the way the informal spanish d gets lost in speech reminds me of how things work with english t. english t is one of english's most varying consonants from accent to accent, so cheers to similarities!

Informally speaking we tend to lose the sound of letters like D at the end of the passive and the present perfect such as cansado=cansao (tired), hablado=hablao (spoken). Also at the begining of words such as Dónde=ónde (where). Adjetives: demasiado=demasiao (too much). Is a general rule to sound more efficient but less formal.

Yes!! This definitely happens!! The letter "s", often disappears too. 😊

In Mexico or South America outside Venezuelans and Colombian, people don't drop the D. That's mostly a Caribbean thing.

I don't drop the "D" when speaking. I guess it depends where someone is from in Colombia or Venezuela.

Una de las cosas que me ha ayudado a pronunciar mejor el español es saber que el español se pronuncia en la parte frontal de la boca mientras que el inglés se habla en la parte posterior de la boca. Las letras españolas T y D son ejemplos principales de esto. One of the things that has helped me to pronounce Spanish better is knowing that Spanish is spoken in the front of the mouth while English is spoken in the back of the mouth. The Spanish letters T and D are prime examples of this.
@davidtice49724 жыл бұрын
Spanish D and T are pronounced with the tongue right behind the front teeth while English D and T are pronounced with the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. Along with rolling the Spanish letter R the correct pronunciation of the letters D and T will greatly improve your Spanish pronunciation.

💯 % agree that’s very clear when you say in Spanish the cluster “tr” and “dr” in Spanish the tongue touches completely behind the teeth and in English it’s similar to “ch” and “dz” sound , compare these words: Transport > transportes Train > Tren Dream/Drill > Ladrido Drag > Drácula Draft > Drama

It's interesting hearing you pronounce the letter T in Spanish. A lot of people pronounce by placing the tip of the tongue on the alveolar ridge (against against the upper teeth). I pronounce my T's by placing the tip of my tongue in between my teeth, biting down, and then releasing it while making the T sound. Have you heard of anyone else doing something like what I do?

The main difference between the english and the spanish "t" os that we ( spanish speakers) put the tipof the tongue behind the teeth and you ( english speakers) put It behind the alveolos, over the teeth.

Exactamente! Learning the correct pronunciation of the Spanish letters T and D is very important to improve your Spanish speaking accent. Tal vez lo mas importante despues de learning how to roll your letters R and rr.

This is not completely wrong, but it is. The second "d" of "donde" is pronounced softer because is next to a "n". Not because second d always must be pronounced softers. Good examples are "dedo", both are strong "d" sounds, and "donde", "andes", "pandemia", where those "d" are prononunced slightly softer.

I like your videos and it's nice you teach your Dominican Spanish so foreign people can understand it if they go to R.D. but in my humble opinion I considerer you should emphasize the correct/proper way. I do not know why some countries are losing the correct Spanish for example 'l' instead 'r' or just how you said it cutting letters such as como etâ? (cômo estâs?) salu (salud) etc. I think that one of the most beautiful things about our language is the "r' sound and also that we must pronounce every single letter of the words unless we're talking about 'h' which is silent. I'm from Mexico btw.

#vivalatinoamerica 😎

Is there a difference?
6 жыл бұрын
Yes. The d is more like a regular d sound in English but slightly softer, but the t is a little more harsh.
@Wayspears5 жыл бұрын
so the d is a th even with the air flow through your teeth?
5 жыл бұрын
kind of yes. but more like the "th" in the word "the" not like the word "with"
@carlosd40275 жыл бұрын
We have two different "d" sounds. A hard one in the beginning of a word or after "l", "r" "n" un which you complete la close the air flow and a softer one , for example, between vowels. First "d" of "donde" sounds different than the second one which is softer and the air flow os not completo closed. Pronouncing both identically won't make the message confusing but you'll sound like a machine.

The pronunciation of d is driving me crazy....if I pronounce it all the time like how you did in "donde", is that correct? there's no tricky rule to remember or anything like that?
6 жыл бұрын
You will learn when to make it disappear and when not to as you learn Spanish. For now, just pronounce it softly so that you don't make an error.
@ThePassingVoid6 жыл бұрын
If there is a vowel (a, e, u, i, o, y), r or another soft d in front of the d, I pronounce it soft, otherwise I pronounce it hard.
@carlosd40275 жыл бұрын
First "d" of "donde" , which is oclusive, sounds harder than the second one which is aproximant. If you pronounces the second like the oclusive first one you will sound like a robot.

You are teaching a very specific and local variation of Spanish pronunciation, spoken mostly in Dominican Republic, in standard Spanish the d and t consonants are always pronounced most of the time, for example in Spain (and other Spanish speaking countries) the way you talk n your video (“de ‘onde eres) would be totally incorrect and considered a wrong use of the language
