Welcome to my first Doctor Reacts video. I've watched Doctor Mike do some amazing medical tv show reviews and saw that it is a great opportunity to do some medical education for all of you. I'm starting off with a Greys Anatomy Review!
I watched Grey's Anatomy as a premed student many years ago to motivate me to study! I haven't watched too many medical tv shows since then and during my premed days, I thought this was the best doctor tv show. In this episode, Meredith Grey starts her first day of surgical residency (meets Derek Shepherd) and I discuss what's real and what's not about what tv doctors say and do. I also do some teaching about common causes of postoperative fever towards the end of the video.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Reacts to GREY'S ANATOMY Medical Drama Review by Surgeon

Please review the HIV episode where Miranda removes HIV strain from the HIV virus and gives it to the "bubble boy" to help build his immune system. Season 10, episodes 22-23. 22 is the episode she gives him the deactivated HIV virus and 23 is the repercussions of her doing that. Also same season episode 18 shows a family that has three children have cardiomyopathy and they appear until episode 23. My questions: can what Miranda did really happen? Regarding the McNell Family, can that also really happen? I'm really interested in seeing your review (please,please,please), I've been watching GA since episode 1 first aired.

I think it depends on the episodes they review-- this one is pretty accurate but some are ridiculous. My guess is since this is the pilot they probably had a doctor on set helping, but as the series went on they probably got less consults.

Episode 6.07 is a major episode on a huge spinal tumor. Good Shepherd is definitely surgery on someone with scoliosis of a severe magnitude, but there is also a lot of storyline about Derek and Amelia's family. If you haven't kept up, Amelia is Derek's who is also a neurosurgeon.

For a lot of shows there can be big differences between the pilot and even the second episode, especially if the pilot was filmed in hopes of getting ordered as a new series. For other shows that get ordered straight to series, there's likely a lot more consistency.

These shows often make it out that the entire hospital is run by doctors with a little help from nameless nurses. It's for the sake of the plot but it is frustrating. I just hope most people watching know that doctors are trained for a very specified job, while techs, nurses and other staff are highly trained for a different specified job and all parts of the care team are equally as vital!

I think it’s interesting how different doctors reacting to Grey’s tend to think about realism in the show; it largely depends, at least in my opinion, what you’re focusing on the most. The show doesn’t get every medical or drug right, but considering people know it’s as much a soap opera as a medical drama, it’s fair to say most people aren’t using it as a medical guide. What they DO seem to get right - which I’m glad to see Doctor Dan take note of - is the culture in the field, the mindset, and why doctors think the way they do. Having grace for those things make sense when we sit down and remember it’s a television show lol.

There’s a surgical theatre above the OR because it’s a teaching hospital right?
@sinandcyanide7505
@sinandcyanide7505 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It's really not uncommon. Most ORs used to have an observation room for students, which is why it used to be called an operating theatre.

@@clc18mac I would imagine that as technology improves including global access to information, the ability to watch a procedure in person isn't worth what it used to be. As mentioned in the video, I imagine there's video of all sorts of procedures.

I remember when I got my IVC filter. It was probably my 2nd most memorable surgical experience. I got to see it before they put it in and they showed me how it opened up and works. It’s pretty neat. It was really bizarre being numb but still feeling the pressure of them poking around in my neck while they were inserting it. It was a little unnerving. Thankfully I just had that one clot and haven’t had any since then. They did keep me on blood thinners for years though which caused some issues from time to time.

I love to see new Dr. Choi videos in my inbox! I start my freshman year of college next fall and truly aspire to become a spine surgeon. Thank you so much....i was thinking it cant be a normal thing to have that observation, unless maybe there is some crazy complicated surgery like maybe separating conjoined twins or something. I think i held onto that belief because in Europe the OR is often referred to as “theater.” Now we know...

I have a huge abdominal hernia that several local surgeons said they couldn’t repair and I was sent to the hernia clinic at UW Hospital in Seattle - a teaching hospital similar to how they show Seattle Grace. A resident roomed me at the out patient hernia clinic. In talking about my history, records, and scans the resident cheerfully assured me that the surgeon I was there to see will ‘definitely be able to help you - he’s the best there is!’ The surgeon came in a bit later with the smiling resident in tow. And stated that after reviewing my CT scans, he felt it was the worst/most complicated hernia he had seen in his 40 years of surgery, and that weighing the risks and benefits, he felt operating would cause more harm. Then he asked if I’d sign a release so they could use my CT scans for teaching and research. The resident was white as snow , eyes huge, and looked like she wanted to die. Made me think of George.

The one thing that bugs me is very rarely do any of the residents ever have an attending in the room. I know in later residency years, some surgeons will be allowed to operate with the attending checking in from time to time or being available by phone if the need arises. Bailey was PGY2 maybe at the beginning of the series and nearly every surgery she did, she did it alone with an intern in the room. I’ve also never once seen a CRNA in the room either. Anesthesiologists where I work are over more than one room and are not in the room all the time but the CRNA is.

What's PGY2? Bailey was a fourth year in the beginning I think. (intern 1, resident 2-5)

I have a question for you. When i was a about 6 is when this started. When i am in a car the smaller the care worse . When i am on any flat road in a care the road starts to look like i am riding down a wall then it starts to look like every thing is upside down like riding on the bottom of the earth. Also the other thing that happens is when i wake up on my back my eyes try to roll back into my head it feels like your on a roller coaster going down the 1st big drop but not in my gut i get that in my head for about 5-7 seconds. I fight it when it happens. Also when i am just walking or standing i get the droping feeling in my head but my eye don't try to roll back. Sorry for the grammar. I would like it if you could give me any info at all opinion will work as well. I tried to go to doctors but they say it sounds like its a mental. Also i got Obama care just to try and get someone to help me but that did not work.
