Traumas, traumas, traumas! Season 5 Episode 1 and 2 - Dream a Little Dream of Me is absolutely full of them and this is the stuff that surgeons live for.
Grey's Anatomy is definitely a crowd favorite and has been requested multiple times in the comments. I get it - I watched Grey's Anatomy as a premed student many years ago to motivate me to study! I haven't watched too many medical tv shows since then and during my premed days, I thought this was the best doctor tv show. In this episode, Doctors Meredith Grey, Christina Yang, Izzie Stevens, Miranda Bailey, and Derek Shepherd get slammed in the emergency department trying to handle multiple trauma patients after a terrible car accident. We've also have some solid medical education in this video: I review the essentials of the initial trauma workup, why a tracheostomy is done, spinal cord injuries, what can go wrong in the operating room, and various aspects of surgical residency depicted in this episode.

Please review the HIV episode where Miranda removes HIV strain from the HIV virus and gives it to the "bubble boy" to help build his immune system. Season 10, episodes 22-23. 22 is the episode she gives him the deactivated HIV virus and 23 is the repercussions of her doing that. Also same season episode 18 shows a family that has three children have cardiomyopathy and they appear until episode 23. My questions: can what Miranda did really happen? Regarding the McNell Family, can that also really happen? I'm really interested in seeing your review (please,please,please), I've been watching GA since episode 1 first aired.

I heard that Grey's Anatomy actually gets inspiration based on real life medical events. So a lot of the cases, though they may seem extreme, actually have happened at least once, or are completely possible of occurring.

Great vid!! There’s an episode in season 6 called “I Saw What I Saw” which is basically a whodunit about a patient getting passed around a bunch of doctors in a mass trauma situation who ultimately dies and Richard tries to piece together what happened. Very medically focused, little romance drama

One thing that always irks me about Greys is that instead of a spinal surgeon, an orthopedic and neurosurgeon operate on spines. Surely this doesn't happen, especially an ortho surgeon?

SO I'm actually an orthopaedic surgeon who subspecialized in spine surgery by doing a fellowship. Neurosurgeons also operate on the spine during their residencies and sometimes they also choose to do fellowships as well. So Grey's is actually correct! But usually an orthopaedic surgeon who operates on shoulders or knees doesn't typically do spine surgery.

Do surgical interns and residents in real life actually participate in as much of the procedures as they show in Grey's Anatomy? Lol sounds like a ridiculous question to ask Dr. Dan, but they always show Torres and Bailey (the residents) doing procedures in the O.R. by themselves lol... I feel like no one really ever points that out as a big inaccuracy, and it's basically just accepted as the norm on these shows. They never show the hospital Ortho attending with Torres, even for a consult, it's just Torres by herself as a resident lol.... Yang is doing tons of cardiothoracic procedures as an intern lol. Burke and Hahn are there as the attendings for that, but wouldn't there be a Cardiothoracic Resident over Yang?

You're totally right! Every resident always has an appropriate specialty attending overseeing them. The amount of independence a resident has depends on how senior the resident is and other factors such as which hospital the resident is working at. Some programs allow more autonomy for residents than others.

I have watched Dr. Mike for awhile, but am enjoying your channel so much! As someone who spends a lot of time as a patient in hospitals due to a stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis, I understand more of the terminology, and pick up on stuff more than I ever used to. I didn't like medical dramas UNTIL I became a professional patient! You'd think I would get sick of medical stuff. I wouldn't compare yourself. Although, Dr. Mike does of Bear...do you have a gentle giant fluffy floof? Even Dr. Mike knows people watch his channel just to see Bear. My only request would be to cover more episodes from The Good Doctor! It is my favorite current medical drama. It's no House M.D. though.

I think the reason they don't have eye protection is so that the audience can read the characters' expressions easier.

It's nice seeing a surgeon's perspective on the surgical aspects of this show. I can't speak for how accurate the surgeries are when my kid asks as I don't work in the OR. But, as a nurse, me and Grey's Anatomy definitely have a love hate relationship. I know every hospital is different but before I was a nurse, I was and EMT-I and have been to the level 1 trauma centers and I have never seen a whole gaggle of surgeons hanging out in the ED taking care of patients. Then they act like ED docs and nurses (all the other docs and nurses too) know nothing (if they show them at all). I could write a paper on the things Grey's get wrong. Still love (and hate) this show lol.

He can actually walk now because Callie froze him as far down as she could without his heart stopping. When he got out of surgery he was paralyzed. The idea was Hunts and Callie decided to give it a try. Derek was against it from the start until he saw it worked.

Can you make a video quickly explaining some common medical terms on the show? Like some of the medications, words like proximal, bilateral, acidosis, sinus, v-tach, bradycardia, tachycardia, whipple, some of the illnesses, what a running whip stitch is, some common anatomy words (like WHAT is a vena cava???) and any other buzzy medical words you notice them using a lot?

When I was in a car accident, I busted my face against the dashboard before the airbag deployed. One of my fingers was cut up and swollen and so was my knee. They only xrayed my hand and made me walk to the room. I'm lucky I was okay

In regards to the pen tracheostomy, i was actually trained through remote emergency training on how to do those. They USED to be trained where you would take a BIC or other cheap pen you could remove the back and front from and just stab down, now they teach how to use a razor to do a small cut into the airway and then insert and tape the tube into place. Yes, it isn't ideal, but if the other option is they suffocate due to whatever is causing the block, i would rather risk the possible infection risk and not ideal but still workable tube.

Please do not ever compare yourself to other doctor. You guys are great on your own way. Some of your fellow doctor are ace on making fun and roast the drama, while you in other hand are open minded and great at actually understand and explain about the drama. In many other reaction video, I feel like a fool for liking the "total super unrealistic never gonna happen" scene. Here you explain that yes some of them are unrealistic, but some are happen in real life even tho its rare. Keep the great work doc. You are the best.^^

The whole icicle thing was ridiculous to me. Not that it happened, but ... how long was that in there? By the time they got to x-ray, would her body temperature not have melted the part that was inside her? And therefore, would it not have been better to pull it immediately, because the longer it stayed, the more dirty melt water would be in her abdomen?

You are far better than Dr. Mike. He is so arrogant and cocky. Is he even a surgeon? You have a much better teaching approach and a better manor. I just had a double neck fusion surgery and would look to you for guidance for sure! Go Dr. Dan!!
