The person removing the axle nut ruined the nut because he didn't realize that the left side axle nut is a lefthanded or reverse thread. Hope too many people didn't ruin their axles or bearing nuts following this video

I see the spring pack on that truck looks like it has been beefed up. Is it stock or aftermarket? If aftermarket, what springs did you buy? How do you like their ride and performance? I need to do something for my F350. It’s leaning a little on one side. Think I have a fatigued leaf spring.

Getting ready to replace my hub seal. What is the right procedure to tighten the hub nut. I’ve read a few. But some old school mechanics said it would back off if I do it like procedure says

Tighten until you feel a little drag when you spin the hub. Not too much, but SOME drag. It's "feel" thing. You either got it or you don't.

I believe it's a specialty socket. The one I have is marked "W83008". I used mine on a Dana axle on 2000 e350. Gonna use on 2008. Should be universal for Ford.

I have a 2005 excursion with 21k miles but my driver side rear hub wobbles and tire appears wobbly too. Wasn't so bad when I spun it without the wheel on. Going to rotate and use the spare just to make sure. Why was extreme pressure axle grease not used?
@_Richard_Cranium
@_Richard_Cranium 10 ай бұрын
If you mean axle grease to pack the bearings, I believe the bearings are being lubricated with the axle housing oil. Greased bearings would impede oil flow to the bearings. They should, however, be pre-lubricated with gear oil or maybe some assembly lube, (I couldn't imagine installing a dry bearing.) Even so, when he tops off the differential housing, oil should flow to the bearings. If you meant something else then never mind, I have no Idea.

So it looks like the work with The carbide drill was unnecessary seeing how the mechanic was trying to left hand loosen the axle not when to take the night off you would righty tighty... -those rear ends on passenger side is the normal way and hence-driver-side would be opposite. correct?

The nut is the simplest thing in this job, no need ever to cut it out not ever, it is called a ratcheting axle spindle nut, it has a spring in between the keyed cup washer and nut, and the special nut spanner socket ,and how it works is the simplest thing on planet earth, you put it in the axle housing and line up the dogs push in on the ratchet springs and turn the nut either off or back on the rear end housing spindle, you are never going to get past the cutting the nut off with a grinder cutter, stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. By the way I tried the chisel thing at first, then looked up on line fir the correct tool to use, that’s when I found the spanner socket with four dogs that I called it, I can’t be leave they are torque to 60 pounds, the back off 5 clicks on new and 7 clicks on old, really. That what I did not do , I tighten til it stoped then I backed it off 3/4 of a turn , I hope I have not ruined my new bearings driving it like this, now I’m going to tight them up to 60 foot pounds and back them off 5 clicks, I hope ford knows what they are doing. Thanks big Al California.

It's an oil bath bearing. It gets it's lubrication from the axle (rear end oil). He definitely should have put oil in the cavity between the inner and outer bearing to give it lubrication until the oil from the axle finds it's way to the bearings. If you don't do that and hit the road on a long flat surface where the oil don't run side to side to oil the new bearings, you will burn them to a crisp. Decent video but laced with misguidance for people that are not mechanically inclined. After watching this, I would have second thoughts about having this gentleman do the repair. Jmho

Why do folks insist on calling bearing cups races? A race is the ring that's pressed on or held on to the axle with a set screw to hold a bearing to an axle. These are BEARING CUPS!

Axle nuts are 1 time use only and as you know requires special socket. If you like to revisit the job keep using old nuts. I think certain models had left handed thread and right handed threads.

I thought the rear axle torque was 55lbs and not 60? Also if you dont torque the wheel nuts to 140, you run the risk the chance of over torque and then the studs start breaking. Anyway good job, big man ! Thanks for sharing.
