nowhere near where I live. So, I was just wondering if you had any tips for choosing a skilled surgeon. My main fear about surgery is that it will make the pain worse and/or cause the problem to start moving up the spine (I was told this apparently can happen, not sure if that's correct, but now I'm worried about that.) I've heard ENDLESS horror stories about back surgeries either not working at all or, usually, making things markedly worse. But my uncle had back surgery 30+ years ago and has been nearly pain-free ever since, like, an ideal sucess story. Obviously there are no guarantees with this kind of thing, but I'd like to know how to choose a surgeon to up my chances of an outcome like that, rather than the former.

When it comes to Freddie Highmore's performance as an Autistic, he just comes off as a socially inept Genius/geek just like the characters from The Big Bang Theory. Joon Woo's portrayal of Dr. Park Shi On from Good Doctor and Kento Yamazaki's Dr. Shindo Minato are more authentic.
