Man, the artwork on these last few pinball machines you've fixed has hit it out of the park! There's a big difference between the backglass art of the early 1980s and the pre-1980s era machines. They're more willing to use special paint and air brush effects in the later art. It makes a HUGE difference!

It's been a while since a Firepower was done. Looking forward to see this through. As usual, you just seem to do the exact video that I want to see :). Your troubleshooting is still as great as ever. On the cap testing. It's not uncommon for bigger electrolytics to show 20% off on meters due to the way the meters work. The digital meters workwith a formula based on time to charge and because Electro's tend to leak a little, even when 100% good, the bigger ones do read a bit higher.

I've often wondered the same, especially at a place called "Funspot" @ Weirs Beach in New Hampshire. The largest arcade in the US (maybe even the world). Place is absolute heaven. Next time I go I'll have to take a look at the service drop from the street or ask the manager for a tour of the electrical room.

We actually don't have too impressive of a system, but we upgraded a bit when we moved in. The front left wall has it's own 20amp circuit, the front right wall has it's own, and the back has 3 circuits on one side and one on the other. So we have everything plugged into 6 circuits, but we usually don't have everything on either. The most we ever have up and running at once is about 50 games.... Some of them though only draw an amp or so, the pinball machines draw 3 amps or so usually. There was a big thread on pinside awhile back where the pinball hall of fame was doing pictures and stuff of the build of the new building, and they showed the huge power setup they need to run all those machines. Pretty wild!

Another fantastic video! These are so entertaining and informative to watch; thank you for the great content, Ronnie! I am trying to learn to revive a (slightly later, as it is a System 9, but not too far off) Sorcerer pinball that I had shipped to me, and that was unfortunately involved in a crash and was destroyed! I can get the game to boot up from time to time, even play games for a couple of hours occasionally, but then it'll die w/ an error 1, 5, or 7. I've tried a bunch of stuff, and am kind of stuck now, so I'm hoping to get some more ideas (or hell, even direct input if anyone has any would be greatly appreciated!) from these videos, as I have in the past! If you ever do a System 9 repair for a game that keeps locking up, now *that* will be a video not to miss! Can't wait for the follow-up video for this Firepower in the meantime :)

There's several things it could be, ripple or bad connections on the power supply or the power supply connection on the MPU, bad sockets on the MPU, or a bad 'interconnect' board between the MPU and the Driver board, that would be what I would look at first. I've also seen bad roms that after they heat up they start being problematic.
@erikface01
@erikface01 Жыл бұрын
@@LyonsArcade thank you for the reply! Same person here, just a diff channel (am on my phone now) :) Among the things I’ve tried are: -recapping the power supply and MPU -re-pinning (M and F) several connectors, including the ones that deliver/receive power (though they’ve always tested out w/ good voltages, as far as I can tell) -replaced U18 w/ 6116 NVRAM -tested voltages at several of the other chips and they seem good, too -believe I’ve check the transistors and those have seemed consistent, as well -replaced fuses, though they haven’t blown since I fixed a stuck pop bumper switch when I first got the destroyed game in I’ve wondered if there might be issues with other ROMs, but I’m not sure how to test them beyond voltage expectations. I bought a logic probe, but am not sure how to use it to test those or if it’d be helpful here :/ I’d really prefer to find and fix the problem(s) on these original boards, rather than shelling out $500 to try a new MPU when I don’t even know if it’d work! I’m wondering if it comes down to various chips that might need replacing, and there are definitely a couple that get insanely hot to the touch pretty quickly, I just don’t know how to test them and I haven’t got a means of burning ROMs. Maybe a good next step (ideally after testing, rather than shotgunning?) is trying to hunt down replacement chips for all the sockets and see if it helps?

Actually, it is possible for old capacitors to pretend to be higher than they are. They could be failing as they could be charging slower. So you can't always go by that. If they are leaky, it increases the charge time and can produce higher than normal values on the meter. There isn't really a single piece of test equipment to fully vet capacitors. And if you watch the Mr. Carlson's Lab channel, one can learn that other capacitors besides electrolytics are polarized, and those are often mismarked if marked at all. A lot of capacitors have internal shielding and you'd want the side connected to the shielding to be the lowest impedance side. So if you feed a tube or a transistor, you'd want the shielded side to be closest to the previous stage. That way, you are less likely to amplify interference. He teaches how to test that with a scope or make a device to test that. As for the current machine, yeah, I imagine more connectors are involved.
@sguttag
@sguttag Жыл бұрын
Ron, watch out on your new capacitor tester. Really, to measure a capacitor, you need to know not just what it claims as its capacitance but also what the ESR (equivalent series resistance) and/also its parallel resistance. Capacitor meters essentially use timing to determine capacitance (how fast does it charge). However if you have ESR or parallel resistance, it will cause your meter to read as higher capacitance. So, when you find that a capacitor measures on the high side, and it is an older capacitor, you can predict that it has ESR or EPR causing the meter to read high...since that is a failure mode (the capacitor turning into a resistor), they should be changed.

@davidhollfelder9940
@davidhollfelder9940 Жыл бұрын
The yellow paper caps are junk (far past there exp. date). Replace those too. On the electrolytics, when the ESR goes high, you get a false high capacitance value. We used “punch down” blocks extensively at the telephone company. However, of all brands (many have come and gone), only the legendary Siemens (originally made by Western Electric) “66” blocks were truly reliable. PS. The at&t 110 blocks are a close second, but are easily damaged if using the wrong punch down tool.

JOE CLASSIC, What is the name of the circuit that is generating the pulses 18Vdc to 6vdc for the lamps? because when the MPU board has a problem with the code it will output 18vdc steady ( not pulsing ) so it will damage all the lamps because 18vdc is applied to the lamps which causes them to get damaged. I'm just confused about when the MPU board has a coding problem or other type of problems that is will stop generating the pulses of the 18vdc for the lamps which will damage the lamps. This sounds like a major design flaw and bug which they left in. Another Question#2 is does the GOLD contacts for connectors prevent battery acid damage and prevent battery corrosion because they are GOLD contacts? because those Molex connectors use that silver plated pins so I'm thinking since they aren't GOLD plated that they will get battery acid damaged and battery corrosion issues because they are silver plated pins and not gold plated pins for the molex connectors?

Just one question, I´ve seen flashing lamps on logo "Williams" and now I see it on the planets, I need to do some work at mine but I never find any circuit that make those light flash, so, those lamps are blinking because of a circuit or they are just simply blinking bulbs?
